The arts comprise a category that involves not only the material arts of painting and sculpture, but also entertainment, be it dancing or singing. The arts are a much honored tradition in Middle Earth and those players seeking to become a bard, court jester, minstrel or artist may do well to find some skills in this category. These skills further an innate skill and those trained in the Arts can make the wonders of society. Elves excel at all those skills while Orcs are unable to learn the finer instrumental skills.

The following are the Arts skills: Brass, Composition, Dancing, Juggling,
Painting, Percussion, Sculpture, Singing, String and Woodwind.

Brass

This skill is the ability to play horn instruments. This would include trumpets as well as bugle horns. Players who wish to be musicians may opt for this skill. Also, aspiring heralds may want a basic level of skill in brass.

Composition

Composition entails the ability to compose music, poetry or prose. Often people with this ability have an innate sense of rhythm that under more direct apprenticeship can evolve into mastery. Characters who wish to become bards or story-tellers may wish to have some basic knowledge in this category. Mastery in this category is rare and often talent driven.

Dancing

This skill reveals how well the player can dance. Not only does the skill level reflect the dancing ability, but it also considers how well the person can adapt to different styles of dance. Entertainers may wish to include this skill in their repertoire.

Juggling

This skill considers how well the player can juggle. The level of this skill considers how many objects the juggler may juggle. Basic skill can indicate rudimentary knowledge while mastery indicates the ability to juggle items such as knives, cards etc. This is a useful skill to entertainers including bards and jesters.

Painting

Be it oil or pastel, painting is a form of expression of the eons. Painters of basic skill can convey simple sketches. Higher levels indicate a mastery of depth, colour, shading and perspective. Often painters can be found in cities, where they may find wealthy patrons to sponsor their livelihoods.

Percussion

This skill is the ability to play percussion instruments such as drums. Musicians may wish to opt this skill, but it may also be useful to soldiers who wish to keep the beat of a march or the proper pace of the oarsmen in a galley.

Sculpture

Sculpture is an art form by which the artist can create rational or lifelike figures from stone or wood. Sculpture can be either in relief or free standing form. The level of skill in sculpture will consider how well the artist can work with diverse materials, the scale of their work as well as the intricacies involved.

Singing

The vocal skill is the trained ability to sing. While most singers often have an innate ability, further training in this skill can lead to mastery. Minstrels and bards may wish to opt for this skill. Typically the most gifted of singers are among the Elves (and of those especially the
Sindar), who can achieve higher and lower notes than other races.

String

This skill involves the ability to play stringed instruments such as a violin or the harp. Many minstrels and bards use these particular kinds of instruments, and it is most pleasant to Free Peoples' ears. Orcs do not use such instruments and cannot learn the skill.

Woodwind

This skill involves the ability to play woodwind instruments such as the flute or pipes. Musicians or minstrels may wish to opt for this skill, especially among the Elves. Orcs do not use such instruments and cannot learn the skill.
