*Rain's Gonna Wash Away I Believe This*
Stories
================================
~Short stories on or inspired by Matchbox 20~
I read the story based on 3AM, and I was inspired to write a story of my own. I tried to do Push, 'cause it's my favorite, but I've come to the conclusion that it's so awesome it doesn't need any interpretations. Anyways, this story is based on Long Day. It's kind of long, but I hope you like it.

"Long Day" by Jenni R.

I still have the letter. It's sitting by my coat, on the second shelf. It brings back a lot of painful memories every time I walk by, but I can't bring myself to throw it away.

It was so good to get home that day. I woke up late that morning, and things had just gotten worse. My boss had a fit because the factory screwed up an order, our biggest client left for a larger firm, and contract negotiations with another client were slow and tedious.

I walked into the house and threw my coat on the chair next to the door.

"Hey, baby, I'm home!" I called, waiting for her to run into my arms like she always did. I knew that if I could hold her, I would forget all about my rotten day.

Instead, there was silence.

"Baby?"

It was then that I saw the note. It was on the second shelf of the bookcase next to my coat. The pale pink paper was folded in half, and my name was written on it in her scrolling letters. She had propped it up next to a picture of us grinning, with our arms around each other.

Hands trembling, I reached for it and pulled it open. Tears filled my eyes as I started to read.

Baby, you know I love you, right? Because I do. You're the only one that understands me, so I hope you'll understand now. You've always been there for me, and I don't know what I would have done without you. That's the hardest part. Knowing how much this is going to hurt you. I'm sorry... Love, me

I finished the letter as I made my way to the bedroom. My heart skipped a beat when I saw what was inside. Or, rather, what wasn't there. It was her, but it wasn't.

She lay, pale and lifeless, on the bed, next to half a dozen empty pill bottles.

"No!" I cried, and ran towards her.

I grabbed her shoulders and shook her as hard as I could.

"Wake up, dammit!" I sobbed, and hugged her close to my chest one last time.

"Come on, baby... It's me... I'm always here... I won't go away... Now who's going to put up with all my sh*t?" I forced a smile, but it didn't matter. She couldn't see. "It was always you. Did you know that?"

I reached down into my pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. I was going to give it to her at dinner that night. It was the hope that kept me going all day, because I knew that once she put on that gold band with a single diamond in the center, everything would be perfect.

Then, I got angry.

"Fine!" I screamed. "You do that! Take the easy way out! Well too damn bad, you're gone, so what?"

I picked up the bedside lamp and slammed it against the far wall. It crashed to the floor in a million pieces, and I dropped to my knees, shaking.

Oh, God, I thought, I shouldn't feel this way. This has been the longest day of my life.

Concert Reviews

~Matchbox 20 concert experiances~

I am writing in regard to the September 6 show Matchbox 20 played at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. Let me be the first to say "they kicked ass". Not only is the show spectacular, but the guys themselves are possibly the coolest, most down-to-earth band I've seen. They really got into the show and worked with the crowd (over 5,000 screaming fans at an outdoor venue). They played songs off of "Yourself..." as well as some tunes that weren't covered on the album. They did justice to "Time after time", remade from the '80s. Based on what I saw there, I can only imagine how great their next album and tour is going to be. All I can say is that, if you aren't familiar with this band yet, "what are you waiting for?"
-cbowgr02@purduenc.edu

I have something- I saw the band at Buzzfest in Houston on August 30. Rob laid down on the stage-apparently he thought it was very comfortable. He stood up after with the spotlight on him and his guitar. He told us how it had been his dream to be standing on stage with fans in front of him, just him and his guitar. He sang that song Time after Time....I think he had half the Woodlands crying, it was so beautiful.

If any of you had the chance to catch Rob and the gang on Jay Leno September 4th, like I did, you would be amazed and, yet, disappointed at the same time. The band did an excellent job. Paul was in the back, pounding on his drums and occasionally singing along. He had gone along and dyed his hair dark brown, but it was still in his same slicked down hair style. To all of our surprises, Adam had gone out and cut off his infamous shoulder-length black curly hair. It looked good, anyway. Kyle looked the same as I had remembered, but only this time he was wearing this really hot shirt that you could see through. (Whoever chose the outfits for these guys, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!) Brian was in the back, keeping Paul company, I guess. He had also dyed his hair, but it was his natural brown with blonde streaks all around his head. And then there was Rob. His hair had grown out a bit, and appeared to be dyed a few shades lighter than his natural color. He was wearing a tan "bed-spread-material" shirt with tight black pants. He seemed to have gained a bit of weight, but he, along with all the guys, looked as good as they ever did before. (If anyone knows what shade and brand eyeshadow Rob was wearing for the performance, e-mail me at Melanie506@aol.com)

