The story is about a cattle drover
who was murdered and buried in a shallow grave
under a big cotton wood tree
standing next to an old road!

From a distance a young boy stands
motionless in the shadows
and watches as two figures labor
by lantern light to bury their latest victim.

At the age of seventy six the old man
tells his daughter of this story
and what he had seen that night so long ago!

For sixty five long years he never
spoke a word of this to any one
always in fear that some one would find out
he had seen what had happen !

Telling his story to his daughter
helped her to understand why her father
never wanted her or her brothers
speaking to strangers passing by
on the old road.

It also helped to explain why passer by’s
had reported seeing a strange orange light
floating through the air in the
same location where the old cotton wood stood! !

This is a true story, the small boy was my grand father,
the strange light well” some say
that the light is gone
but again some say that
it’s legend still lives on
along the banks of
big beaver creek.
