Layer 13; Ego:
A repeat of the last few seconds from Layer 12. Lain commands the
devices from the wall to pound against Eiri until he is covered. One
last device hits against his arm, squishing it against the mess.
Arisu panics, pulls away from Lain and strikes her, cutting her cheek
and causing a small amount of blood to drip down. Lain becomes sad and
tells Arisu that she only did what she thought was best, because she
loved her. Arisu is quiet and they hug.
Lain makes her decision. All reset.
A new morning. At the Iwakura residence, a voice says she is full and
pulls away from the table, leaving only Yasuo and Miho sitting at the
table. Yasuo looks over at an empty place beside him and almost asks
Miho about something, but stops midsentence.
The wires overhead still hum. The train rocks back and forth but there
is no one standing at the door.
Arisu walks through the gates to school. She is joined by Reika and
Juri who want to go to Cyberia that night. She agrees, then says she
will notify her with her NAVI, then stops. But the other girls do not
know who she is talking about until they spot Chisa walking by and
assume it is her. But they do not want to invite Chisa as she was a wet
blanket the last time she came. Arisu dismisses it but cannot help
thinking she was thinking of someone else.
Myu-Myu races across the road with Masayuki behind her. Taro takes out
his portable NAVI and opens it to read a message. A young man walks
across the road with his sister notices Taro's NAVI and comments how
cool it is. Lain flashes on Taro's monitor of a brief second but he
does not know who that is.
Another man passes by Taro as he joins the group - Masami Eiri. He
mutters he will quit today, he will quit, he will quit over and over.
As he walks by, there are two men repairing the electric cables. He
continues walking on.
In a desolate street in the WIRED, Lain is alone. Alternate-Lain comes
up and tries to comfort her - by saying what she did, now no one will
die because of her. Lain is emotional because she is the only one left
and tell alternate-Lain it was her decision to reset everyone's
memory. She does not exist anymore because she does not exist in
anyone's memory. Alternate-Lain reminds her the WIRED is just a place
to exchange information.
Alternate-Lain continues to tease Lain and says she was never human.
Lain's purpose is just to watch and she is a Goddess. She refuses to
believe that but alternate-Lain suggests that life would be easier is
she accepted it. Lain pushes alternate-Lain out of her conscious for
good. But before she fades away, alternate Lain asks what Lain is. Lain
collapses to her knees and sobs.
Lain is alone.
Blackness.
A voice calls out and Lain is bathed in light. She looks up and Yasuo
is looking down at her.
Together, they sit at a table, having tea. Yasuo comments she does not
have to wear her bear pjs but Lain wants to. Lain begins to ask but is
cut off by Yasuo, saying that she loves everyone, then just smiles.
Lain bursts out in tears that someone understands she exists. Yasuo
says next time, they will have madeleines, yes, they're great.
A young woman walks with her fiance in the city, shopping. Arisu
teases him she gets to choose the curtains. She looks up and sees a
small figure standing on a walkway. Excusing herself, she runs up to
the little girl, Lain, and asks if she knows her from somewhere -
perhaps she was in her class that she taught while as a
student-teacher. But Lain denies it. Arisu tells her name and asks for
Lain's name, which she gives. Arisu tells her she is pleased to make
her acquaintance, then is joined by her fiance. She leaves, saying they
may meet again.
Lain watches them go from the bridge. She smiles.
