Mary Margaret Humes on The Live Show Monday, June 1, 1998 Hosts of the show doing the interview
are Stephanie Edwards and Will Schreiner.
Mary Margaret Humes: ...and after, um, I think it was 5 weeks into the show, we were
the highest rated show in Warner Brother television network history, so yeah
Stephanie Edwards: Good grief.
MMH: (laughing) We have a little job security, I think.
Will Schreiner: Well, that’s good. So tell me the show is about a bunch of kids in a
creek?
SE: Mmhmm, yah
MMH: The show is about coming of age.
WS: Coming of age.
MMH: Four teenagers coming of age. And I think it really, um, reaches a vast audience
because everybody can empathize with at least one of the characters on the show, whether
they’re, you know reliving their moment, living in the moment, or anticipating the
moments of like the first kiss and the first break-up.
SE: Except that Mary-Margaret plays the wife who’s having an affair.
MMH: (regretfully) Yah, I am.
SE: Even thought John Wesley Shipp plays the husband.
WS: Right, right.
MMH: Well, can you imagine having an affair when you have a husband...
SE: (interrupting) No
MMH: ... like John Wesley Shipp?
SE: No
MMH: He’s gorgeous, he’s sexy, he’s talented. I looked at him, I’m like, oh yah, I can
see why I’m cheating on this guy. (chuckles)
SE: Sure.....
Do we have a scene to show them from this, uh, torrid...
MMH: I think maybe we do.
SE: A scene now featuring Mary-Margaret.
The clip shown is from episode 4 Carnal Knowledge when she asks Dawson why she didn’t
see him at the station. He was there, but found her kissing Bob, and he ran off, and
she doesn’t know that he saw what happened and is confused as to why he’s acting so
pre-occupied.
WS (host): Well, there you go. So, you have to, you have to give him guidance. How is
the relationship like with your son?
SE: Is that the fella you’re having the affair with?
MMH: (laughing) No, that’s my son.
WS: That’s her son.
All three of them laugh
SE: He does play your son...
MMH: He plays my son. He’s actually 21 years old in real age, but he’s playing, um 15.
But I have to tell you the cutest little story. When I first met James I got off an
airplane, I had no make-up on, we shoot down in Wilmington, North Carolina. We’re
staying at this hotel where
there’s not even a bus boy, or uh a bell captain to take any luggage...
WS: (interrupting) Vintage hotel.
MMH: Yah yah yah. Smells like uh, Lysol this hotel. Anyways I get out the
WS: (interrupting) Check out time and a jump out time
SE laughs
MMH: (laughing)Yah, pretty much. Pretty much...
Um, so anyways I get off the elevator with all of my bags and I see this really cute kid
walking towards me and I’m thinking to myself, oh my goodness, if this is the guy that
I’m having the affair with, my life is good!
SE: Mmhmm
MMH: And we walk by each other, and he said “Hey” and I said “Hey”. He said “are you on
Dawson’s Creek” and I said “well yes I am and are you” and he says “yes”and I said “Who
are you?” and he said (pauses) “I’m Dawson”
SE: Mmhmm
MMH: And I’m like “Oh my God, you can’t be my son and he says “Hi Mommy”.
SE: Right, yah.
WS:It makes you feel older.
SE: It is so painful, which makes us.. . you know, don’t get me started on this,
because...
WS: (interrupting) Well then don’t start (jokingly)
SE: Mothers on series these days are very close to the age of the sons. It is not so
with the dads and, the uh, the children.
MMH: Yah
SE: Yah, but uh, you’re dealing with it.
MMH: I’m dealing with it, yah. Well, we have our little kissing scenes like the little
pecks on the cheek. Every morning like hi honey, good morning honey, we always, um, look
at each other and say (laughing) “No tongue, no tongue”.
SE: (jokingly) Important in a relationship
All three are laughing
MMH: (laughing) Well, there is that, yah
WS: Do your fans get mad at you for being this hussy?
MMH: Um, some of them. I get a lot of fan mail from men that do like me. But I get some
fan mail from kids saying, you know “ Why are you this mean Mommy?” And, actually, I was
in Gelson’s the other day in the produce department, a little girl came up to me and said
“I just hate what you’re doing to your husband!” and I’m like “It’s only” [you know]
“television, honey”.
SE: It’s pretend.
WS: It’s only a show folks,
MMH: (interrupting) yah
WS: It’s only a show.
WS: Well, Tuesday nights at 9 on the WB Dawson’s Creek. Mary-Margaret Humes thanks for
being with us.
MMH: Thank you
SE: She is huge for good reasons. Very talented and we’re glad you came.
MMH: Thank you Stephanie.
SE: You betcha.