Matchbox20 sang the misunderstood song "Push." Rob was getting so involved with the emotions he was displaying, I thought he was going to cry. Adam, Kyle, and occasionally Paul provided excellent background vocals. Not one evident mistake in the entire song. Way to go, guys. The only parts that were disappointing was that the guys didn't do another song and that Jay didn't interview them. If only Jay didn't spend half an hour on a monolouge. Damn. ("Doesn't it make you want to think, damn...") Well, to wrap this review up, the performance was one of the classics on Leno. I'm so glad I taped it. And on another note, this time Rob didn't drop the microphone. -Melanie506@aol.com

I had the best time at a radio show a couple of weeks ago. This radio station in San Jose, CA put together a concert for the Surf Rider Foundation with the coolest line up.Lets see um..., Sugar Ray, Fiona Apple, Smash Mouth, Local H, Cake, Third Eye Blind, Social Distortion, Violent Femmes, Dance Hall Crashers, Reel Big Fish,Blink 182, Buck O' Nine, Ben Harper, and uh.........oh yeah, MATCHBOX 20. They are the best band to see live. When the drums start pounding and the guitars start playing, you can feel the music pulse through your body (kinda like when you stand too close to speakers). Then, when Rob starts singing, your finger tips tingle, and you can feel your heart beating in your throut ever time you take a breathe to absorb it all in that you're actually watching them play. It was really exciting for me to know that they were, where I was. Performing live, right there. It was wild. I went with six of my friends and had a blast. If you have a chance to, go see them live. You'll have fun. -Jeanne (JLee992769@aol.com)

Hey guys & gals,

Here's my concert review, as promised to y'all who emailed me for it! Sorry it's a few days late, but my email box was flooded, & I had to catch up with everything. BTW, it's a long post, but it was an awesome night with so many highlights! he he

Ok, the guys played at the Crown Casino, Melbourne, Australia on Sept 23rd. It took me about 1/2 an hour to find the Mercury Lounge where they were to play, [alcohol plays havoc with my sense of understanding directions given by security guards :) ]. So I finally get in there & proceed to look for my 2 friends who I'd lost in the process. My immediate thought was to go to the bar & get a couple of drinks, so after that, hands full, I make my way across the room, which was pretty packed by then, and find myself running into the stage, right in front of Kyle's mike!! I thought this would be a pretty cool spot to park, so I stayed put. I asked the guitar tech whether the guys did meet & greets after the show, and he said they probably would, so naturally I was stoked. (I was armed with album cover & texta in my pocket) Then the guys finally come out on stage - and I'm staring straight up at Kyle. They sounded awesome, and they actually aren't as big as they look on tv!

So anyways, after about the 2nd or 3rd song they have a pause in the set, so I yelled out "Kyle" He turned around & looked at me - I think he was surprised! I asked if I could have his setlist when he was finished with it & he said sure! Cool! I was stoked. After they'd finished their set, Kyle handed me his guitar pick & the setlist, which he had quite a bit of trouble getting off his guitar pedal! The chick next to me tried to grab it, but he made sure I got it. he he.

So here's the correct setlist: Argue
Girl like that
Damn --- Rob introduced this song saying it was about fucking up!
Back 2 Good
3am
U & I
Real World
Shame
Hang
Time after time --- Cyndi Lauper cover (just Kyle & Rob)
Tired - new song
Kody
Push
----
Busted
Long Day

During Busted (my fave) Rob was using 2 mikes, one looked like a cb handpiece. The crowd didn't really know any of the songs, although I could hear them singing to push & long day over kyles guitar amp (which was right in front of me & had my drinks sitting under it. I could feel the breeze coming out of it all thru the show which was quite nice!)

