Golden Globe in 2000 for best actor in a comedy for his performance in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" |
Clooney's part in the awful camp that was ''Batman & Robin'' was certainly a lowpoint in a career that sports several highlights. Apart from being a very handsome man, George Clooney is a good actor indeed - just not Batman. On NBC's blockbuster drama "ER," George Clooney played a capricious kind of guy. His character, Dr. Doug Ross, was a fighter and a philanderer. He sparred with the hospital administration and jilted women. But he had a softer side, too: a fierce loyalty to his friend Dr. Greene and heart that melted for children. Not to mention his puppy-dog brown eyes. |
||
Oddly, the man beneath the scrubs isn't so different. Clooney spent the first half of his life chipping away at a career until his perseverance and stubborn flair won him big time showbiz success. His finished product came only at the expense of a failed marriage, a war against the paparazzi and a year spent sleeping in his cousin's closet. Growing up in rural Kentucky under the shadow of his newscaster and local celebrity father, Clooney learned at a young age that having famous connections doesn't make one famous. After a mediocre college career, every brand of odd job and a failed audition for the Cincinnati Reds, he made some money harvesting tobacco, then headed out West to audition for the movies. He ended up in TV. Many failed pilots and bit parts in sitcoms (from "The Facts of Life" to "Roseanne" to "Sisters") later, Clooney stumbled into "ER." Millions of dollars later, Clooney again attempted to make it on the big screen. |

Although Clooney won title roles in first-run films like "From Dusk Till Dawn" (which received lukewarm reviews) and "Batman and Robin" (an awful movie by all accounts), none of his characters launched him into the realm of the Tom Cruises and Harrison Fords. Of the Batman fiasco, Clooney told a Virginian-Pilot reporter, "I guess I ended that franchise." |
||
Nonetheless, the man with the swarthy smile decided to leave "ER" when his contract expired in 1999 to focus on his film career. Even if Clooney doesn't make it from TV to the Oscars, he'll still have his loyalty and the tight-knit group of friends he has kept since he moved to L.A. Clooney explained to Parade magazine that he puts all of his faith in his pals: "The only virtue is loyalty. ... If you're going to err, it has to be on the side of your friends." He has a 150-pound pig named Max as a pet. |
