~Matchbox 20 concert experiences (Con't)~

Hey guys!! Ok, this is going to be a very long email so brace yourself... It's from the matchbox20 concert in Pensacola...Here we go.
My friend and I got there around 11 am and pretty much waited there uneventfully before the doors opened at 6:30 pm. oO course, we got front row center. Cool For August opened and did DAMN FINE JOB, then the stage was cleared for matchbox 20.
This screen came down w/ a film w/ montage clips of different scenes and voice overs talking about honesty and love, etc. Then this huge black screen dropped from the ceiling and there was the band! They opened w/ busted and did an 90 minute+ show...some highlights were their covers of "Mercy Mercy Me" by Marvin Gaye (which was beautiful) and "Time After Time"-Cyndi Lauper. I had been hoping they would play a non-album song named "Tired" that I had heard before and knew all the lyrics. So Rob introduced a song as not being on the album, called "Tired" and I freaked out. Well, the song starts out and I'm singing along w/ the first line, word for word--and Rob looks right at me, gets this really shocked looked on his face that I'm singing along, smiles, winks and sticks his tongue out.
After the concert I find my friend who's backstage w/ the band and ask him to get me and my friend I was with backstage and he says he'll do what he can. So I'm watching through the windows and I see him walk over to Rob and they start talking...then Rob starts nodding, walks over to the door, says hi to me and tells the security to let me in. So I go get my friend and we walk inside. The room is really big and all the mb20 guys are standing around talking to fans and record company people. And Rob is standing in the middle of the room w/ 6-7 people crowded around him...as soon as we walk in, he sees me, immediately walks away from the crowd towards me, says "Vanessa baby, what up?" and gives me a huge hug and a kiss! So we talk a little bit and take a picture. He leaves to talk to other people and I talk to Adam, a guitarist. Adam's very very cool and tells me right off the bat that I have wonderful teeth! Then I talk to Kyle, who remembers me from the Atlanta show. He gives me a hug and we take a picture...I gave him a hard time about the generic autograph he gave me in Atlanta, so he takes my paper and signs "Vanessa-my sister, my love, my blood-all the love in the crevices in my being-love Kyle Cook". I turn around and run into Rob, who pulls me aside and says they're all going to the bar at their hotel and asks me to join them--to which I obviously agree. Soon after that we leave to the hotel. We get there, and Rob is sitting at the bar (barefoot??) w/ some friends. I go to the opposite corner of the bar, being intimidated, and am adjusting a button on my shirt when Rob yells from his seat "Vanessa, keep your clothes on!" and everyone turns around and stares. Later Rob comes over to me ,sits down and says he was just kidding, etc etc and it's ok. Later all of us were sitting on a couch and out of nowhere, I go "Hey Rob-I don't have any cartilage in my nose" (some of you know what I'm talking about), grab his hand, and show him. He flips out, saying "That is the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life--it's so cute-you're so cute" and just plays w/ my nose for literally, about 5 minutes while I talk to the others sitting around. Then my friend Sean sits down and I ask him to rub my shoulders and he says no...so I ask Rob to rub my shoulders, he says sure and gives me a massage! So then I sit down with Paul, the drummer, and we have a long conversation about the band Grant Lee Buffalo and other things...It's very cool, we take a picture and that's it...To make a long story short, I walked w/ the band outside to their bus when they were leaving...I got hugs and kisses, then they left.
Awesome.
I love you all
Thanks for listening
Love-van

The Fayetteville concert was *awesome*!!!!!
Matchbox 20 was *incredible* They sang all the songs on the cd plus "Tired", "You and I and I", Rob did a duet with the lead singer from Cool For August and they sang "Time After Time," Kyle sang his song, "Happy," and they sang "Mercy Mercy Me" (an old Marvin Gaye song).

~Expression through words~

Well I am new at this, but I am tremendously influenced by matchbox 20. I am not one of those people who says that they can relate, 'cos really I can't and I'm not gonna try to. I am however influenced by music all together. And I do write lyrics and poems alot. I have written several songs that I've liked and some I have thrown out. but I never learned how to write the actual music. So if anyone knows a way to help me
learn how to write music, let me know. But I don't want to embarrass myself in front of all of you so if you want to read my Matchbox 20-driven lyrics...let me know and help me out with my music-writing skills. Thanks and "Long Day 'Zine" is great...keep up the good work girls.
-Jimbeau@ameritech.net

Well, these poems really aren't about MB20, but I thought I would share them anyways.

Abandonment

Alone in a world of my own
I sit here and wonder,
What exactly is home?

A place full of love,,
A place to run to in times of need.
I watch and wonder what it would be like.

