We did it though and I personally am proud of ourselves! hehe : ) Anyways - I (Meera) am leaving this summer to go be a counselor at camp, therefore I wont have any internet access. The Zine will still be going on, but Ali and Michelle have decided to just do one big issue over the summer instead of 2, because i'm sure they will be busy doing things over the summer too. Anyways - I hope this doesn't cause any inconvience for anyone... you're just gonna have to wait a *little* bit longer for your Zine! Well, Have a GREAT Summer and don't get into trouble! Meera: How does it feel having your son being so famous? Jacque: At first, I was so excited and thrilled that I ran around telling everyone about MB20's first video "Push" (well, that's actually their second video, but "Long Day" never received much acclaim). I'm sure I started boring people to death telling them about the Dave Letterman Show, Jay Leno Show, etc; but now then after all this time has passed; I see that there are drawbacks about being famous. Now, Kyle and the boys are so busy with their daily tour regimen that I hardly ever get to see him. Then when I do see him, like last Friday at the June 5 Louisville Show; it's pretty sad for me because I had to share him with about 25 other people before and after the show. So, actually now I'm just anxiously waiting for a few days alone with him and my immediate family in July. Another example, which really bothered Kyle was when he came home during the Christmas holidays, he came to one of Alex's basketball games. But someone there recognized him, and then lots of kids were surrounding him asking for his autograph and he said he was really mad that he didn't get to watch Alex's game. Meera: Did you ever think he would make it this big? Jacque: Well, I always thought he would make it in the music business, but I really didn't expect him to be this far along the road to success this fast. Meera: Do you like Matchbox 20's music? Jacque: Yes, I really, REEAALLLLY love it. I'm not just saying that either because I find all the songs so deep and meaningful. And, I've always prided myself in staying up on all the current rock music, even though I'm 50. In fact, I don't like listening to the old hits very often anymore. Instead, I just like all the new stuff. Meera: What do you think of Rob, Adam, Paul, and Brian? Jacque: Those guys are terrific. Every time I see them they treat me like I'm special and they each give me hugs and always have something nice to say. They are all genuinely nice boys. Meera: Have you ever seen any of the girls who are in love with your son? What do you think of that? Jacque: Yes, as a matter of fact I have. It seems like there are several gals that keep showing up at many, many of the shows, and of course they show their admiration with their smiles and a little bit of flirting. But, I just hope they all realize that Kyle and the boys are sure glad everyone likes their music as much as they do, but they do all have private lives and private girl friends. (Sorry.) Meera: Have you ever been with Kyle and someone has noticed who he was? What was that like? Jacque: Yes, after the Akron show we were quietly walking out of the theatre through a back entrance with a security guy, and Kyle was trying to double back to the tour bus with his hat down without getting noticed. But, someone saw him off in the distance and said, "Is that you Kyle?" Well, he looked up and that's all it took; several of the girls started running toward him. He did take some time to write autographs then, but he then excused himself so he could get in the bus and visit with his family. Meera: How often do you get to see Kyle? He's been out touring for over a year now and I'm sure you miss him. Jacque: Yes, I really do miss him and I have missed him ever since he left for college the September after he graduated from high school in 1994. It's always kind of sad when our kids leave home. In some ways, I wish he were still a kid and living at home, but then on the other hand I'm so proud of him for becoming this great artist who enjoys his work. I only get to see Kyle about once every 3 months. Obviously, I wish it were a lot more. Meera: What do you think of Kyle's life out on the road? Jacque: Well, I'm very worried about how his health is holding up. I keep thinking things like . . . I bet he's not eating enough and not eating the right kinds of food and not getting enough sleep. I'm just like every other worry wart mother. But, then when I see him looking so well on my concert visits; I realize that he must be eating pretty good meals since he looks healthy. He is 22 yrs. old and I have to realize that he will try to make mostly good decisions. Meera: Any strange things Kyle did as a child that you would like to share with us? Any funny stories? Jacque: Well, once Kyle hit the age of 15 or 16 he was always so busy with his guitar playing and music that he didn't take a whole lot of time for sitting down at the table and eating normal dinners. Instead, he would frequently make himself a peanut butter and banana sandwich right after school or the other food item he liked so well was microwaved pizza rolls. Now, as far as funny stories, I guess one of the funniest (or not so funny depending on from whose standpoint), but one time when he was about 14 or 15, I checked in his room during the middle of the night and discovered that he and a friend had