Rabbi Charles Freundlich likes books—a lot.

And he wants to make sure his congregants at Temple Anshei Shalom in Delray Beach can find the books they want at the synagogue’s Judaic library.

That is why Freundlich has been actively asking people to donate books from their homes.

“We have an excellent collection of the standard woks in America including the Encyclopedia Judaica and six copies of the Shottenstein Talmud,” said Freundlich, adding that the synagogue established its library about 12-15 years ago with about 200 books, but never tried to develop it.

But that is changing as the synagogue’s library committee is actively working to expand the Judaic collection.

“The late Rabbi William Sajowitz donated books from his library and a few months ago, 306 audio tapes of Jewish music were donated to us,” said Tobias Rothenberg, a retired rabbi who is chairman of the library committee. “These are not just music tapes but many are of world-famous cantors. The tapes also include Klezmer and Isrraeli music, concerts, Chassidic gems and much more. There is also a film strip library on all Jewish subjects.”

The library, which is open from 9:30am to 11am, Monday through Thursday, ahs books written in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish. It also subscribes to 22 Jewish magazines. In addition, there is a children's section available to the children in the religious school. There are also videotapes that cover a variety of subjects from Yiddish movies to music, history, and lectures.

"In honor of Jewish Book Month, we are going to Borders to purchase the most recent novels about Judaism," said Dorothy Gleich, co-chairwoman of the library committee.

Also in honor of Jewish Book Month, Freundlich will review "My Father's Testament," a saga of a Holocaust survivor by Edward Gastfriend. The date of this event has not been decided.

Because Kistallnacht is observed on Nov. 9, Leonard Felder, a psychologist in private practice in West Los Angeles, will speak on Shabbat, Friday evening, Nov. 9. Felder is the author of six books that have sold more than 850,000 copies and have been translated into 12 languages. His books include The Ten Challenges, Making Peace With Yourself, A Fresh Start, When a Loved One is Ill, Does Someone at Work Treat You Badly? and the best seller Making Peace With Your Parents, which won the 1985 Book of the Year Award from the Medical Self-Care Magazine.