I feel alone and abandoned,
Like nobody cares.
These feelings I keep locked up inside.
For there's nowhere to run--
Nowhere to hide.

I feel like I am the only one,
Who can make things happen,
And ponder 'Will it ever be done?'

Now I know that I am the Power,
Even though I am young--
I, even I can crumble the Tower
--Of Abandonment.

No Title

Time stands still in a lifeless room,
There is music playing in the background.
Still it is empty and cold.
I sit and stare lifelessly at the things around me.
They seem to have no meaning,
A pointless attempt at escape.
Escape from reality, escape from the world
Everything turns backwards.
Days go by slowly and monotonously
Never ceasing to fail.
A lasidaisical soul fills the room.
Boredom, wasting away, lifeless atmosphere
There comes a chill through the door,
A shock to the soul,
It thinks to itself, "Is there more?"
Eventually to find an endless hole.
Yelling, punishment--it never gets through
There would be only one proper thing to do.
Reasoning, understanding, negotiation.
Time restarts; a life anew.
Suddenly the soul awakes
Seizing the day, life becomes different yet same.
Wandering around aimless
A life on the streets-- no place like home,
A soul lacking Love.

Dreams

~Your MB20 dreams. No matter how bizarre...~

I had this really cool dream the other day.So here it goes! I was at my school at night time for some weird reason and I was with a bunch on my friends and as we were all coming outta the bathroom we heard screaming and stuff.I looked inside the gym and there was Matchbox 20 on the stage singing "Push"! We all started freaking out. I asked why they came to our school and my friends are like "That's what they do when they are passing towns" I dunno why they said that it's a dream! But we all ran in the gym and there were NO seats left and Rob saw us and said "Just take a seat right there baby" and he pointed to the chairs up on the stage!! They finished singing and then I woke up cuz my STUPID alarm went off!!!!! It was a awsome dream.Well that's all for now! I love the Long Day Zine.I look foward to every issue. Keep up the good work, bye!

-Angel856@aol.com

Hey all you MB20 lovers! I actually had 2 dreams about Rob! They were kinda weird, though. Anyway, one was at "his house" (although I have no idea what his house looks like) and he was carrying stacks of newspapers up these stairs to put them in this like, screened-in porch. I was standing there next to the stairs with Rob's mom and Rob came over to carry more papers up the stairs. There were other newspapers on the stairs in his way, so I moved them for him. Then here's the weirdest part: his mom said some thing like, "Thank you so much for saving my son's life!". I know-it's strange.

The other dream was at a concert. But it wasn't a normal concert-it was one with all these families and everyone was sitting down nicely and everything. I think the concert was like, a combined one with Third Eye Blind, Matchbox20, and Smash Mouth (I don't even like Smash Mouth...). I was sitting with my mom, dad, bro, sis, and grandparents (don't ask) when I caught a glimpse of Rob practicing in a corner of the stage. Well, I jumped up and ran over there, screaming "ROB! ROB!" He looked down at me and was like, "What, kid?". He was not friendly (proving that the dream was VERY unrealistic :-). OK, I chatted with him for a while then I found Brian. He was not friendly either, but for some reason I told him next time he saw me he HAD to say hi. Later after the concert I was like, laying in a car (?). This car drove past me and this guy that was driving looked just like Brian, only it wasn't. But the guy rolled down the passenger side window and yelled, "Hi Jessie!". I looked in the back window and saw Brian waving at me from the middle seat, squished between 2 other guys. Well, that's basically it-I know they're strange, but hey-at least I dreamed about Matchbox20!
-Matchstik2@aol.com

Well, I'll start out by explaining that I have ridden horses since I was three years old, so it came as no surprize that I was having a horse dream. I was at the Nationals, riding one of my horses, Secret. I had a perfect round, and right behind me, was PAUL riding a horse named "Clockwork Orange." Maybe thats because of his orange hair in the 3am vid? But anyway he also had a perfect round. So I was National Champion and PAUL was National Reserve Champion. When we rode out to get out ribbons, ADAM and ROB were the judges! Brian was sitting in the front row, screaming for both me and Paul. I have no idea what happened to Kyle. Anyway, it was a good dream :)
-Wallbox20@aol.com

