The Effects of Music
6/25 - I have a big question that I have a hard time explaining. I talked about morals as being products of evolution, but how we can we explain the way music affects us with it? I'm not talking about music that has gross lyrics or that has quick loud parts that startle you. I'm talking about how subtle sounds and notes can cause fear, happiness, sadness, or relaxation. Today music therapy has become an accepted practice. How can sound waves make that kind of effect on us? Maybe it has something to do with some sounds resembling the growl of a preditor or the buzz of a harmful insect, the singing of a bird causing relaxation or the trickle of a stream as peaceful happiness because it signifies survival. Help me out!
6/12 - Where will music go in the future? Music has always been one of the more healthy forms of rebellion for kids, but now it seems that music has got as loud and fast and gross as it's gonna get. Will the lack of rebellion in music lead to other rebellious behavior like violence? Along with this note, people can't really rebel or release anger by swearing either since swearing has become the common language. What does this all mean?
Does music cause rebellion, making kids snap and wreck havoc? I don't think so. I think most everything has to do with the parents. First of all, they wouldn't have to "snap" if they had a healthy relationship with their parents. And secondly, if the music was that destructive, the parents wouldn't let the kids listen to it anyway. If they raise them right, they will listen to their parents. All I do know is that dark, scary, loud music makes people less content.
I think it is important for people to appreciate all types of music. Currently I'm into techno as can be seen on the index. (Let me know if that music bugs you.)