snuck out the window and jumped off the roof and it was probably about 4 in the morning. So, we had to try to track him and his friend down. And, basically, it wasn't an easy task, so we just had to watch for him at about 6 a.m. when he was trying to sneak back in. (I guess he was going through the kind of strange "teenage turmoil" part of his life.) Of course, he wasn't thrilled to get caught and to be grounded for his mischieviousness. Meera: Are your friends or people recognizing you more, now that your son is famous? Jacque: Yes, in a way because I get lots of requests from people all over, for backstage passes and lots of people give me pictures or c.d. covers that they want me to get autographed. Meera: Is there anything else you'd like to tell us? Jacque: Yes, thanks, thanks, thanks to all you wonderful fans for being so supportive of the Matchbox 20 guys. Also, remember to give some extra applause to Joey Huffman, the keyboardist who joined them in January of this year. He is really good and I think he adds such a neat dimension to their songs. Keep coming to their concerts because they LOVE performing for you. :) :) :) We'd like to Thank Jacque, once again for doing the interview for us! THANKS!!! : ) ================================ *It's Better Than Nothing* Merchandise ================================ ~Find out what's out now and how to get it~ In the last issue, we talked about PhotoWorld and how you can order pics from there. Drummer Paul Douchette says that critics who complain about the Florida band's music and insist they won't stand the test of time are actually criticizing the millions who bought their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You. "We don't get offended when people don't like us, but when people put us down, you're putting down the fans of that band, and that kinda irritates me," says Douchette. "[Critics say] because you bought our record, you have no musical taste, and that's wrong," he adds. Despite the inevitable backlash to their success, Douchette envisions a bright future for the band. "We want to be around for as long as U2, as long as REM...we want to have that sort of career." I love this article...hope you enjoy reading it too! ~Charli CNLuvsMB20@aol.com ================================ *It's Nothing It's So Normal toYou* Reviews (CD, vid, TV performance, etc.) ================================ ~How they rate to you~ "Real World" was on 12 Angry viewers on May 26. They got a 30 out of 60. They lost to Will Smith's new song "Just the Two of Us" which got like a 54. The other video was from Cleopatra "Cleopatra". They also got a 30. One girl on there was like "I don't know who Matchbox 20 is, but I don't like them, the song, or the video, I give it a 1." Most of the viewers didn't like the theme. I don't think most acutally got it, but if you listen to the lyrics I think it all falls into place. Even Ananda (spelling?) said she liked "3 AM" but wasn't too crazy for this one. I was dissapointed that they didn't get more than 30 and got the same as Cleopatra (who sucked). But that's 12 Angry viewers for those that missed it. - Lindsey - FERPOOH@aol.com ================================ *If You’ve Never Heard The Silence* Poll #6 ================================ ~Your opinions concerning Matchbox 20~ ~Compiled by Michelle~ 1. I went to a matchbox 20 concert on May 27th at the Mullins Center in Amherst, MA. It was definitely a great show!! We had general admission seats but some how I managed to get up to the first row. I mean if I tried hard enough I could have reached out and touched Rob. It was excellent. They opened up with Busted and Argue. They played Tired, High, and they even played Dear Joan because some lady in the audience held up a sign that said she would give him 5 bucks if he sang Dear Joan. She even offered him the money, but of course he refused to take it. Before he sang Tired, he said that he was not sure that too many people would know this song cause it was only on an import or something. Well I have that import and Tabithas Secred so when he started singing, I sang along with him and he saw me singing and smiled at me and nodded his head and looked at me like the rest of the song. It was so awesome!! And me and my friend made shirts again and threw them at him and he smiled and said "ah shit!! Thanks a lot!!" All right thats it!! I am just praying that they will come around here again soon!! - Jamie4420@aol.com I saw matchbox 20 two times in concert, but I had really bad seats. Although I couldn't really see that well and had to bring binoculars to help me out, it was still awesome! Matchbox 20 rules and those two nights, November 14 (Pookie's b-day!) and March 21, were the best two nights of my life. I couldn't believe how much emotion Rob puts into his performance. I was so excited and I couldn't believe how good they were. I know this review is short and not so great, but I don't wanna bore you with every little thought that ran through my mind. Matchbox 20 forever, baby! ~*Nicole*~ - NicTwenty@aol.com Here's my detailed concert experience::: The concert was on friday, in NY, and i couldnt sleep at all on thurs night. We had to fly to NY on Thrusday morning, because I'm from California. i woke up extremely early on fri, and my parents ended up wanting to go out. We leave our hotel, and lo and behold, there's a tour bus parked next to the civic center where the concert