I had a dream with Matchbox 20 in it. Well, not all the guys were in it, but Adam and Kyle were. I had it a while ago, when I first heared Matchbox 20, but I already had decided that they were my favorite band. It was a very strange dream...alot of stuff happened before they came into it, and I don't remember it all. But this is what I do remember. I was with a bunch of my friends. We were all just hanging out in this big auditorium. We were watching some show, and it was really bad. This woman was singing and she had a horrible voice, and someone was playing the piano for her and they were really bad at it. My friends and I got up to leave when I caught a glimpse of Adam stading right by the piano. Then Kyle ran across the stage. I started to freak out, and I said to my friends, "Hey guys! We gotta stay! It looks like Matchbox 20 might be performing!" So we all sat down again. Then the woman with the horrible voice said, "Everyone, we have a special treat for you...Matchbox 20!!" My friends and I started cheering and the curtain on the stage was starting to open, and then...I woke up. I was very upset that I didn't get to see them all perform...but it was still a good dream. It was better than nothing! :)

My friend had a dream with Matchbox 20 too. Hers was better than mine-they were all in it! It's not fair! Well, anyway, here's her dream. I was lucky enough to be in it! Well, my friend and Matchbox 20 and I were explorers in Antarctica or something. We were all riding on a dog sled and we came up to a cave. We all walked in and saw that it had two floors. My friend and I and Paul and Adam decided to check out the bottom floor and Rob, Kyle and Brian all looked upstairs. So we are all just looking around when Rob came falling through the ceiling! We all ran over to him and said "Are you OK?" and he said in a kind of pissed off way "Well, I didn't have any batteries for the remote control, so I couldn't control the koosh balls, and that's why I had to eat my shirt!!" So then I said "OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU!!!" and I gave him a big hug. My friend found this very funny and she burst out laughing. Then we left the cave and came to a forest and there was a T-Rex and Paul screamed "Hey look!! A T-Rex!!!!!! How cool is that? WHOA!!!!!" Then he jumped on it's tail and it flung him against a wall. We all screamed "PAUL!!! ARE YOU OK????????????" and he said "Sure, why wouldn't I
be?" Then we all fell down a waterfall and my friend...woke up!
Kinda strange, huh? =)

You asked a while ago for anybody who had a dream with the guys in it to share it with the 'Zine so here it goes. My friend and I were on the way back from a Matchbox concert and we saw the tourbus pull into Giant so we followed it. When we got inside we saw my aunt who works there to give us some paper so we could get their autographs. We found Rob in the Bulk Foods section and I asked for his autograph. He said "of course" and he started to sign my paper then the paper turned into a cookie and he kept trying to sign it then he said "it won't fit" so I said "can you hold on a sec I'll get something else?" he said "yeah" and I found someone who worked at Giant and asked for more paper but she said "I only give paper to important people". So I went back and told Rob what she said and he said "Man, That's f**ked up". Then we started talking and out of the blue he was singing and Kyle, Adam, and Brian were playing their guitars and Paul was playing his drums. Then I woke up. The End.
-LoveMB20@aol.com

Okay, this was a really wierd dream. First, I was working at McDonalds, making patties and throwing them on a counter. Then, it was closing time, and everyone started to leave and get changed. They came back into the main part of the building, but they were dressed up, like in costumes. Lots of them were dressed like Cats, and some of them were wearing top hat and tails. It was my first day and I was like "They must do this every night". So then I went into this big living room and there were a whole bunch of people from my school there. Then, I looked at the T.V. and there was a Matchbox video on, and I started freaking out. I sat in the middle of the floor beside my friend Jenn (who is also a Mb20 fan) and started going "Oh my God!!! It's Matchbox!! What song is this? I've never heard this song!!! This song isn't on the album!!" It was really wierd. I kinda made up a Matchbox song and video in my head.
Parts of the video looked like Push, when they are in the alley, but it was in brighter colours. Then it looked like Rob was in front of a supermarket. The song kinda sounded like "Tired", but a little slower. Anyways, that's my Matchbox dream, even though all of it wasn't about Matchbox, I thought I'd let you know. Also, I'll be e-mailing you again soon with a transcription of a short interview with Rob that was on the radio recently.
Okay bye,

Matchbox20 is awesome...you know something really weird though? In December, I was wathcing Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion on Pay Per View, I watched it so many times, but I only liked the end. Has anyone seen it? Well, Romy and Michelle and this dude do a weird dance thing to "Time After Time", and then after they get on a helicopter and it's this song called "heaven is a place on earth" or
something. I wasn't sure of both song titles, but I liked them! :o)
And then what's so weird....I was reading through archives of the Long Day Zine and I saw some stuff about how MB20 were singing that song...I didn't know who it was by, and then I saw these commercials on Much Music about "Retro Eighties" music or something and it included "Time After Time" and that song by Sinead O'Connor where
she's crying in the video. It's so weird...I'm weird....anyways, just though I'd share. And one more thing, on the Romy and Michelle thing, it sounded like a man AND a woman singing the song, but I could be mistaken. And the other song "Heaven is a Place on Earth" I found out is by Belinda Carlise...just thought I'd share.

