The present year is 2052. The entire world has divided into sovereign empires, based on geographical power. AngelFire takes place in what used to be the American Southwest.
Political / World Affairs Timeline - reported by Chris Wick
Angels - The Hosts of Heaven are commonly referred to as angels. Among these ranks, there are three major divisions - Warrior Angel, Avenging Angel, and Guardian Angel. Each classification of angel has specific duties in the eternal war between light and shadow.
Demons - The forces of Shadow in all of their various forms are known as demons. While varied in physical shape, intellegence, and power, demons have a constant aversion to Light in all its incarnations. The Lords of Shadow, Greater Demons, Lesser Demons, and Imps compose the majority of demonic classification. Demons keep themselves separate from humanity to preserve their power in this plane of existence.
* It is supposed that all demons originated on this world. Rumors abound of Alien Demons infiltrating this plane from other places and dimensions - even going so far as to wage war upon the demons of this world.
The War In Heaven - Long ago, before the earth was created, there was a division in Heaven. The forces of creation (or Light) cast out the forces of destruction (Shadow or Darkness). Their war rages on still, on the creation called Earth. The proving ground for this war is Mankind. They are to choose whether to follow light or dark, good or evil, creation or destruction.
The Confederated North American Treaty of 2047 combined all three major powers (The United States, Canada, and Mexico) under one central governing body. Each country still has its own government, but each is subject to the decisions of THE HIGH MAGISTRATE JUDGES.
The Waste War - starting in the year 2040, the US Federal Government contracted private corporations to dispose of hazardous waste. The corporations bought up massive tracts of land in the American Southwest to dispose of the waste. Unknown to the government, these corporations shipped the waste into Mexico.
When the Mexican government found out about the toxic poisons being dumped in their country, they protested. The US government claimed that it knew nothing about it. The Mexican military was sent up to the border to prevent any more dumping.\par US troops were called down to the border, also. Through events that still remain a mystery, they troops engaged in a brief, but vicious and destructive war. Many of the great cities of the Southwest were destroyed.
Canada stepped in and negotiated a truce. Shortly thereafter, the Tri-Union of North American States was formed, with High Magistrate Judges sitting over all three nations.
The Dead Zone - A large section of the American Southwest, extending from El Paso, Texas, into Southern California (going all the way across New Mexico and Arizona), that was sectioned off for hazardous waste dumping. All three nations ship their waste there. One by one, the cities in The Dead Zone emptied. Only a few inhabitants dare live in the poisoned region.
Lowtown - the area of destroyed El Paso run by criminals and underworld-types. It has its own laws and customs. Because such a large percentage of the city falls under this rule, the police don't even go in there anymore. It is said that you can find anything in Lowtown, if you've got the money. And ... if you survive with the money long enough to find it.
Even though the large number of criminals run the streets, an order, The Law of the Street, keeps everyone in line. Fights are settled far more quickly than the courts could possibly handle.
Hightown - the other side of El Paso. The law-abiding community. They have an airport and a train station. They still run several TV and Radio stations. Life goes on in Hightown. They barricade themselves in at night. Despite the protection of police and guards, a strict curfew stays in effect from dusk to 8am. Life adjusts to those time constraints.
DarkTown (aka The Darklands) - The section of Lowtown where humans don't go. The section run by demons and monsters. They've built many temples that house portals to other dimensions in this part of town. More demons are coming through all the time. The largest temple is the one dedicated to YOG, a bizarre alien god.