So, after I've got the setlist & pick, I decide to high-tail it to the ladies room while I could, so I would be able to wait for them to come out for meet & greet. Shortly after I got back, I was standing at the bar, and Kyle comes out the door nearby! He came up to me & introduced himself - obviously I already knew who he was, so I told him my name, and we got to talking for a while. I told him how I'd driven 4 hours to see them tonight and he was totally wrapped! He couldn't believe someone would do that to go see them. He kept saying I was really sweet for making the trip (I found later that sweet is the word-of-the-moment with mb20) I asked him if he knew of the mailing lists, but he didn't! None of them did! But they do know of the websites! I asked Kyle what the connection was between mb20 & CFA(Cool For August) & he said the same producer - Matt Serletic - he asked me if I liked CFA & I said yeah - I got their cd (Grand World) a few months back. He seemed surprised at my taste in music, especially when I told him I was going to see Veruca Salt (VS) the next night (he asked where they were playing). I said it was lucky VS's first night had sold out, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to see mb20. Then we got to talking about Bob Rock (VS, Metallica, da de dah) Kyle signed my cd cover: Amanda, to drive 4 hrs equals lots of luv. I thought it was cool that he was totally appreciative of our journey, but that was just the start - all the guys were surprised & wrapped that we'd come so far to see them!

While I was chatting with Kyle, Adam and Brian had come out & were signing stuff for ppl, so I went over & joined them. Adam wrote : Am's, Love ya, neat smiles! I guess he meant when they were playing my favourite parts of the songs! Brian wrote : 4 hrs, you're cool!

I turned around and Paul was standing behind me, looking at Kyle, who was pointing to me, telling him to sign my stuff. His hair was red, so I said, luv the colour (coz mine's now dyed red), and he laughed. I went to get a drink, and Kyle was still standing at the bar, so we talked again. He said "You're so sweet, give me a hug" So I got a hug, he he :) I was telling him how I love the drums of VS's 8 Arms to hold u, and how I wanna learn to play the drums. He said if I ask Paul, he would take me out the back & teach me - at which I promptly started laughing. I looked up & Kyle was looking at me strange - he was actually being serious!!! Then I asked him what Hey Hey It's Saturday was like, and he said it was totally crazy! I congratulated him on their great performance on both Leno & Hey Hey! While I was talking to Kyle, these guys came up and got him to sign $5 & $10 notes, coz they had nothing else to get signed. I became known as 'texta gal' Coz no-one else had a texta either! There was another guy who offered to buy Kyle a drink, he said sure a Jack D & coke, so this guy (his name was Chem) buys him the drink, gives it to him, and then proceeds to take it back & drink out of it every couple of minutes. Then he offers Kyle a cig, so he lights it for him, then takes his cigarette & puts it in Kyles mouth too! So poor Kyle's standing there, 2 fags in his mouth at once, chem drinking his JD, while he's signing stuff! It was hilarious, and really cool how Kyle never once even looked pissed off with the antics of all the /(us) drunks.

I had to go chasing my texta half-way across the room, and ended up chatting to Adam & Brian again, Brian was smoking Camel cigs, and everyone kept botting them off him!- he ended up with hardly any left poor bloke! Then I found my friends. They'd been upstairs the whole time, watching me dancing & singing down the front!

I turned to go to the bar again, and Rob was sitting on the stage right by me. He was signing stuff, So I sat on the stage next to him, and of course told him about the drive, and stuff! He was really cool, and very appreciative of our effort, (as were all the guys) I asked him what colour his nails were, and he showed me - gold, I said, oh! the same as on Hey Hey, and he goes, yeah!, you saw that huh? Yup!! I surely did!

Then my friend comes up to me. The other girl with her had dared her to get her chest signed by Rob, (for a drink), So I asked Rob, and told him she got a free drink, so he signed "For a drink" It was cool! - Then Michelle decided she wanted more signatures (she's very quiet when she's sober *g*), so I asked Kyle, and he said sure & signed her chest too! then we got, I think it was Brian (have to wait for the pics to be sure) signed her also! So Michelle got 3 signatures, and I got 5 on my cd cover & 5 on my setlist. And Kyle also signed the guitar pic! So of course we were happy. We said c'ya to the guys, coz they were leaving, and I told them how some of you guys on the list had asked me for reviews, and they said to be kind to us - my response, of course! :)

So there's my huge review, I'm not sorry it's long, coz it was such a cool night, and just writing about it brings back more memories, I will never forget. I forgot to ask about Tabitha's Secret, but Kyle said he'd see me soon, so I'm wondering if they're planning another tour down under sometime after the states???? - Hope so! For those who haven't seen the guys live, DO IT! they blow the album away!! As did Veruca Salt the next night, but that's another review *g* Both bands absolutely kick ass in concert, and I'm going to see VS for the 2nd time in a week on Wed, so I can't wait to do it all again.