I found a Matchbox 20 poster at Disc Jockey Music Store. On the VH-1 Special "And the Nominees Are....," in the bit on best rock/pop vocal by a group, they show a little of MB20. They show a second of concert footage and then Rob talks about songwriting for two more seconds. It's pretty cool. Then don't forget to tell people to watch the Grammy preshow Feb.25 6pm est and post show 11pm est, because they may talk to MB20. You never know.

I don't know, it seems like ever since Rob Thomas got his new girlfriend, it's like he's less...well... into the fans and stuff. I heard some experiences from people, and it like he's not that...I don't know...affectionate or something to the peoples. Dunno, it's just what I feel.

I absoloutly love Matchbox20...They are awesome..... I just recently got their album and I think it's great....Rob's lyrics are amazing and they make sense to me....they are lyrics that I can really relate to....They have a unique style to them....that I just love, and many other artists do not possess.

~Words straight from their mouths~

I was listening to the radio interview Paul did on 107.9 The End on October 24th and I thought some of these quotes were cute:
"I'm totally devoid of any creativity..."
"If I don't massage Rob's feet after a show I'm fired..."(jokingly!!)
"Nothing makes you feel energized like the word SPOON..."
-Laura
Velvet2440@aol.com

Today Brian did an interview on AOL Keyword: Live...he's a trip! He was answering questions and the ones he didn't have an answer for he would say things like "I don't know, but can I buy you dinner?" or " I couldn't comfirm that, but what about a big hug?" It's true when they say, he's the goofiest. He's a sweetie. He left saying, "For real..the whole group loves you all. If it wasn't for you guys..we wouldn't have anything to do. I'm truly happy with the fans."
(I'm trying to get the quotes right on the mark - they are almost correct, but not totally)

This is from TV Guide, the issue that starts with February 14. There is short article on the outfits worn at the AMAs. It says, (p. 8) ".... Matchbox 20's Paul Doucette went daring in a gauze sarong. ' This is the first time I've worn a skirt,' he said. ' It's pretty comfortable, but as a drummer I couldn't play in it because I can't separate my legs.' "
-sheila_77@hotmail.com, violet_femme@hotmail.com and Jujubes585@aol.com all sent in this hilarious qoute

Rob introduced "Back2Good" by saying "This song is about when you f*ck up so much and you start to get good at it." And he introduced "Shame" by saying "..I was crazy in love with this girl and she was with someone else but I knew he was all wrong for her." And, he introduced "Damn" with "..when you *really* wanna get laid."

~Answers to all your Matchbox 20 questions~

-Answered by Ali, LuvMB203EB@aol.com

1. Well I don't know if this is the section to mention this, but ever since I've followed Matchbox 20 I have noticed the fingernails. I find this very cool. If there is anything that I am NOT, it's a follower, but I really am considering painting my nails. I am a guy, and most of the people that I've mentioned it to, think I am some kind of freak, but I know that my personality and attitude will not change. So I was just wondering what eveyone else thinks about that. I don't think it has anything to do with finding my "feminine" side, because I don't know that I have one...just thought I'd see what you all think...if you think about it at all.
-Jimbeau@ameritech.net

A.
Painting your nails? Go for it! There is nothing any where that says that you are a female for painting your nails. Personally I like guys with painted nails, but it has to look good on them...and I paint my friends all the time and he is a guy. So I say, go buy some Candy Man and paint em! -Ali

2. Does anyone know what kind of cologne Rob wears? I'm dying to know! E-mail me at

A.None of us have any clue so if you any of you do go ahead and email her!

3. Does anybody know their birthdays, or like stuff that they really like.....either things from their fans or just stuff in general.
-libby0@hotmail.com

A. Ahh ::sigh:: let's reminisce back to our old Zine issues :) Checkout our website at:
Http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/9376/main.html and go under Zines and go to our first issue of the Zine and look at our section about getting to know Matchbox20.

4. Where can I find some rad matchbox 20 shirts?
-Qeencasper@aol.com

A.1. At a concert 2. Send some money to a friend who is going to one to buy you a shirt 3. www.cdnow.com---They have a shirt I think 4. Also checkout your local music store

5. How can I get back stage at a concert? It seems like there are a lot of people that get back stage, and I thought maybe there was a trick to it, either that or there are some incredibly lucky people out there!
Thanks,
-Nikki

A. Connections seem to be the way that most people get backstage, but getting backstage isn't the best way to meet them all the time...if you wait outside by the buses before or after a show you are sure to meet at least one of the guys. So try that out!
