Chapter Nine

I walked into the apartment after my "interview", searching the wall for a light switch to light the kitchen. I finally found it and sighed as I set my purse on the counter.

"Welcome back. How'd it go?" Shawn asked walking into the kitchen.

I jumped and then replied, "Jeez, you scared me. It went good. I got the job," I said smiling. I hadnt told Shawn where exactly my job was.

"That's great!" he exclaimed.

"Yeah, I'll be getting paid a lot," I said breathing a sigh of relief.

"So, you never told me exactly where it was," he said, hinting to me that he wanted to know.

"Oh, it's at a club," I replied, he didnt need to know what kind of club that was.

"Really? Do you know how much you will be getting a night?" he asked.

"Yeah, the guy said on a good night probably a couple hundred," I said.

"A couple hundred?" he stuttered.

"Yeah, something to help us out very much," I laughed.

"You're telling me," he said, smiling.

"Yeah," I said, looking around nervously. I couldnt let Shawn know that I was becoming a stripper. I was going against something I didnt believe in, but it was helping me survive and most importantly, my baby.

"Well, why dont you get to bed, you must be tired," he told me.

"Ok," I said sighing, knowing I was exhausted. I walked to the bedroom and changed into a pair of pajama pants and a tank top. I laid down and immediatly fell asleep.

*The Next Morning*

Marianna only got up a few times in the middle of the night, and I was shocked when I woke up the next morning, with her still sleeping. I smiled, happy to not have woken up to her cry. I crawled out of bed and took advantage of my "free time" and took a shower and got dressed into a pair of jeans and a sweater, it was starting to get cool outside.

When I walked into the bedroom, Marianna was wide awake, just looking around.

"Hey girl," I said smiling.

I picked her up and walked to the kitchen and prepared a bottle for her. When she was done, I put her in her swing and sat down in the rocking chair and turned on the television.

Just as I was getting into my show, the phone rang. I groaned and got up to answer it.

"Hello?"

"Melissa?"

"AJ?"

"Yeah, you recognized my voice."

"Why wouldnt I?"

"I dont know."

"So... how'd you get this number?"

"You're dad gave it to me."

"Oh, so, what's up?"

"I just wanted to call and see how the baby was."

"She's fine, and her name is Marianna."

"That's a pretty name."

"I know, that's why I chose it."

"So, how are you doing?"

"AJ get to your point."

"Can't I just call and see how you are doing?"

"You didnt care before."

"Melissa..."

"What?" I asked.

"Who are you talking to?" I heard a female voice yell in the background at AJ's.

"AJ, just call me when you're little girlfriend isnt throwing a fit," I said, annoyed.

"Mind you're own business woman," he yelled to her.

"No, Melissa... wait," he said.

"You're talking to that bitch?!" she yelled.

"AJ, I dont have time for this," I said, rolling my eyes. I wasnt going to let this upset me anymore. I have more important things to worry about now. If AJ ever wants me back, he'll know in his heart what to do.

I hung up the phone and looked at Marianna.

"Well, girl, it's just you and me, and Shawn too," I said, picking her up. I looked down into her big brown eyes that reminded me of AJ's painfully beautiful eyes.

I felt the tears swell my eyes, but I blinked them away.

"Melissa! Im home!" Shawn called walking into the kitchen.

"What are you doing home?" I asked, suprised to see him home so soon.

"I took the rest of the day off," he said smiling.

"Why?" I asked.

"I wanted to spend the day with you and Marianna," he said, looking hurt.

"Oh, well, ok," I said, confused.

"I wanted to take you out to lunch and everything," he said, rushing around, packing things in the diaper bag.

"Why are you in such a hurry?" I asked, watching him.

"Huh? What do you mean?" he asked.

"You're rushing around like a mad man," I said, still watching him.

"No, Im not," he denied.

"Whatever Shawn," I sighed and began to put my shoes on. I changed Marianna's diaper and clothes into something that would keep her warm and put her in the stroller Alana donated to me.

Shawn and I left the apartment and began our walk down the street.

"So, you just came home to take me out to lunch?" I asked.

"Yeah, why not?" he asked.

"I just think that's a little weird," I commented and looked up at him. He was looking across the street. He looked down at me and rushed me around a corner.

"What are you doing?" I asked, turning, trying to catch a glimpse of what he was looking at.

"Huh? Nothing, I just forgot to tell you to turn down this street," he said, looking at me, smiling.

"Why are you acting weird?" I questioned.

"Nothing, honestly," he said.

"Ok..."

"Here we are," he said stopping at a tiny diner.

"Ok," I said walking in. He looked down the street before coming into the diner.

"What are you looking for?" I asked, feeling suspicious.

"Nothing, I promise," he replied.
