Chapter One

"Shut up!" I snapped at the ever so annoying Nick Carter.

"Nick, man just leave her alone," AJ said annoyed. I smiled at AJ, but when I looked at Nick I glared.

"Come on, let's get going," Kevin said, just as annoyed.

"Yeah, come on, we're gonna have a good time tonight," AJ said, swinging his arm over my shoulder and resting it there. I smiled up at him.

AJ has been my best friend and love interest for quite a few years now. I know... the reason I havent done anything about it is because he's always going out with another girl and I never get the chance to tell him how I feel. Well... it's been awhile since he's had a girlfriend and I think tonight is the perfect night to tell him how I feel. Of course I was nervous as hell!

Nick had just insulted me, telling me my hips were too big for the dress I was wearing. I didnt care what he said, and I usually tried not to let him get to me, but sometimes it got so hard.

Tonight we were all going out to a banquet at some fancy hotel in downtown Tampa. It was a thing the record company was doing for them. Being AJ's best friend, I am also entitled to be his date for these occassions, that is unless he has a girlfriend, but... he doesnt tonight and that's all that matters, right? Right!

Nick stood at the door with his friend, Amber, everyone was walking out of the house. On my way out I kicked Nick's leg and smiled as he bent over and started rubbing it. No one noticed me kick him, so I kept moving, with AJ's arm around me. We all got into a white limo, all ten of us. Nick and I shot dirty looks at each other the whole way over there.

"So, Micki, what are you up to nowadays?" Kevin asked me, trying to ease the tension that was growing between Nick and I.

"Oh nothing really," I sighed.

"Figures," Nick mumbled. I shot him a look.

"Nick, not tonight," AJ grumbled.

"Where are you working?" Brian asked, ignoring Nick and AJ.

"Im currently working as a waitress in some coffee shop in Tampa," I answered.

I heard Nick snicker and I looked at him and glared.

"And what's wrong with that?" Brian's date, Kirsten asked, annoyed with Nick.

"Nothing," Nick defended himself.

Kirsten and I worked together, she was the one who got me the job. It was just somewhere to have extra cash for college.

Amber, Nick's date was looking around, she looked bored. She always looked bored at these things and I ALMOST pitied Nick for having to spend the evening with such a bitch, but the feeling went away as quickly as it had come.

"Well, um... how's college life?" Howie asked me.

"Good, Im making straight A's in all my classes, I have a lot of free time to study," I answered him.

"Because you dont have a life," Nick remarked.

"Im sorry I dont find sitting around playing video games as exciting as some in here," I glared.

"Ok you two!" AJ said frustrated. I looked at him shocked, AJ never yelled.

"Just shut up," AJ spat looking from me to Nick.

"See what you did?" Nick asked.

"Me?! Every time I say anything you come back with a smart-ass remark, maybe you should grow up," I said back.

Nick was about to say something, but AJ threw him a warning look and he shut up. I sat back in my seat and sulked the whole way to the hotel. This was going to be a horrible night.

"We're here," Kirsten whispered when the limo had stopped. Suddenly the door opened and the boys started getting out, helping their respective date out as well. We walked up a red carpet and into the building. I felt like we were at an awards ceremony because there were so many flashes and everything. This must've been a big deal. When we got into the building it was so glamourous. We walked into a huge room that was decorated with white roses and white tableclothes, everywhere.

I looked up at AJ, who was holding my hand and he looked down at me and smiled weakly. We walked to a table in which were directed to.

Nick and I were seated across from each other. I groaned and looked away.

"Micki, please, tonight be nice," AJ begged, whispering in my ear. I looked at him and frowned, "I'll try."

When dinner was served, the waitor set an interesting plate of food down in front of me.

"Take it back," Nick said, he actually looked concerned.

"Why?" I asked looking to see if there was something in my food.

"She's had enough," Nick told the waitor. I was about to say something, but AJ dropped his fork and got up.

"Amber, would you like to join me? Im going to dance," AJ asked. I looked at him hurt. I didnt say anything. He shook his head and him and Amber walked off. Well thank you Nick, now AJ's pissed at me.

I glared at Nick and pushed my plate away, I didnt even feel like eating anymore.

"Micki, are you ok?" Kirsten asked. She was on the other side of me.

"I dont understand why he has to be so rude all the time," I whispered back.

"Maybe he's flirting," she giggled.

"Yeah, Im so sure of it. Now AJ's pissed at me. I was going to tell him how I felt tonight," I told her.

"Really?!" she squealed. We both looked up at Nick and saw him eating his food, he looked to be sulking.

"Yeah, but I cant now, thanks to Nick," I mumbled.

"Forget him, AJ will be in a good mood eventually. Give him ten minutes," she told me.

"Yeah, I guess," I sighed.

"Or not," she said softly. I looked up at her and saw her looking at something. I followed her gaze and it was on AJ and Amber. They were dancing extremely close and he was whispering in her ear and she was giggling. I felt the tears swell my eyes as I got up from the table.

"Excuse me," I said, fighting back the tears. I rushed to the restroom and looked in the mirror as the tears spilled out of my eyes and down my cheeks, my makeup going with them. I frowned as I tried to clean my face up.

"Hey, are you ok?" Kirsten asked coming into the bathroom.

"I dont even know why Im crying. It's just that Amber, Nick's date, shouldnt be dancing close to AJ like that and giggling at him and eww... thats so gross," I said making a face.

"Aww... you're better than she is. She's got big thighs," Kirsten giggled. I smiled at that.

"Well, I just need to put some makeup on and freshen up, I'll be out in a minute," I told her.

"Ok," she nodded and left the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror and frowned. I wish I had balls, then I would just tell AJ how I felt and get it over with.

I cleaned up my face and put on some fresh makeup and checked myself over. I looked good, at least I think I do. Now, it's time to tear AJ away from Amber.
