Concert Reviews

~Matchbox 20 concert experiences~

Hi! Just wanted to send this in for the Long Day 'Zine. Myself, Traci, and my friend, Sarah, along with another friend, Jennifer went to see Matchbox 20 in San Antonio at the Majestic Theatre on Dec. 29, 1997 8:00 pm. We got to the theatre at 6:30 pm and immediately ran to the back of the theatre to get a glimpse of the members of Matchbox 20. We saw Kyle across the street at the hotel they were staying and he was walking with his girlfriend. We freaked out and ran closer to the entrance of the hotel although he had gone inside. We stood around and noticed some girls and crew members standing around outside at the back entrance of the theatre. Then we saw Brian walking across the street toward the hotel where we were standing. It seemed like he was going to pass us and go right into the hotel but I got some nerve and called out to him. I asked for his autograph and he was like "Sure!" My friends came running over. He signed my issue of the Maximum Guitar magazine and he and when he saw his picture and said "That's me! What am I looking at?" referring to the pic. in which he is looking down and holding his bass. He signed it "Traci-Dat's me (with a little arrow pointing to his pic.) What a dork! See Ya-Brian Yale" and he drew a tiny circle with a "20" in it. My friend let him sign some looseleaf paper and he wrote "Sarah-I feel like I'm writing a term paper!! Dank U y B'bye-Brian Yale" again with a little "20". He was so goofy that Sarah almost thought he was high. He was wearing a long-sleeve purple thermal shirt that had a patch that said "The Fillmore-San Francisco." I wanted to tell him that my dad had always wanted to go to the Fillmore but I didn't know if that would sound stupid so I didn't say it. He was smoking a cigar that looked like a cigarette and smelled very sweet. While he was giving us his autograph people kept walking by, they were probably tourists, and they kept staring at us like "Who is this!?" He flicked his cigar and after he left we wanted to save the ashes but Sarah wouldn't let us. She thought me and Jennifer were crazy! While we were with Brian, Paul walked past us and went right into the hotel so we didn't get his autograph and that moment. We met 2 girls who were waiting for Rob. One of them called me over to sit with them and told me to turn around. When I did, I saw Adam sitting in the hotel bar with his girlfriend. We waited some more and got closer to the door of the backstage and Kyle came with his girlfriend. He was wearing a snazzy outfit-black suit and a orange shirt with tinted orange classes. We were so shocked that he just walked past us and said "Hey girls!" His girlfriend seemed like a snob and Kyle went inside without her!! I guess he remembered about her and then came back outside. This time I went up to him and asked for his autograph. He spoke with a cute but phony accent. Although i asked for his autograph first, my friends Sarah and Jen got their's first by pushing ahead! I wanted to yell at them but I didn't want to make a scene in front of Kyle. He smelled great! Really sweet, like tobacco, but really good. My coat stills smells like him and i'm never going to wash it! He signed Sarah's paper "Sarah-Thanks so much Kyle Cook" and told her that he liked her vintage coat with a fur collar. We had made so much fun of her coat but Brian, Kyle, Adam, and Paul all told her they liked it! I was so jealous!! They all kept asking us how to sspell Sarah and Traci so we would say "with an H" and "with an I" Kyle singed my mag. "Traci- with an I Kyle Cook. Sarah and I both liked him the most. Jen asked for a hug and he gave her one. I kept calling Sarah over so she could get a hug too but she wouldn't come. So I asked Kyle for hug and he said "Sure!" so we hugged and he smelled so good!!! Sarah didn't get a hug and now she regrets it! We saw Rob crossing the street with his girlfriend. We totally freaked and starting running and all these things fell out of my bag! Sarah kept running without me so I didn't get to see Rob but she said that he didn't even stop and but she said he waved without looking at anyone. They said her girlfriend was not pretty and one girl that had been waiting to meet him looked like she was going to cry because he didn't stop. Then Adam came with his girlfriend. He was wearing dark glasses and a black coat. He said hi to us and i asked for his autograph. He signed my mag. "Traci-much love T-ya! Adam" and he signed Sarah's "Sarah! Hey girl!! Love, Adam" with a little "20" and a circle around it. He asked how i was and introduced us me to his girlfriend although he just said she was his friend. She just sort of smiled and he gave her a kiss on her cheek. Then we saw Paul who came by himself and Sarah thought he was Micheal Stipe from REM (she's crazy). He was wearing a black coat, a black ski cap and sunglasses. I was as tall and him and Brian. Their promotional tour person woman and asked us if we wanted some poster and gave us posters of the band if we answered some questions about the band correctly. The poster is pretty small with a marble-like background and the band on the set of the "Push" video with Rob sitting on the bed and the guys behind him. She asked what song was #6 and i said "Back 2 good" and she didn't give to me! Paul came to my defense and said "Hey, she was right!" and she asked what the last song on the cd is and i said "Hang" so she gave me a poster. She asked the girl who was waiting for Rob to sing the chorus of "Real World" and she sang it and gave her a poster and felt sorry for everyone else and gave all of them one. Paul signed it "Traci-This is me(with an arrow pointing to him on the poster) P(au)l Doucette" and on Sarah's he put "Sarah- Thanks Miss Fur (referring to her crazy coat) Pl Doucette." Jen asked him to say "Hi" to Rob for us but I'm not sure if he remembered. She also asked Kyle if Rob would come out again but he said mostly likely not. One girl told us that his girlfriend lived here in San Antonio and that's why they were together so much. I didn't really know what to say to them and I felt even more nervous with their girlfriends watching. Everything would have been really great if we had gotten to meet Rob, who was wearing a green furry coat and his black shirt that looks like it has 2 dragons on both sides on the front. He was not wearing his leather pants but grey slacks. But Brian, Kyle, Adam, and Paul didn't really make me feel like I should be nervous and didn't seem stuck up at all. The concert was great! We had seats in the 12th row, which was pretty close. They played all their songs except for Argue and one song that he said he never played for anyone else, but I don't think he mentioned the title. Then he played a song by himself and asked for some quite so he could have some "jewel time" but i don't think he mentioned the name to the song. On one of the songs he messed up and forget and stumbled over some words but not many people noticed. A girl on the balcony yelled when it was quite "I love you Rob" and everyone and Rob laughed and said "Thank you." Later he picked up a woman's black bra and put it on the microphone. The concert seemed really short although they played many songs but I wished it had lasted longer. But all in all, it was still a wonderful experience.

