The Skutatoi, infantry spearmen, are a key element in my Byzantine army. These unit are used to hold one flank while the heavy cavalry smash the opponent's opposite flank. Having a WS 4, able to form shield walls and armed with thrusting spears the Skutatoi units are tough to defeat.

These are Old Glory Skutatoi. They come in three different bags, one each of first (heavy armor), second (light armor) and third (no armor) rank spearmen. The officer figures like the one to the left are in a separate infantry command pack. |
These infantry formations are allowed to combine with archers, placed in the rear ranks. With a BS 4 these archers can certainly hit their targets and also add to the rank bonus of the formation for hand to hand combat resolution. The spears are made out of plastic rod.