I've probably left out so much, but I'll post it separately if I have. If anyone wants to mail me, feel free!

~Your MB20 dreams. No matter how bizarre...~

I HAVE HAD ONE WIERD DREAM ABOUT MATCHBOX 20.

I WAS AT WAL-MART DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR THE CHECK OUT LINES AND ADAM WALKED UP TO ME AND LED ME AROUND IN CIRCLES TRYING TO MAKE ME BUY STUFF. BRIAN, WHO WAS THE STORE MANAGER, CAME UP BEHIND US AND STARTED SHOWING ME ALL THESE NEW T-SHIRTS. ROB, KYLE, AND MARK FROM SUGAR RAY WERE SHOPPING IN THE LITTLE GIRLS DEPARTMENT AND ASKED ME IF I KNEW WHERE THE BEDDING DEPT. WAS. PAUL WAS RUNNING AROUND KNOCKING STUFF OFF OF THE SHELVES WITH ED KOWALCZYK OF LIVE AND ADAM JOINED IN. I OPENED A BOX OF CRACKERS AND SAT DOWN TO EAT. NEEDLESS TO SAY I NEVER GOT TO THE CHECK OUT LINES. WIERD? I KNOW. I HAVE REALLY WIERD DREAMS ALL THE TIME. I HAVE NOTICED THAT NOTHING REALLY HAPPENS IN THEM. THANKS,

"eyeshadow"
Amber Warnke

i'm not sure why
just the sight of you
makes me giddy
or your voice, that passion (damn),
tugs at me inside

tonight you wore
eyeshadow and earrings
in both ears
and your hair waved crazy like mine
you wore black
and your microphone was fucked up
while you sang "push"

but i still felt the same
anyway

"Rob Thomas"
Amber Warnke

i love
the way you wail
when you
can't help
but feel the music
inside of you

"don't breathe"
Amber Warnke

inhaled:

slow, tricky smile
expressive eyes
quick intense body
agitated motions of
hands arms shoulders
passionate words

i don't want to
let it out
from inside me

"touch of hands"
Amber Warnke

my innocent self wants to know
if you make love the way
you make music

~Anything that doesn't seem to fit anywhere else~

Just thought I'd offer up this little rumour i've heard. i just want to make it clear, this is a *rumour*. There may be absolutely no truth to it all, I have no idea. Anyway, I heard...that Rob is currently dating Sal, lead singer of Artificial Joy Club. -KssMeBlind@aol.com

Well just a bit of information on the guys. Tickets went on sale on Sat. for their concert, in Detriot at the Fox Theature. And they sold out by noon. Cool. Well anyways, just had to share that bit of info. =o) ~Jamie HarmonyChk@aol.com

This doesn't really pertain to anything but I was wondering if anyone else out there saw MTV vj Toby Amies bash our band. They played the "Push" video, and you were supposed to call in and list at least 3 frustrating situations Rob Thomas finds himself in throughout the video, and you got a t-shirt. Toby kindly added "frustrating situations other than being in this band." On top of that, a caller after the video said something about Rob thinking he's cool, and the two of them (the caller and Toby) proceded to dis Matchbox 20 some more. Then Toby sent the guy 2 t-shirts! Now, I don't think very highly of MTV in the first place, but this angered me enough want to kill my television. We need to get Toby sent back to wherever he came from, pronto! -Flicky5000@aol.com

I wrote a sentence using the names of the songs. Here it is: It was another long day in the real world. At 3 a.m. a girl like that pushed me around. We started to argue and she busted me lip. I screamed Damn when kody came along and tried to get it back to good. We both felt shame and decided we'd just try to hang. -geauxro@dbtech.net

I read an article somewhere 'bout three months ago, I can't find it now,so I'm telling this story based entirely on what I recall, so if I mess up with some of the details, sorry all.

The place is somewhere in Florida, sometime in 1993. Tabitha's Secret was a vivacious young band consisting of Rob Thomas singin' vocals, Paul Doucette behind the drums, and Brian Yale on bass, with whom we are all familiar. Along with them we could find the guitar talents of Jay Stanley and John Goff. Tabitha's Secret was playing a show. At the same gig was another young band by the name of 7Mary3. Amidst the audience that day was a record label honcho know as Matt Serletic. Both bands played there respective sets, and Mr. Serletic watched. Apparently he liked what he saw. A few weeks later, 7Mary3 signed a record deal with him.