Ok I just saw MB20 on Dec. 30 at the Bronco Bowl. After we paid 5$ for parking we stood in line for about thirty min. waiting to get inside. Finally we found our seets, Section N row E. These were awesome spots!!! You could see everything!!! Anyway the stage was pretty small and the concert was sold out, we waited for about 40 min. until the first band hit the stage, I don't remember the name but it was sorta techo but also kinda pop mixed, I didn't like them much and I think the man behind me kinda agreed, he was funny with all his remarks but it also got annoying, well anyway everyone cheered when they left the stage. It was about 20 minutes until Matchbox 20 hit the stage, opening with Busted which sounded awesome, I can't remember the order but once Real World hit everyone stood up and sang along.
Also before Back 2 Good started Rob said "This is my favorite song, not good song but f*cking song" at least from what I could hear thats what he said, of course everyone laughed and they played Back 2 Good, I love that song!!! "If anyone owns our record and are just f*cking sick of it here's a different for you" and then they played Tired. Of course before Da*n started he said "This song is about getting laid, if you ever had trouble trying, guys" as he pointed to the audience. Oh Kyle was wearing black jeans with a black see thru shirt, Rob was wearing tight black leather pants with a silk shirt unbuttoned down until mid chest...Sorry to say but they looked good, Paul was wearing some shirt and I couldn't make it out, same with the other band members.. Anyway the ended with Long Day, in the middle Rob started to sing "Thank you Dallas, Texas, it's been good, have a great New Year Dallas, Texas" and finished the rest of the song. After the show when the were walking off stage Rob took his microphone and disconnected it and tossed to some person. Oh, during the show Rob went over by the drummer and picked up a piece of paper with the drummer's high school pic. On it, he said "What is this f*cking high school, aw I have a highschool picture of our Drummer" and tossed it to the mosh pit, "Sorry didn't mean to show them the hair" he said looking at the drums.
Well now back to after the show, I met them and got a picture with the singer he put 'Bunny Ears' on me and stuck out his tongue so I put devil horns on him and stuck out my tongue. Now that picture is framed, I also have a smaller one thats in a silver locket. When we were going back we had the long discussion about the Wallflowers and Matchbox 20's clothes, there was 3 guys and 3 girls.. Of course us the girls one with saying MB20 looked good in the clothes and The Wallflowers looked and sounded like Momma's Boys (no offense).
Well theres my review...Mb20 definalty did better from the last time I saw them and that's hard to beat!!! ( I also got the MB20 shirt made for the girls.. hehe)

