Chapter Four

"Oh, hi Brian." I greeted.

"How are you?" he asked.

"Um good. And you?" I answered.

His lovely southern accent replied, "Good thanks."

"Hey Brian, it's not that I mind or anything, but may I ask how you got my phone number?" I asked.

"Yeah, I asked the radio DJ that gave you the tickets for it. I hoped you wouldn't mind."

"No, no, not at all." I said.

"Okay, that's a relief." he began, "I was wondering if maybe you wanted to hang out today. I'll go anywhere you feel like."

I smiled, "Sure."

"Where do you want to go?" Brian asked.

"Anywhere. Surprise me." I responded.

"All right. Where do you live? I'll pick you up in a half hour."

I gave him my address and hurriedly got a little more freshened up. I couldn't believe I was going to go somewhere with him.

I was trying to get over Shawn, and maybe Brian was all I needed. I called Melissa and screamed into the phone.

"We're going out!" I yelled.

"Who?"

"Brian and me!" I shrieked.

"Go Julia!" Melissa shrieked back.

"Well, I can't talk right now. I have to go! Bye Melissa!" I hung up the phone and jumped when the doorbell rang.

I took a deep breath and grabbed my purse and flung open the door. There stood Brian, as gorgeous as ever. He had on yellow Nike shirt, slightly baggy jeans, and white, blue, and yellow Nikes. He handed me a single yellow rose, "Hey."

"Hi." I said, "Thanks for the rose. It's beautiful."

"No problem." he answered.

"Let me go put in some water. Do you want to come in?" I offered.

"Sure." He followed me inside and sat on my couch as I went on a search for a vase to put my flower in. I found one and filled it up and put it on my night stand.

"Ready?" I asked, walking back into the living room. Brian's head snapped up, he was standing by my picture stand (you know the things that are made of wood and they have a bunch of spaces for pictures). All the pictures in there were of Shawn or Shawn and I.

"Boyfriend?" Brian asked, kinda disappointed.

"Ex." I whispered, "We just broke up recently and I haven't had a chance to take those out. I'm not exactly ready to let go yet. Ya know?"

"Yeah, I understand. I know the feeling, believe me." Brian replied.

"Oh, well are you ready?" I asked, I was ready to get away from the situation, it was tense and uncomfortable.

He nodded. We walked out of my house and walked to his blue BMW.

"So, where are we going?" I asked.

"You'll see." he replied.

I was immediately curious and I raised my eyebrows. On our way to our mystery location we talked small talk. About our lives, hobbies, etc. We drove to a wooded area and he parked. He ran around to my side of the car and opened the door for me.

"Thank you, sir." I giggled, stepping out of the car.

"Follow me." he replied. I followed him towards the woods and we began walking.

It was slightly dark and chilly underneath the trees, probably because the sun couldn't poke through the thick layer of branches.

"Where are we going? To grandmother's house?" I asked, stepping over a potential tripper, threatening rock, and slapped away a mosquito.

Brian laughed slightly, "No, just a place where we can talk. Get to know one another."

I sighed and continued walking behind him. Then I realized I was following someone I hardly knew into a dark, secluded, wooded place. What kind of intentions did he have? He seemed innocent enough, but you never know. My stomach felt suddenly queasy and nauseated and my head was racing with terrifying stories I'd heard. Why didn't I remember the saying, "Never talk to strangers."

"Brian?" I called, he was a few steps ahead of me. He seemed like he knew the place pretty well.

"Yeah?" he said, stopping and turning around.

"Can we go back? I don't feel so good." I lied.

Brian walked back to me and stood inches away from me.

"We've come this far, we might as well go. But, if you want, we can go back, or we can rest. Do you want to rest?"

"Um, yeah." I agreed. I sat down on a large rock and Brian sat next to me. His shoulder brushed up against me and I shivered. I was pretty sure it wasn't it in a bad way. But the way I was thinking right now, I wasn't sure.

"This was a bad idea." Brian sighed.

"Why do you say that?" I asked, avoiding eye contact with him.

"We don't know each other hardly at all and I brought you somewhere completely deserted, I didn't even stop to think that maybe you'd be uncomfortable with that. I am so sorry." Brian apologized, "Come on, let's go. Maybe we can go out some other time."

"No, it's okay Brian. How about we go do something else? How can we go some other time if we never get to know each other? I know a great restaurant." I suggested.

"I'm... okay, where's the place at?" Brian asked.

I smiled at him. "It's downtown. It's a simple, quiet cafe though."

"Let's go." Brian said. The two of us began walking towards the car again, this time paced together. I no longer felt threatened by him, I felt comforted by him.