is. unfortunaly, no one's there. my parents drag me around the city, expecting me to enjoy the siteseeing. hell no, i didnt eat or drink the entire day. the concert starts at 8, but the doors open at 6;30, so i made my parents go back to the hotel at 300. to get ready and shower and stuff. i make my dad walk around the concert place with me. i walk around, hoping to get a glimpse of them,, but no such luck. we get inline around 5;00 ish, and we're about five groups of people from the front. i make some friends, hang around, chatting until finally they open the doors at 700. uhh, the suspense. so me, my parents, my new friends all rush to the front and i end up about 6 people over from middle, right in the front row, about right in front of kyle me and this girl peek around, and we see standing backstage, Paul, so we wave, and he waves back. thats my first interaction with the band. then, the opeing act starts. its Rebekah, dont ask who she is, i have no idea. but she was good. i couldnt keep my eyes off of backstage. of course, a curly haired guy in a big jacket walks by. hmm, i wonder who that is. of course, i'm dying by then(im a ROB fan, no doubt) finally, the opening act ends at 830, and the boys come on around 945. such suspense!! they open with busted and its the raddest concert. it went by so fast, and i unfortuanty have this big blur about the entire set. but Rob played his elvis guitar and sang hang and it was great. i could swear i got eye contact with kyle and adam at least twice. After the show, the crew throws out pauls drumsticks and kyle's guitar picks. guess who catches a pick? me, of course. was so thrilled. i'd lost my parents by then, so i returned to our hotel right next door to find them, then bought a hat, then went around back to get to the good stuff the guards line us up and tell us the band will be out in a few minutes. Finally, after about 45 minutes, GOD himself walks out first. i almost died on the spot. he was wearing a mickey mouse hat, an Atlantic braves shirt, and black pants with silver buttons on the side. so, people are gathered around rob, and its finally my turn. he looks at me, and its love!!! i ask him to sign my cd, then my friends, my dad takes a pic, we hug, its all good. then, my mom reminds me that i bought a pack of Camel cigs for him. i search my bag and finally pull it out for him. he gets all mushy and grabs me into this bear hug, with both arms wrapped around me. this is like as good as it gets. my dad takes a pictures and i just cant stop smiling. finally, my time with rob is over. :( thats okay though, cuz Paul has just came out. so then i go over to paul, and I'm like, "you're great." he says, no, you are. then i say,"you're greater," and he tells me i'm much great and that you cant get better than that so he signs my CD," you're great! Paul." we get a pic then its Kyle's turn. now, in my opinion,. he was standing there, in his leather coat, like he was mr. cool. which he was, i told him i was from CA and he was in shock. he even shook my dads hand. we told him about my brother kyle and he was really curious, cuz they both sing and play guitar and stuff. i wish i'd brought my brother's demo tape, but oh well. we take a picture then move on now, its Adams turn. he impressed me the most, maybe even more than ROb. i told him i was from CA and he said, "hold on." he disappears for a moment, and then comes back, saying," where's ami, where'd she go." he'd already singed my CD and taken a picture so i was kinda standing off to the side. so i go over to him, and he slips his hand in his pocket and i cant figure out what he's doing he pulls out his hand, goes to grab my hand, and when i pull away, there's a guitar pick in my hand!!! he personally gave me one. he felt so honored that we came from CA that he gave me a pick he was so sweet. i never met brian.my mom said she saw some guy running around, jumping in and out of the tour bus then running back to the building. i figure that must have been him before we go, i decide to say goodbye to rob. i write him this quick little note saying how much he means to me, blah, blah, then give it to him and get one last hug. then we left. It was the best night of my life. Ami-----luvermb20@aol.com Well, I have to say that the mb20 concert I attended last month was the best concert I've ever been to. Sadly though, Rob told us that it was the end of an era. They will never preform Time After Time again :( But I do have a great quote about Back 2 good. Rob said: "This song's not about me. I'm okay, you're okay. I'm a stable mother-f*cker." - Liz - lizengelbret@hotmail.com My name is Dylan Press, Im Brain Yales cousin. So i find out just about everything that is going on with mb20. For your info, I saw them play last night in Amherst Mass, it was a great show as always. They played some different stuff. The song off the Fleetwood Mac album and two much older songs from when they where called Tabithas Secret. A girl in the crowd was holding up a sign, that said play Dear Joan. Rob said no at first but gave in and played it. It was great. For Rob's solo he played a very old song called High, that was also a nice surprise.Oh and i almost forgot they played You can't always get what you want- by the Stones. After the show i went back stage and hung out with them like i always do. I will see them again when they come back to my area in August, can't wait. - Dylan Press
