Video Marketplace tips for a better commercial production
Television is the most powerful advertising media and the commercials you air
will impact the image consumers of your company. The higher the quality of the
commercials you make, the more effectively cable TV can be used to grow your
business. Contact our experienced cable-TV Advertising
Account Executives to prepare for producing your cable-TV commercial.
Benefits of planning the production
The benefits derived from cable-TV advertising are many. The images viewers
see will be remembered for a long time, perhaps even longer than the product,
service or particular sale being advertised will be available. Essentially, the
images viewers see (the commercial itself) form the image they will have of your
company. Because of that, we offer the following tips to help make the actual
production of your commercial go smoothly, in turn creating a better finished
product.
______________CHECKLIST______________
A quality 30sec commercial that sells
Developing an effective script and storyboard
for a commercial that sells.
- Decide on the type of commercial: Image, Hard Sell, Special Sale, Grand
Opening, or New Location.
- Identify what sets your business apart from your competition.
- Emphasize your MAIN SELLING POINT - your single strongest, most
provocative idea.
- KEEP IT SIMPLE!! Use only one or two ideas/benefits. Avoid cramming your
commercial with too many scenes, too much action or too many effects.
- Avoid wasting words. Television is primarily a visual medium.
- Clearly identify your product or service and plant the brand name in the
viewer's mind.
- Grab your consumers' attention.
- Let the viewer know "what’s in it for them".
- Include a "Call to Action". "Three-Day
Sale" "Just Reduced"
"Last Day" "Call
Now"
- Include a slogan and easily identifiable address or location
description.
- Clarify any co-op requirements.
- Plan ahead for the future . . . consider making the commercial so you
can use it again with only minor revisions. Your library of commercials
will be a good investment for your company.
Preparing for a successful commercial shoot.
(What to do before the camera and crew arrive.)
- Approve the script and storyboard carefully. (Changes cause extra
editing costs.)
- Have camera-ready logos (not stationery or business-card logos) and
pictures ready. Only use photos in top condition for a clean, sharp
commercial.
- Plan ahead for special effects, graphics and CG (character generation).
- Plan the best time for the shoot: During best (low traffic) store time,
when the sun is at the correct angle for the camera, and when you have
time to make decisions. (Shooting time will be approximately two hours,
possibly up to four hours.)
- Have an owner or manager present to assist the producer during the shoot
to make on- the-spot decisions when necessary, and to ensure quality
footage is obtained.
- Plan for the weather if shooting outdoors. Check weather reports on The
Weather Channel for one, two and three days before the shoot. Make an
alternative plan.
- Make certain talent is scheduled and knows what is required. Reconfirm.
Rehearse speaking lines thoroughly prior to the shoot.
- Plan your wardrobe for the camera. Solid colors in pale shades work
best. The camera especially does not like bright colors, black, white, or
saturated red. Avoid tweed, herringbone, small checks, stripes, and other
small patterns, unless they are very subtle.
- Clean and organize the store and/or the business area. Clean storefront
doors and windows if to be used.
- Have display area all set up. Include any props called for in the
script. (Clear the area of items the camera may pick up.)
- Follow the "aspect ratio" of the display, that is, make it
square like a TV screen.
- Map out all electrical outlets and make certain they can be reached
easily.
- A pre-production visit to check the lighting may be necessary for inside
shoots.
- Schedule a date and time for an editing session, and an approximate
completion date.
- A 24-hour notice is required if the shoot date has to be postponed.
