Chapter Six

"Thank you for taking me out tonight, Brian," I said smiling up at him. It was 11:30 and he was leaving. I was so tired, I could just lay down right in my driveway and fall asleep. We were standing by his car.

"I'll stop by tomorrow, at the diner. If you want me to," he said looking into my eyes.

"Of course I want you too," I answered. He smiled and lifted my chin with his finger and softly pressed his lips to mine.

"I know we just met and we're just getting to know each other. But, I really like you MacKenzie. You're the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on," he told me.

"Do you always flatter the girls with your words?" I asked, only half-joking.

"Usually Im really shy. Me asking you out is something very unusual for me," he confessed.

"Really?" I asked.

"Yeah, but Im glad I had the courage to ask you," he told me.

"Im glad you did too," I replied.

"Get some sleep. I'll see you tomorrow," he told me.

"Ok," I nodded.

He gave me one last kiss and within minutes he was gone. I sighed and turned to walk back inside.

"Is that why you wont let me see Hayley?" I heard a man whisper from behind me. My heart started pounding. I turned around and saw Billy leaning against my truck.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"What was he doing here?" he asked.

"None of your business, now get the hell away from here," I told him.

"MacKenzie, I just want to see Hayley," he told me.

"Billy, it's 11:30 at night. I dont think so," I rolled my eyes. I walked inside and locked the door. I leaned up against it and let out a breath of air. I walked back to the bedroom and crawled into bed with Hayley.

"Night night baby," I said kissing her cheek and falling asleep.

*The Next Afternoon*

"How'd last night go?" Tammy asked coming up to me.

"Oh, he loved Hayley," I smiled.

"So, he's not going anywhere?" she asked.

"I hope not," I smiled and then blushed.

"It's about time you're getting something well deserved," she smiled.

"Hey, Ive had something well deserved for the past two and a half years," I smiled.

"Yeah, but you never know. This guy might be the one to complete the picture," she nodded.

"Ive known him only, what? A week?" I asked.

"Something like that," she nodded.

"How can you be so sure?"

"Honey, the moment I laid eyes on my husband, I knew I was going to marry him one day. It's been 25 wonderful years," she told me.

"Where'd you meet him?" I asked.

"Right here in this very diner," she told me.

"How old is this place?" I asked shocked.

"Honey, this place has been open since 1955," she smiled.

"Wow," I sighed.

"Have you kissed him yet?" she asked.

"Um, yeah," I blushed.

"He'd be good to you," she told me.

"You think so?" I asked.

"Better than anyone has ever been," she smiled.

I smiled and looked at the front of the diner, where someone had just walked in.

"Looks like he's here," I said looking at Tammy.

"Go on, you want the afternoon off?" she asked.

"I really cant afford to do that," I told her.

"The only thing you'll miss out on is tips and it's not even busy," she told me.

"You're going to keep me on the clock?" I asked.

"Sure sweetie," she smiled.

"Thank you!" I exclaimed. I walked to the front, where Brian was patiently standing.

"Hey," I smiled.

"Hey!" he said, not noticing I had walked up.

"I got the afternoon off," I told him.

"Great, do you want to do something?" he asked.

"Um, Hayley," I reminded him.

"It's ok. We'll go to the zoo or something," he suggested.

I smiled, "Ok."

We walked out and he followed me to the house. When I walked in, Hayley was eating a hot dog.

"Hey Hayley!" I exclaimed.

"Hi Mommy," she waved.

"Home so early?" Ashley asked.

"Yeah, Tammy gave me the afternoon and I figured it would be perfect oppurtunity to take Hayley to the zoo," I replied.

"Oh, hi, I dont believe we've met," Ashley said noticing Brian.

"Hi, Im Brian," he held out his hand.

"Ashley, MacKenzie's sister," she told him.

"Nice to meet you," he smiled.

"I like your accent," she told him.

"Thanks," he said shyly.

"Wanna go to the zoo Hay Hay?" I asked.

"Yeah!" she said jumping down from her seat and running to the room.

*At the Zoo*

Hayley, Brian, and I walked around the entire park and we were now resting at a bench across from the elephants.

"They smell so pretty," I joked.

"I think I have this scent in cologne," he joked back.

"Mmmm, my favorite," I laughed.

"MacKenzie!" I heard someone said, a man. A very unwanted man. How the hell does he always end up where I am.

"Hayley!" I yelled, as she ran off towards the bar to be closer to the elephants. I ran up to her and picked her up.

"Come on Brian, please," I said looking down at him.

"Isnt that the guy from..."

"Yes, please, he cant see Hayley," I begged.

"Here, I'll take Hayley," he said holding out his arms. Hayley freely went into them.

"MacKenzie!" Billy yelled grabbing my arm and turning me around.

I was staring into his black eyes.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him.

"Billy, who are you talking to?" asked a young woman, probably a year or two older than me. She was carrying a baby, probably about 7 months old.

"MacKenzie, who is he?" Billy asked looking at Brian, who looked a little uncomfortable. I glanced at Brian and smiled slightly. I got my arm loose from Billy's grasp and glared at him.

"Who's that?" I asked looking at the woman.

"Im his wife and who are you?" she asked.

"Who's that?" I asked referring to the baby in her arms.

"Our child. Who are you?" she asked again.

"You're baby?" I asked. Billy took a deep breath.

"You wanna fucking see Hayley? You can fucking leave me when Im 4 months pregnant and not give a shit about me or Hayley until recently, but you didnt have a problem marrying her and fucking her up," I told him bitterly. I didnt want to yell, because there were little kids around.

"MacKenzie, it's different," he explained.

"How? Oh, wait, I know. She wasnt 17 years old and vulnerable," I said, tears forming in my eyes.

"What is going on?" she asked.

"You will never see Hayley. Never," I spat and walked off. I walked up to Brian and looked up at him. He wiped away a tear, glanced at Billy, and then looked back down at me.

"Are you ok?" he asked.

"Yeah, Im sorry. I didnt plan on him being here," I said.

"You couldnt help it. Do you want to go?" he asked.

"No, Hayley likes the zoo," I shook my head.

"You sure?" he asked. I nodded and looked down.

He lifted my chin and looked into my eyes.

"He's the one?" he asked.

I nodded and looked away. He gently moved my face so I was looking at him again. He leaned down and gently kissed my lips.

"It's going to be ok," he promised.
