''What are you?'' asked the hoodlum, ''I'm Batman'', came the chilling reply. With this line, Keaton introduced the real Batman to the movie audience. Taking its cue from the dark tone of the 80's Batman comics and graphic novels, the first Batman film introduced us to a Batman never seen before on small or big screen. Or unlike any fantasy/ adventure hero, for that matter. Following the opposite direction of Adam West's Camp Crusader, Keaton's Batman was a dark and psychologically disturbed vigilante, more similar to Charles Bronson's character in ''Death Wish'' than Christopher Reeve's ''Superman''. However, as the ''series'' went on, the Batman became less dark and more sexy and flashy (and campy, in Clooney's case), as more handsome actors took the role.