I know what y'all are thinking, Who cares? What the hell does that have to do with MB20?! I do have a point, so just keep reading......

Now, you have to understand that despite great local success, including several top ten and number one hits on area radio stations; ie. '3am' ( sound familiar?) 'Forever December' and 'Tired', Tabitha's Secret was having its share of troubles within the band. News of the signing was the proverbial fly that broke the camels back. After a year and a half together, the group disbanded, but had not gone without catching the attention of the same Mr Serletic. Brian, Rob, and Paul remained together, bringing us to 1994. In come two new faces, I think we all know who they are. Welcome Adam and Kyle. :-) Next, we need a name, I think we all know that story as well. After two years in the studio, and a year on the road, the situation could not be better for everyone involved.

So, the next time we sit down to listen to the album, Yourself or Someone like You just leave a little room in your hearts to thank 7Mary3 for their unintentional, indirect, yet very significant contribution to THE greatest band in music history.....Matchbox 20!

I'd just like to contribute a dash of local dramatic irony...... The past two years a regional radio station 'Rock 101' (whom, I'd like to add, kick some serious ass) has put on an outdoor summer show at Loon Mnt. (In the white mountains of NH) know as the "GIANT GIG" In it's first year, 1996, the feature band was, yes, 7Mary3. And this year, the feature band was...... guess who?
Pretty funky shit if ya ask me...
That's my story.

Here are a few quotes from the band when they played Purdue University on September 6th... P>** "O.K., so, I'm not gonna tell the security guards how to do their jobs or anything 'cause most of them are pretty cool, but, be gentle with these people. Like this girl who just got pulled off the stage when all she wanted to do was shake my hand. Just be careful guys." **
(in reference to a girl at the Purdue concert) -Rob

** "Watch out guys because people are getting kicked in the head with boots and shit..." ** (in reference to the people crowdsurfing at the Purdue concert) -Rob

** "I just want everybody to go, pardon my language, 'butt-fucking' crazy." **
(what Rob said right before closing the show with "Push")
-cbowgr02@purduenc.edu

There's an artical about the guys in the Nov '97 issue of Maximum Guitar........Here's a few things they pulled out to but with pics.......
"You know how we're gonna combat this 'faceless band' theory? By making every single person in the United States love us."-Adam Gaynor "Critics don't like us because there's nothing to latch onto and write about. No one in the band is dying of a heroin addiction...we're just out there playing."-Kyle Cook
"Not to be arrogant about it, but we're playing the DAVID LETTERMAN show tomorrow night. That critic who called us bland and timid, what's he doing?"-Rob Thomas
"The record company would kill us for saying it, but we almost want to tell fans when we meet them 'Stop buying this record!' so we can go in and make the next one."-Brian Yale
~~~Rob also put in a word about Matchbox's comparission to other bands......"People have compared us to Counting Crows and Live and I don't get that at all. It's like, have you listened to the record?"
~~~One last thing I'd like to add which is more a feeling, is that I've heard more than once someone put down the band on T.V. (ex: Toby on MTV Live not to long ago), and I personally think that no band or singer (or writer, etc. for that matter) deserves to dissed for their hard work. I know, of course, that some bands don't write their own stuff and that sorta thing, but Matchbox 20 certainly does, and it's wrong to criticize people when they've had thier share of crappy days trying to reach the top.
-CrewGal826@aol.com

I have a quote I think you'll like. I met Rob when they played here August 24 (Milwaukee, WI). We were talking for about ten minutes and when I could tell he had to go I mentioned "Well, I'll be in the front row" and he followed that up by "I'll be on stage" !!! I thought that was kinda funny (or dumb & obvious) !!! Oh well, it came out of Rob's mouth and to my ear and I was (am) happy! Hope you get to use it! Thanks,

A. Kyle is the one on the left, and in the blue shirt. He has the blonde hair. He is the one that kicks the wall and kicks over the can.

2. I had a question about Tabitha's Secret- I had heard that there album "Don't play with matches" would be out in November- I was wondering if there was a specific date on which it was coming out because I really want to get it!
