Eight local librarians from Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties recently attended the national conference of the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL).
"I learn so much from the sessions and from just talking to people," said Sharon Argov, librarian at Yeshiva High School in Boca Raton. "There's nothing more energizing than being with a crowd of people who share your interests and professional aspirations."
More than 300 Judaica librarians from as far away as Israel and South Africa attended AJL's 37th annual convention, held in Denver. The four-day event included meetings and workshops on topics ranging from the digitization of Yiddish books to techniques for Jewish storytelling.
Kathleen Clotfelter retired this yar from the library at Donna Klein Jewish Academy in Boca Raton and she remains active in AJL. She participated in a panel on Jewish children's literature. Heidi Estrin, of Congregation B'nai Israel in Boca Raton, presented a workshop on using secular storybooks to teach children Jewish values. She is president of AJL's South Florida Chapter, which holds its own meetings several times year.
Chapter members share expertise on book purchasing, policy-making, and planning programs. They bring in Jewish authors and other speakers, and they provide information and advice to organizations establishing new libraries.
