Dear Grolemunds from America

On the occasion of the Beinwil Swiss Grolimund meeting in May, Carlos
and Claudia Grolimund from Madrid, Spain handed me over your email address.
Since years I am working on a book on Grolimund from Beinwil. For that
reason I am interested in every relative of the wider Grolimund family
and similar written names, since our name was written differently until this
century. I would appreciate it [if] you could make indications on your family's
origin (and of other American Grolimund relatives as well of course).

My address:
                 Alois Grolimund-Bossard
                 Gehrenmatt 532
                 CH-4616 Kappel
                 Switzerland

Thanking your very much in advance I'm looking forward to your response.

Best regard
Alois Grolimund

Hi Alois,

Thank you for the e-mail. I am sorry I was not in Switzerland for the
Grolimund reunion at Beinwil. Carlos told me that Paco also did not
attend. I know that you and Paco would have had a lot of notes to compare.

I, myself, do not have many notes on the Grolemund family of Pennsylvania
before my great-grandfather listed below. Also, my mother was a S[-----]er,
not a Sternberger (a privacy issue on the net), and I have no knowledge of
that origin either.

I will take your request with me to my brother when I go to Pennslyvania
in July. He (Andy) has some information, maybe more than I have.

Carlos said that you were very happy with the success of the Grolimund Fest.
Congratulations to the efforts made by everyone to help to organize the fest.

Paco and Carlos[+Claudia] sent me a family tree and I am sure they mailed a
copy to you. I was able to put it on my web page at this address:
https://www.angelfire.com/fl/willnet1/Grolimund.html

This note (and this page) is inserted to the web in America:

William "Bill" Grolemund in Norte Americano is searching for a missing
link to connect his ancestor, John Grolemund (born 1816-Nov-25), to
one of the European branches. We think John came to America from Baden
in 1850. He married Catherine Greenawalt and had 13 children.

The children were: Anna Maria 1851, Joseph Anthony 1852, John S 1853,
Margaret M 1855, William 1856, Julia Ann 1858, Otto James 1859,
Catherine Philomena 1860, Andrew J 1862, Unnamed 1865 died at birth,
Leo J 1866, Edward C 1868, Charles A 1873. Plese e-mail any information....

Thank you, cousins.

By the way, it was from:
"Stephan Grolimund" <Stephan.Grolimund@computer.org>
in France that I got your address and gave it to Carlos many months ago.
I guess that you are a famous Grolimund Genealogist known in many countries,
even in the USA. Obwohl das in Spass ist, ich meine das in ernst. Meine
ehemalige frau war eine Deutsche und ich habe drei oder vier Jahre in
Deutschland gewohnt. Ich war bei der militaer.

I hope that you have more Golimund Fests and that [we] the Americans will be
able to come to one soon.

Best regards.

Bill (Wilhelm) Grolemund, Florida, USA.

Although I say that jokingly, I mean it seriously. My former wife was a German, and I lived for three or four years in Germany. I was with the military.

Dear Bill

Thank you for your prompt reply

There is a Joanes (Johann), Bürger of Beinwil in the Schwarzbubenland, who
is born as Josephus Carolus (Joseph Karl) 1776 - 1848 and Anna Maria Karrer`s
youngest son. We suppose that he died in Lucinda/Klareon. He should be your
great-grandfather. [=Clarion County, Pennsylvania]

His oldest brother Anton 1801 - 1862 is Carlo`s (1920) great-grandfather.
You will probably find them on Carlo`s family tree.

Sister Catharina born 1812 married Holzher(r) emigrateed in 1854 from Bärschwil
(nigthtboor village from Grindel (visited to Carlos and Claudia) to the USA.

So Alois - Andy - Bill - Carlos - Paco - Stefan belong to the same Grolimund
branch in case this is John.

Below please find a list of old related Grolimund family names:

Grolimung,Grollimund, Grolimond, Groslimond,
Grolimundt, Grolimunt, Grollomunt, Grolimount.

More information lather.

Kind regards

Alois

Hallo Stephan

Buch "The Family of the Jura", das Willy auch gelesen hat, kurz erwähnt.

Besten Dank für die Suche des kleinen Dörfleins in Frankreich.

Uebrigens: Bill war in Deutschland im Militär und scheint Deutsch zu sprechen.

Viele Grüsse

Alois Grolimund

Translation of Alois letter above

Hello Stephan

The long search has now come to fruition.

