Chapter One

“Can’t you just be happy for me?” I asked, annoyed with my boyfriend.

“How can I be happy? You are going to New York and I won’t see you for a year,” he told me.

“Scott, this is all I have ever dreamed of. You can at least say congratulations,” I sighed.

“I don’t want to,” he said, stubbornly.

“That would figure,” I rolled my eyes. I grabbed my gym bag and walked off, leaving him standing in the middle of the sidewalk.

The best thing that could ever happen to me, has. I was accepted into the School of American Dancers. I’ve danced since I was a little girl and this is all I have ever wanted. My boyfriend, however, didn’t like the idea of me leaving for New York.

“Dahlia! Wait!” he called. I kept walking, not wanting him to try to talk me out of going.

“Baby,” he said, grabbing my arm.

“What?” I snapped, turning around.

“Please, don’t go,” he said.

“Scott, I’m going,” I said, “Now, you can either enjoy this next few days with me or just forget about me.”

He frowned and took my bag from me and we began to walk down the street.

After a long walk home, I walked inside and was greeted by the aroma of chocolate chip cookies.

“Ma! I’m home!” I called, Scott set my things on the floor as I ran to find my mother. I ran into the kitchen and saw her and a man I had never seen before in my life, sitting at the table, eating something.

“Who’s that?” I asked, scared of what she would say.

“Honey, this is my new boyfriend, Rick,” she told me.

My jaw dropped and I just stared. This was too soon. Why would she go and find a boyfriend so soon?

“Rick, this is Dahlia and her boyfriend, Scott,” my mother introduced.

“Nice to meet you,” Scott said, shaking his hand. I was still staring at them, shocked.

“Well, in case you care, I made the Academy,” I whispered.

“Honey! That’s wonderful!” my mother said jumping up from her seat. She pulled me into a hug and held me close.

“Honey, I am so proud of you,” she said, giggling.

“Thanks, I think I am just going to go up to my room and start packing,” I whispered.

“So soon? When are you leaving?” she asked.

“Thursday,” I whispered.

“Oh my! It’s already Tuesday! We’ll all have to do something tomorrow together,” my mother suggested. I looked up at her and frowned. I didn’t want to do anything with her boyfriend. Just her, Scott, and me. That’s the way it’s always been. Well, at least since Dad died a year ago.

“Come on Scott, you can help me pack,” I whispered. I grabbed my gym bag and headed upstairs. Scott, was right behind me.

“Baby, are you ok?” he asked.

“NO!” I shouted. Scott looked at me blankly.

“Im sorry... but, why did she have to get a boyfriend so soon?” I asked, tears swelling my eyes.

“Dahlia, shh...” Scott said, wrapping his arms around me.

“I don’t understand,” I cried.

“Dahlia, baby, just think about what good happened today, ok?” he asked.

“I know,” I said, pulling away from him and wiping the tears away from my eyes.

“Come on, I will help you pack,” he smiled.

“Thank you,” I sighed and grabbed my suitcase and threw it on the bed. I packed everything I thought I would need and I had an extra bag for the clothes I would wear in the next few days.

“You are so beautiful,” Scott smiled as we laid in my bed. It was late, so Scott was staying over.

“I can’t believe we are already out of high school,” Scott whispered, pulling me closer to him. He kissed my head and began to rub my arm.

“I know, I never thought I would get out of school,” I laughed.

“Yeah, me either. But, we’re both going off to do what we love, the only difference is Im staying here,” he said.

“Well, while you’re out there becoming some famous lawyer, I’m going to become some big dancer who is going to knock them out,” I laughed.

“We’ll be such a weird couple. The neighbors will talk about us,” Scott laughed.

Scott and I always talked about getting married and having kids. He would be a lawyer and I would be a dancer. It was always planned.

“I love you Scott,” I whispered, looking up at him.

“I love you too Dahlia,” he smiled. I presses my lips to his and savored the sweet kiss he delivered to me.

*The Next Day*

“Good morning, Mom,” I smiled walking into the kitchen. I forgot all about what happened last night. I looked over at the breakfast table and saw Rick sitting at the table with a cup of coffee, a paper, and a plate of eggs and bacon sitting in front of him. I got a hurt feeling in the pit of my tummy.

“Good morning sweetie. I was thinking that Rick, you, Scott, and I could all go shopping today. We need to get you some new clothes for your trip,” my mother suggested. I frowned. As much as I didn’t want to spend time with Rick, I figured it would be the only way to spend time with my mother, so I nodded and headed back upstairs to take a shower. When I got out of the shower, Scott was up. He grumbled something and walked into the bathroom. I laughed, he never was much of a morning person. I changed into a pair of tight blue jeans and a red tank top. I slipped on my brown Birkenstock’s and left my hair to hang against my back. I applied my makeup and as soon as I finished, Scott walked out of the bathroom, dressed and ready to go. I laughed at him.

“What?” he asked.

“You walk in there dead and then you walk out like nothing happened,” I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“Yeah, well... I was tired,” he laughed. I smiled and kissed his nose.

“Come on, we’re going shopping,” I smiled.

“Don’t you get enough of that?” Scott asked.

“Nope, besides, it’s a ‘family’ event, so come on,” I smiled.

“Mom’s boyfriend too?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I rolled my eyes.

“It shouldn’t be too bad, baby,” he said, smiling.

“Yeah...” I mumbled.

“Dahlia, we’re ready to go,” my mother said, knocking on my bedroom door. I took a deep breath and Scott and I walked out. We all walked downstairs and left for the mall. *At the End of The Day*

“He’s not bad,” Scott whispered in my ear. We were sitting in the backseat. I glared at the front as Rick held my mothers hand while he drove MY mother’s car.

“Yeah, right,” I grumbled and crossed my arms and looked out the window.

“Honey, we act the same way,” he whispered.

“It’s different,” I told him.

“How?” he asked.

“Because, that is not my dad,” I said, tears in my eyes.

“I know, come here,” he said, putting his arm around me and pulling me to him. He kissed the top of my head and I leaned against him.

“I’m going to miss you so much,” he told me.

“I’m going to miss you too,” I smiled up at him.

“I will write you everyday and I will call every other day, ok?” he asked.

“Ok,” I smiled.

“You’re my baby,” he said, laughing.

“Yeah, I guess I am,” I laughed.
