"Wow, it's about time you girls got home," Brian chuckled as Angel, BJ, Ashley, Tammy, and I walked into the house.
"Hi honey!" I said brightly.
"Where's Nick?" BJ asked sitting down on the couch.
"Upstairs, he went to the bathroom," Brian replied.
"I am so tired," Ashley whined.
"What's wrong? Dont like shopping?" Brian teased.
"Not with my sister!" she exclaimed.
"I wasnt too bad, was I?" I asked looking at the other three.
"Im 12 years old with a short attention span, dont ask me," Angel answered.
I turned to BJ, "I love to shop."
"Tammy?" I asked.
"Huh?" she asked, pretending to not know the question. I sighed and sat on the couch next to BJ and Brian.
Brian pulled me into his arms and kissed my forehead.
"Where's Hayley?" I asked looking up at him.
"Sleeping, she fell asleep a little bit before you got home. She's up in her room," he replied.
"Im gonna go see her," I said rushing up to Hayley's room. On my way up, I ran into Nick.
"Hey Nick!" I exclaimed.
"Hey MacKenzie, find any dresses?" Nick asked.
"For everyone but myself," I laughed.
"That's good," he smiled and walked downstairs. I went into Hayley's room and sat down on the edge of her bed and looked down at her. She looked so beautiful. I leaned down and kissed her cheek softly.
"Mommy?" she said, her eyes fluttering open. I smiled at her.
"Hey sweetie," I said smiling.
"She sat up and crawled into my lap.
"How was your day?" I asked.
"Good," she told me.
"That's good, did you have fun with Brian?" I asked.
She nodded and began to fall asleep again.
"I love you Hayley," I whispered.
"Me!" she giggled softly as she began to fall asleep. I smiled and held her close to me.
When she fell back asleep, I laid her down and covered her up with her blankets. I walked downstairs and the only one in the house was Brian.
"Everyone leave already?" I asked sitting next to him.
"Yeah, everyone was tired," he laughed.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"So, what do the dresses look like?" he asked.
"Well, Ashley's is baby blue and everyone elses is going to be lavender, but the same design as Ashley's. I dont know how to explain what they look like, you'll have to see them later," I smiled at him. Just then, the phone next to me rang.
"Hello?"Brian answered it.
"Just one moment," he said and handed me the phone.
"Hello?" I asked into the phone.
"MacKenzie?" it was my mother. I havent talked to my mother in almost three years. She wanted me out of the house when I finally told her I was pregnant and I havent talked to her or my father since. My sister has always had "issues" with them before, so she didnt mind at all when I asked her if I could move in with her.
"Mom?" I asked confused, how would she get this number?
"Yeah, honey, look, I wanted to tell you that I heard today that Billy died, are you ok?" she asked.
"How'd you get this number?" I spat.
"I called your sister," she told me.
"Without bitching her out?" I asked, angry.
"Look, MacKenzie, I didnt call to fight. I just wanted to know if you were ok?" she asked.
"Well, if you must know, I wasnt with Billy," I growled.
"But, I thought..."
"Well, you thought wrong. He abandoned me, just like you and Dad did," I said, anger just boiling inside of me.
"Im so sorry honey," she whispered.
"How's the baby?" she asked softly.
"Hayley. Her name is Hayley," I told her.
"Well, how is Hayley?" she asked.
"Fine," I answered simply.
"What about you, how have you been?" she asked.
"Fine," I answered.
"Look, MacKenzie, what do you think about you and me getting together for lunch tomorrow or something," she suggested.
"Oh, now you have the heart to talk to me and care about me, now that Im not living off you and Dad," I spat. I looked at Brian who was looking at me confused.
"MacKenzie, please," she begged.
"Fine," I answered.
"How about we meet at the food court in the mall tomorrow around noon," she suggested.
"I guess," I mumbled. When I hung up the phone and looked at Brian.
"You ok?" he asked.
"Yeah, just she frustrates me," I sighed and leaned my head on his shoulder.
*The Next Day At Lunch*
"Thank you for coming Brian," I said squeezing his hand.
"It's no problem," he said smiling down at me.
He was holding Hayley with his other free arm.
"Is she too heavy? You can put her down," I told him.
"She's fine," Brian smiled.
When we walked into the mall, I immediatly spotted my mother, sitting at a table.
"She's right there," I said pointing.
"Well, come on," he said, starting to walk to her.
When we got to the table, my mother stood up.
"MacKenzie!" she exclaimed, pulling me into a hug.
"Hi," I mumbled.
"Is this Hayley?" she asked looking at her.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Hi Hayley. Im your Grandma," she said smiling.
"Mahma?" she asked looking confused. I giggled at her.
"Who's this?" my mother asked looking at Brian.
"Hi ma'am, Im Brian," Brian said, his thick southern accent, obviously charming my mother the way it had charmed me. I smiled at him.
"Brian's my fiance," I told my mother.
"Fiance?" she asked.
"Yeah," I answered.
"Wow, so much happens," she sighed.
By then, we had all taken seats at the table.
"So, when do you two plan on getting married?" my mother asked.
"July 4," Brian replied, smiling.
"Wow, only a month or so away," she smiled.
"How long have you two known each other?" was her next question. I laughed, "about four or five months."
Her eyes grew wide, "So soon to get married?"
"We dont need time keeping us from getting married," Brian told her, smiling.
"How charming," she replied. I rolled my eyes.
"Well, I hope Im invited," she said looking at me. I looked at her, confused.
"Why are you being nice all of the sudden?" I questioned.
"I brougt you here to deliver some news," she whispered looking at her hands.
"What?" I asked.
"Your father passed away last week," she sighed.
"How?" I asked, completely emotionless.
"Um, heart attack," she whispered.
"Im sorry," I said, a little upset. I mean, the man hated me for the past three years, but then again, he was my father.
"Why is everyone dying?" I mumbled.
I looked at Brian, he was smiling down at Hayley.
"Well, I am doing well, knowing he is in good hands with the Lord above," she told me.
"Yeah," I smiled.
"Well, I hope you choose to allow me to be apart of your wedding celebration," she said forcing a smile on her face.
"Well, Im sure we can work something out," I replied.
"Yes, well..."
"I think we need to go Brian. Im not feeling so well," I said standing up. It was the truth too, I wasnt feeling well. I had a funny feeling in my stomach.
"You ok?" Brian asked noticing my discomfort.
"Yeah, I just need to go home," I said.
"Um, ok. Well, can I give you a call tonight?" my mother asked standing up.
"Uh, I guess," I replied.
"You ok baby?" Brian asked, still concerned.
"Yeah, Im fine," I sighed.
"I'll see you later, Mom ," I said and walked away. I was very ready to go home. Not that I didnt enjoy spending quality time with my mother, but I really wasnt feeling well...
*At Home*
"Do you wanna lay down?" Brian asked soothingly.
"Why dont we all watch a movie?" I asked.
"Ok, Hayley what do you want to..."
"Dont ask her. We'll get stuck watching B-L-U-E," I said smiling.
"Ok, then, what movie do you want to watch?" Brian asked looking at me.
"I dont care. Just grab a movie. Me and Hayley will go upstairs and crawl into bed," I replied. I wanted to watch a movie in Brian and mine's room, that way I could lay down, comfortably. Hayley and I walked upstairs and we got ready to take a nap and crawled into bed.
It wasnt long before Brian came in the room, 'The Sixth Sense' in hand.
I smiled at him. He was so wonderful to me. I couldnt ask for anything better...