Owing to you, your father, Carlos+Claudia and Bill, I could find out,
that Bill from America, [I'm] 99% sure, is related to us. (I must
still research the exact baptismal date in the state archives, to be
completely sure of this.) Carlos' [great-grand]father [Anton 1801] and
Bill`s great-grandfather (John 1816) were brothers. The connections
with us are known to me. Can you inform that to your father on occasion?
Willy and Carlos (Jr.) have gotten to know each other at the party in
Beinwil. John`s death is briefly mentioned in the [Hengy] book, "The
Family of the Jura," which Willy has also read.

Thank you very much for the search in the small villages in France.

By the way: Bill was in Germany in the military and appears to speak German.

Many greetings

Alois Grolimund

Hindsight memo after my vacation in Pennsylvania.

I believe Aileen is the author of the "Family of the Jura" which
is referenced by Alois. During my July 4 vacation to Pennsylvania, I
read from a source in California that Aileen Murphy Zsenyuk was a
great grand daughter of Caroline Hengy (Grolemund), the daughter of
Simon Grolimund (2/15/1838 -1924) and Josephine Brossi (1840-1910),
who was the daughter of Urs Brossi, Jr (1803-1877) and Eliz. Crevoiserat
(1804-1886). Simon was the son of Josef Grolimund / Grandmont (1808)
and Anna Maria Lutz. This Joseph (1808) was the younger brother of
Anton (1801) and the older brother of Katharina (1812) and Johann (1816)
(John - my great grand father). See chart of Grolimund tree
from Georgius (1590-1676).

The source from California suggested that the emphasis of Aileen's
book, The Family of the Jura was on the history of the Hengy
family. It appears that the data on Joseph and earlier was a bit
sketchy and a lot of guesswork. The use of the Grandmont name
seems to start with Joseph, son of Simon. I venture a guess
that the intent was to become a complete Frenchman with a change
of name. Or maybe he knew something more about the origins than
we are able to now discover, and he was just returning to the
"original" name. (That is doubtful to me.) I would welcome any
speculation from the French, Detroit, California (Fred 1881-1975), or
any other cousins.

I will continue this thought later (and maybe move it to a new thread.)

Hi Bill and cousins in spain,

I've passed again a free day in the Staatsarchiv Solothurn and
proofed the family of Caroli and A.M.Karrer. The script of the
book of the baptisted is hardly readabel. A friend has helped
me. The dates of birth are not written in numbers, but in
language latino with the old expressions.

The children were born and baptised:

Antonius 9.3.1801 Patrinis:Ant.Heggend.+A.M.Halbeisen

Josephus 13.6.1808 Patrinis: Josef Lutz+A.M.Halbeisen

Catharina 13.7.1812 Patrinis: Joanes Borer + A.M.Werli On The
22.1.1836 she beared a daughter illegitim named Florentina. On the
20.1.1836 she reported something to the judge, but it would furned
away. The comun of citizen have had a savings account from the
Katharina. For this raison she was presumed dead in 1932.

After the marriage whit Franz Josef Holzher(r) on the 5.4.1839, I found
4 Children: Casimir 1842, Adolph 1845, Franz Xaver 1850, Josepha 1852.

In the list of emmigration 1854 from Bärschwil, I found:
Holzher Franz Josef, his wife, Casimir and Xaver.
This of the reason you will meet a Holzherr.

Joanes 25.11.1816 Patrinis: Josef Borer + Kath. Spaar
This is the reason why we are sure, that is your great-grandfather.

For the case we don't hear something from each other I wish you nice
holidays by your brother Andy and a lot of success by your enquiries.

Alois Grolimund, Switzerland

More to follow. I just need more time to
catch up on being back from vacation, and
being behind at work. My e-mail also got
behind while I was up in Pennsylvania. Andy's
daughter has a computer, but I didn't get to
visit with her. I saw her a few times when
she brought Logan (18 month tiger) over to
Grandma and Grandpa to baby sit while she
and her husband went to their jobs.

= = = = = = = = = =

Meanwhile, on July 5, we had our own
GROLEMUND FEST in the town of Fryburg
in Pennsylvania, where Andy lives now.
All five (5) of us were able to attend
and a great time was had by all. Andy's
two boys came, and also Rosie's daughter.
Bernie's boy stopped by on his way to work.
A few of their grandchildren were there
(my grand nephews and nieces). Everyone
seemed to be in pretty good health, no
major problems. Someone remarked that
the polaroid picture made us look younger
than we did in 1985 (?) when we had a
previous group picture. Well, maybe we
finally found that elixir of youth???
Don't tell anyone.
