Chapter Twelve

"Nick, give it up, you know Im going to win," I said laughing as Nick concentrated hard on the ball and the hole.

We were on the last hole and I already had him beat, even if he were to make this one, I'd still win. But, it was quite amusing and I loved just watching him.

He gently hit the ball and it went in the hold.

"Yes!" he jumped up, a huge smile on his face.

"I still won," I said to him, smiling.

"That's ok. I let you win," he told me.

"Sure you did," I said laughing.

Just then my cell phone rang. I pulled it out of my bag and looked at the caller i.d. It was home.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Where are you?" my father asked.

"Im with Nick," I replied.

"I thought I told you that you were grounded?" he asked.

"You remembered that?" I asked, shocked.

"Get home." Click.

"Um, Im in trouble," I said hanging up my phone.

"Come on, I'll take you home," he said, sadly.

"Im sorry that my dad's like this Nick," I said as we walked to the Durango.

"It's not your fault. Dont worry about it," he mumbled.

We got into the Durango and Nick began to drive. The whole ride there was silence. It wasnt a comfortable silence either, it was a very uncomfortable silence.

When he pulled into my driveway I asked, "Are you mad at me?"

"No, it's just frustrating that you cant be with me," he answered.

"It's not because of you as a person though Nick. It's because my dad wants me to marry into a traditional money grubbing family of lawyers," I told him.

"It's too soon to say things like that Nick. Who knows, in a month you could hate me," I whispered.

"Have you ever heard the expression to go with your gut feeling?" he asked.

"Yeah," I said confused.

"That's what Im doing," he whispered.

"Really?" I asked.

"Marissa, if we develop a relationship, it could turn out really good. We could spend a lifetime together," he said.

"Nick, you've known me for four days. How can you say that?" I asked.

"I dont know. I mean, I know it sounds weird, but I know I want you to be with me," he said.

"I want to be with you too. We'll work this out and everything will be fine. I promise," I said smiling.

"Yeah," he frowned.

"Bye Nick," I whispered.

"Bye."

I got out of the jeep and walked up to my front door and turned around to see Nick speeding off. I sighed and opened the door and walked in. Sitting in the front room was Brad and his parents. My eyes got wide and my father appeared.

"Marissa. I think you own Brad's parents an apology," he said.

"Yeah, I know," I whispered.

"Go ahead," he persisted.

"Um, Im really sorry about the way I acted yesterday. It was uncalled for and Im sorry to be so rude," I said looking at his parents.

"It's ok. We were looking into wedding reception locations. What do you think is best?" his mother asked.

I looked at her shocked.

"Im going to my room," I growled and stomped off to my room.

"Do you think Brads parents got the point?" Nicole asked coming into my room.

"I guess I didnt succeed in my father laying off of the whole marriage thing," I sighed laying on my bed.

"I dont know what to tell you Marissa," she sighed.

"I dont expect you to say anything, so dont worry," I said smiling.

"Maybe your dad will see how happy Nick makes you and he'll understand," she said hopefully.

"I dont think that's going to happen. Im so afraid Nick's going to get tired of not having a normal relationship that he'll just end it with me. I mean, I dont know. I really like him," I said looking at my ceiling.

"Hey, dont worry about it. He wont give up and you wont marry Brad," Nicole told me.

"Even though I like that, it's going to be hard, you know, convincing Nick to hold on," I said.

"He'll understand, Im sure he will," she assured me.

"I hope so," I smiled.