*Keep This Hat of Broken Dreams*
Dreams
================================
~Your MB20 dreams. No matter how bizarre...~

Well, I had a dream about the band (finally!!) and, well, the band was at the food court at the mall here in Georgia and I happen to sit right in front of ..ROB!! (woo who!!) and it was just soo vivid! Every detail of his oh-so-cute face was there! So he is at the food court singing 3am while Adam is playing the guitar and this girl interrupts him and he stops.and I said to him, " Gee, I'm sitting in front of the most gorgeous guy in the world, and .." Then I just blabbered on about nothing, and I dont remember it anyway. Then, some flirty (sorry to say, but) slutty girl comes up (you know, the stereotypical blonde girl) and just interupts me and starts smothering him (of all the nerve!). So, she finally leaves and I just start talking again, but I think I was mostly staring at his face while he stares back at me like I'm some weirdo.
---------
Well, I just got another dream of them last night!! It's kinda small, but here it is anyway, I dreamt that they came out with a Matchbox20 movie!! (you, know how like Spice girls came out with one, well, its the same concept) and they had one of those cardboard setup displays with the band on it, and Rob did not look like Rob, he looked ...ugly!
(which is totally not him in real life) and the movie was like only 45 minutes long! My sister went to go see it and she came out saying it wasn't so good and insisted that the movie is an hour and 30 minutes long. Strange.

Here's a dream I had about the band. It's...different:
I'm my chorus treasurer (I know...I'm a dork) and one day after a meeting, I came home and took a nap because I was exhausted. That is when I proceeded to have this dream~~~The chorus had a meeting where only officers and two of their friends could be there, because we we're getting a pep talk from Matchbox 20. I brought my friends Jenny and Jenni. The other officers are all snobby annoying things and when only Rob and Paul walked in they got pissed because they wanted the whole band to be there. The other officers and their lame friends started fighting each other and Rob and Paul got sick of it and took me and my friends out to lunch, and we met Kyle at Burger King. We bonded, so we all got married! Me and Rob (aww yeah), Jenni and Paul (because at one concert we went to Paul told her she had "cool hair"), and Jenni and Kyle. We moved in together then my mom woke me up to go to work : ( I still love that dream. Now if dreams came true...

I heard on a local radio station that the first thing the Matchbox20 guys did when they found out the CD had gone gold was call their moms.

In the issue of Rolling Stone with Fiona Apple on the cover, there's a picture of Rob and a nice little interview. Hang it on the wall. Also, if you have aol, go to keyword: Rolling Stone and click on "find". Type in Matchbox 20 and there's some awesome pictures of Rob and Kyle : )

Hey I have a kinda cool story...I was in a record store looking around and I heard this lady asking the sales person (who is in his 40's) about the matchbox20 cd because she wanted to get a cd for her son. He had no clue what kinda music it was or anything. So she turned to me and said, "excuse me, have you ever heard of this band?" I'm thinking, Have I heard of them...of course I have!! So I tell her yes and that they are an excellent band and that Yourself... was my absolute Favorite cd. Then she asks me if it is a "girly band" and does it have a lot of swears. I answered no way to both questions. She finally bought the cd. I was happy to spread the word on what an awesome band mb20 is!

