I can still
remember the day when I walked into my local
shop, way back in the mid-eighties and sitting
proudly on the shelf was a brand new copy of
Purple Rain. I bought the film took it straight
home and watched the film at least three times on
that very same day.
Since that
day I have bought every Prince album and single
that has been released, seen him perform live on
three occasions. My favourite album is the Gold
Experience. Favourite single is to difficult to
select as there are so many great tracks to
choose from.
If you are a
fan of Prince you are bound to know the plot, If
not:
Prince plays
a troubled musician with a bad home life, with
some of his band members wanting to go in
different musical directions, intense rivalry
between himself and Morris Day, and finally his
girlfriend joining a rival band which has been
created by Morris Day, things are not looking to
good for the kid. Things take another turn for
the worse when his father tries to take his own
life, bringing everything to the boil. Could
tonight be his last gig at the club ?
At the end of
the day this is a Prince film but you have to
mention Morris Day who is superb along with his
sidekick Jerome Benton, Apollonia is also great
as the kids girlfriend. Everything about this
film works.
Even though
this film is well over fifteen years old,
Prince`s music has a timeless quality that cannot
be ignored.
This is a
classic movie.
Under
The Cherry Moon
After
watching the above film so many times, along
comes Prince`s follow up movie Under The
Cherry Moon,
Having already bought the soundtrack Parade I purchased
the film on the day of it`s Video release,
however this time the attraction to the film
itself was not as great as when I had first
watched Purple
Rain.
But with a
few viewings over the years I warmed greatly to
this film and still look back fondly at the film
itself and its great soundtrack.
His Purple
Rain took the movie and music worlds by
storm. And now Prince stars - and makes his
directorial debut - in his daring, exuberant
second film Under the Cherry Moon. Prince
plays Christopher Tracy, an American musician
living on the French Riviera and on the bank
accounts of bored divorcees'. Prince is aided and
abetted by his irrepressible sidekick Tricky,
played by the brilliant Jerome Benton.The money
is good but not good enough. So Christopher sets
out to woo and marry a lovely young heiress
(Kristin Scott Thomas). But he didn't count on
confronting her enraged father (Steven Berkoff).
And he didn't count on falling in love.
Graffiti
Bridge
Then along
came Graffiti Bridge, the sequel to the
classic Purple Rain, this is nowhere
near a classic in my humble opinion, maybe I am
missing the point of this film or maybe you have
to be on some higher level to enjoy this piece of
film making, As I have said already I own every
Prince album / Video / DVD available right up to
his last album The Rainbow Children, but
this for me is the worse thing Prince has ever
done, the album is O.K. but as a film it stinks.
As for the
story if that is what you can call it:
The Purple
Rain superstars are fighting over the ownership
of the Glam Slam night-club. And whoever`s
fantasy funk fills the dance floor will reign
supreme.
