Roxas,
city, central Philippines, capital of Capiz Province, on the
Jintotolo Channel, at the mouth of the Panay River. A rail
terminus and the chief port of northern Panay Island, it is a
center for the export of copra and canned fish processed here. The
surrounding area grows rice, coconuts, fruit, hemp, and tobacco.
Roxas was chartered in 1951 as Capiz, but the name was later
changed. Population (1999 estimate) 36,071.
