Chapter Two

I woke up the next morning, with the sun peaking through the blinds of the motel room. I blinked a few times, allowing my eyes to adjust to the light. I took a deep breath and got out of bed. I needed an early start on job hunting.

I remember getting so upset with AJ last night. I decided not to dwell in my misery and do something about it. I changed into a black skirt that ended right below my knees and a white silk tank top to match. I put on my backless, black platform sandals. I pulled my hair into a clip and put on a little makeup. I grabbed my purse and walked to the front office of the motel.

"Hi, Im going to stay again tonight, I need to pay," I told a different lady.

"Ok..."

It wasnt long before I was walking down the street, in hopes of potential jobs.

"Hey baby," a fairly cute guy winked at me. I was sitting in a tiny run down diner, sipping a soda and looking in a newspaper someone else had left behind.

I looked up at him and smiled weakly and continued with the paper. I circled a waitressing job in the paper.

"Looking for a job?" he asked sitting down next to me.

"Uh huh," I said, trying to ignore him.

"I own a business, that would definitly be interested in your services," he told me smiling. I looked up at him and stared hard at him.

Im not sure what that was supposed to mean.

"Not sex," he said reading my mind.

"What?" I asked, wondering.

"Stripping," he smiled.

"I dont think so," I said shaking my head. I looked past him at someone who had just walked into the diner, it was Ricky, the 'gang' leader from the one AJ was in.

"Shit," I said bringing the paper up to cover my face. After a few moments, I looked to see where he was seated. He had his back facing me at the bar, so I brought the paper down. I looked at the guy who was sitting with me and he had a strange look on his face.

"What?" I snapped.

"Wanna consider it?" he asked.

"No, I dont think so. Number one, Im not that desperate for money and number two, Im pregnant," I told him.

"How old are you?" he questioned.

"Almost 18," I answered.

"Maybe you could work as a secretary for me," he suggested. What was this guy's deal? He wasnt going to give up.

"Why are you so interested in me working for you?" I asked, a little skeptical.

"You're gorgeous and I could probably eventually convince you to strip. I could get a lot of business from you. You'd get so much money..." he said.

"How much is so much?" I questioned, considering the idea.

"Some of those guys tip $50s, a lot," he told me.

"I dont strip," I told him.

"You could be a secretary, for now," he suggested.

"I dont know..." I shook my head.

"Here's my card. If you dont find anything else, call me," he said.

"Ok..." I said. I looked down at the card. Ricky Lopez. I looked back up and he was walking out of the diner.

I put the card carelessly in my purse and continued circling possible jobs. When I was done with my soda, I payed and began my journey to find job. The first place I went was a tiny restuarant.

"Im here about the job..." I told the manager.

"Sorry, someone has already filled the position," he said.

"You dont have any more?" I asked irritated.

"No," he said.

"Ok, fine," I sighed and continued on. The next stop was a printing company, close to my old apartment.

"We dont hire anyone under 18," the guy told me.

"Why?" I asked.

"It's just how we are," he said.

Next, was another waitressing job.

"You're hired honey. When can you start?" the cook asked.

"As soon as possible," I smiled.

"Tomorrow morning," he said.

"Ok, thank you so much," I smiled and walked out of the restaurant. YES! This job wasnt going to pay much, definitely not enough to support myself. Maybe I could just live on the streets for awhile and save up money, for when the baby is born.

I walked back to the motel and threw myself on the bed.

"Im gonna call Rock," I said and picked up the phone and dialed the number.

"Hello?" I heard Rock answer.

"Rock!" I exclaimed.

"Melissa!" he said, sounding surprised.

"Hey," I smiled.

"How are you? Is everything ok?" he asked.

"Yeah, everything is fine. I got a job today, so..." I said.

"Already?" he asked.

"They were desperate," I laughed.

"How are you feeling?" he asked sincerely.

"Like shit. I saw Ricky today," I told him.

"Did he say anything to you?" he asked, sounding a little worried.

"No, I dont think he saw me," I replied.

"Well, thats good. Well where are you staying?" he asked.

Rock and I talked for a good twenty minutes, before we decided to get off. Besides AJ was due home from work any minute. I layed back against the pillows and felt my stomach growl.

"Well... I guess I better get something to eat," I said to myself.

I walked out of the motel room and almost ran smack into someone. I looked up and was face to face with Shawn, the guy from the bus.

"Shawn!" I exclaimed.

"Hey! I didnt know you were staying here," he laughed.

"Likewise. I was just going to get something to eat, would you like to come with me?" I asked.

"Sure, that's where I was going too," he smiled.

"Great, so have you met your father yet?" I asked as we began to walk.

"Uh, yeah. He wasnt too happy to see me," he sighed.

"Why?!" I exclaimed. We walked into a diner, similar to the one I was in this morning.

"He had other kids. Five of them. We talked for a little bit, but I didnt find out much. His youngest daughter, just turned 16 and she's having her first baby. His boys werent around much, and his oldest daughter left awhile back for a better life. We mostly talked about the kids he didnt leave," he said sadly.

"Im sorry," I frowned.

"It's not your fault. Shit happens," he shrugged.

"Well, when are you going to go back to Georgia?" I asked curious.

"Im not," he answered.

"Why?" I asked.

"Can I get you something to drink?" asked a waitress.

"Um... yeah, I'll have Dr.Pepper," I said.

"Ok, and you?" she asked Shawn.

"Pepsi," he said.

"Ok, I'll be back," she said after setting menus down. I picked up one and began looking over the contents.

"So, why arent you going back?" I asked.

"Because, maybe I can find work up here, just for a few months. I dont want my mother to get upset about my real dad," he said.

"Oh." I nodded. After eating and paying (which Shawn insisted upon doing), we went back to my motel room. I called the front to find out if anyone called me while I was gone. I did give Rock the number.

"Do I have any messages?" I asked.

"Yes ma'am. An AJ called you and requested you to call him back," she told me.

"Thank you," I said and hung up. I looked at Shawn and sighed.

"Him?" he asked. I nodded.

"Should I call back?" I asked.

"If you want..."
