Chapter Eleven

I cringed as I heard my father's voice booming from the next room. I had just arrived home from Nick's house and it was 2:30 in the morning.

"Where the hell were you?!" my father shouted coming up to me.

"Nick's," I said, a little shaky.

"Well, at least you didnt lie," he glared at me.

"Would you like me to? Well, you see, I went to Veronica's house after I felt a little down at dinner with Brad's fascinating and down to earth parents. I knew she'd comfort me in my downer mood. So, we talked for a long while and I fell asleep. I woke up at 2:15 and realized I needed to be home. So, I left," I said and smiled sarcastically.

"You're grounded," he told me.

"From what?!" I yelled, frustrated.

"From your dreams and your activites that you seem to think I enjoy?" I asked.

"Excuse me?" he asked.

"I am living my life the way YOU want me to live it and I dont think it's fair!" I shouted.

"You dont know what you're talking about," he told me.

"Oh really? Then explain to me why Im going to Stanford?" I asked.

"Because it's a good college," he answered.

"No, because that's where YOU want me to go," I said.

"Where else would you want to go?" he asked glaring at me.

"A community college and a local university would've been fine for me," I said.

"No way am I allowing my daughter to go to a community college," he shook his head.

"And why not? Now, let me ask you another question. Who's bright idea was it for me to major in law?" I asked.

"A lawyer makes good money," he defended himself.

"But I hate lawyers! I dont want to be a lawyer," I said, tears forming in my eyes.

"Well, what do you want to be?" he asked.

"I want to be a teacher," I said looking down and almost in a whisper.

"A teacher?" he asked.

"I wanna work with kids," I said looking at him.

"Marissa, I just want you to have a secure future. Im not always going to be here to help you along the way and I want to make sure you're going to be ok," he said, he actually looked sincere.

"Dad, I'll be fine, if Im happy," I said.

"Go to bed. We'll talk in the morning," he whispered and walked off. I walked up to my room.

"Where were you?" Nicole asked walking into my room.

"Hey Nicole. I was at Nick's," I said.

"Aww," she glowed.

"You're glowing," I laughed.

"Not as much as you," she winked.

I laughed, "Yeah, well. I think I finally got through to my dad about letting me have my own life," I whispered.

"Yeah, I know. I heard. You guys were being kinda loud," she smiled.

"Sorry," I said.

"Hey, it's ok. I kno how important this is to you," she said.

"Thanks Nicole."

"You're welcome. Im going to bed now."

"Good night."

*The Next Afternoon

"Marissa. Ive got lunch with a client and I probably wont get home from the office until late. I dont have time to talk to you about last night. But, we'll talk tomorrow morning," my father said. I was checking my voicemail. Next message.

"Hey baby. It's Nick. Im coming over in twenty mintues. Oh, it's 10:30 right now. I hope you're awake," he said. I could tell he was smiling. I looked at my clock.

"10:37!" I exclaimed. I jumped out of bed, where I had lazyily checked my voice mail on my cell phone. I ran to the bathroom, jumped in the shower and took the quickest shower I ever thought possible.

As I got out it was 10:45.

"Oh jeez!" I sighed and threw on my Blue Gap jeans and a white wife-beater I used as a tank top. I put on my backless sandals, threw my long hair in a clip and just as I was finishing, Nick walked into my bedroom.

"Damn," he said.

"What?" I asked.

"I was hoping you were sleeping," he said, looking suddenly sad.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I wanted to wake you up," he shrugged.

"Why?" I asked again.

"I dont know, it was an excuse to kiss you," he smiled.

I blushed, "You dont need an excuse."

"Well, in that case, c'mere," he said moving closer to me.

Our lips sealed and once again, our tongues met.

"Come on, I want to take you out to breakfast," he said.

"Ok," I agreed.

I hope we're going to Denny's!

I grabbed my cell phone and we walked downstairs. I got my bag on the way out and we left without a word. I climbed into Nick's Durango and we were on our way.

"So, where do you want to go?" he asked.

"I dont care, it's up to you. I eat anywhere," I said smiling.

"Marissa," he whined.

"Denny's," I answered.

"Ok," he said smiling.

"Mind if I stop for gas?" he asked.

"YES!" I whined, but smiled.

"No, I dont mind," I said laughing.

He pulled into a gas station and got out to pump gas. I got out and stood next to him while he pumped.

"Marissa?" I heard a snobby voice ask from the next pump. I turned and sure enough, Veronica was standing there, with her boyfriend, I guess.

"Hey," I said smiling.

"Is that your boyfriend?" she asked looking at Nick.

"Yeah, why?" I asked.

"No reason. Where are you guys going?" she asked.

"Denny's," I answered.

"Denny's?" she asked.

"Yeah, you know. Sometimes, they sell food," I said sarcastically.

"You're going to be seen in Denny's?" she asked.

"What's wrong with Denny's?" I asked annoyed. Personally, I love Denny's.

"Uh, it's so cheap," she shuddered.

"Whatever. Princess," I rolled my eyes and looked at Nick.

Nick didnt say anything the whole time. We finally got in the car, Nick sped off, still no word.

"What's wrong Nick?" I asked.

"Nothing," he mumbled.

"Nick, tell me. Was it Veronica?" I asked.

"She makes me sound like a disease or something," he told me.

"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.

"'Is THAT your boyfriend?'" he mocked her.

"Nick, just ignore her. She's stuck-up and self-centered. You cant expect her to be nice. She thought I was a total loser for like two months because I got my nails done at some salon that only charged 50 bucks," I said looking at him.

He laughed, "No she didnt. Did she?"

"Yep," I nodded.

"Thats kinda expensive," he said, thoughtfully.

"You're telling me," I nodded.

Nick pulled into the Denny's parking lot and parked. We got out and walked into the building hand in hand.

"Two?" the waitress asked.

"Yeah."

"Smoking or non?"

"Non."

"Right this way."

Nick and followed her and were seated. I picked up the menu and started looking at it.

"What are you getting?" Nick asked.

"I dont know. What about you?" I said looking up at him.

"Grand Slam His short blonde hair had fallen in his eyes and he looked so cute.

He looked up, "What?"

"Nothing," I smiled and looked down at my menu.

"Im having a plain omelet," I said and closed the menu.

*After Breakfast*

"So, where to now, my lady?" he asked smiling.

"Um, I dont know. I dont usually do stuff on Sunday, so I dont know what to do," I shrugged.

"Putt Putt Golf!" he exclaimed.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"Come on, it'll be fun!" he begged.

"Ok," I said smiling.

This was going to be good.