I RECENTLY HEARD ON MTV NEWS THAT MATCHBOX 20 WILL BE COVERING A
FLEETWOOD MAC SONG CALLED NEVER GOING BACK. THE TRACK WILL BE ON THE FLEETWOOD MAC TRIBUTE ALBUM, WHICH WE SHOULD BE EXPECTING LATER IN THE YEAR. OTHER ARTISTS ON THE ALBUM INCLUDE ELTON JOHN AND TONIC.

I just had to write and tell everyone that I am going to see Matchbox 20 on February 13. As most of you know, that is the day before Rob's birthday which makes the concert even more special. I have never seen them before. I was so excited to hear that the concert sold out the first day tickets went on sale. The guys are really popular here. My friends and I are baking Rob a birthday cake!!

I was wondering if there are any 'Zine subscribers that live in Western Alabama that are going to the concert. I thought it would be cool to be able to talk to some MB20 fans nearby.
My e-mail address is geauxro@dbtech.net .

And last, I was reading through the old 'Zine's and saw that there were a lot of people who met the guys backstage. I was just wondering how everyone got backstage.
Thanks,
-Ashley

~Feelings on a video, song, band member, issue, etc.~

I would just like to say that the song "Push" makes me jump around. Not for excitement or anything...the beat and the lyrics. The video makes me insane for the fact that I get to see the band. The song is sooo moving to me. "3am" does the same also, but not as much. I know all the words in "3am" and I'm proud of myself for that coz I usually can't do that without a lyric sheet. Oh well. I'm sure the rest of the cd will do the same for me, but I don't have it yet. I ordered it, but it hasn't came in yet. I hope I like it as much. Later

~Answers to all your Matchbox 20 questions~

-Answered by LuvMB203EB@aol.com

1. (I guess this is kinda Matchbox20 related): Does anyone know where I can find Tabitha's Secret lyrics?
-OrangeGrif@aol.com

A. Check out these websites at:
http://www.magicnet.net/rx/audio/tsecret
http://www.forbiddenrecords.com
http://128.61.61.70/tsecret.htm(Also find matchbox20 things there)

2.I have been wondering when did Rob first decide he wanted to sing and realize that he had that talent? Did he take singing lessons, was he in a school choir as a young boy?? Or did he just up and sing one day?
-MBTwenty@aol.com

A. Rob was never in the choir or anything like that, until he was in Atlanta making the album. His sister says that he has always liked being the center of attention. (Thanks Missy!)

3. In the chorus in Kody, what does he say after "Please hand me the bottle I think I'm lonely now." I say he is saying Kody I'm lonely now but my best friend says he is saying lonely I'm lonely now. Who's right??
-geauxro@dbtech.net

A. Sorry to say but I believe your friend is right. The words I am hearing are "Lonely, I'm lonely now".

4. I have a kind of not too important question, but does anyone know the favorite colors of any of the band members? I heard Rob's was black and Adam's was silver, but those might not be right. Thanks!!
-Carrie
Wallbox20@aol.com

5. Do you happen to know what Rob's favorite color is?
-Orangegrif@aol.com

A. To answer both 4 and 5, we will have those answers for you in the next issue of the Zine :).

6.There was a question on our article in Issue #4:
This might not be any of my business, but in the article you listed last month, Rob said "Paul sleeps with men". Is that true. I'm dying to know.
-Renee
renee13@ix.netcom.com

A.<<"Paul sleeps with men!", exclaims Rob, seeming to accept my open invitation. "Rob is a cross-dresser!" retaliates Paul>>
I interpret that as a joke, so I conclude that Paul does not sleep with men.

7. Who is the girl on the sleeve of the cd cover?

A. I rememeber someone asking about this in the last issue, and we were unsure of the answer. We have found out that she is a GAP model. (Thanks Sabrina!)

If Rob is your favorite guy in the band, this is the place to visit! The first link takes you to Rob's temporary birthday page to read his birthday wishes from his most adoring fans. You can then join a fanclub for Rob and read the member profiles. Then read some song lyrics and check out the tour dates to see if they are coming to a city near you. Read the facts on Rob to make sure you know everything about him including what he ate when he was little! What impressed me most about this page was all the rare pictures! We all get sick of seeing the same ones, so come here to see a lot of Rob in concert. And when you are ready to leave, head over to the links page to visit another mb20 site!
