Artisans are people who create finished products from raw materials. Often the goods that are bought by a person were created by an artisan - from candles to shoes. People who are artisans are often trained from a small age being taken in by a master. Before they are considered a master, most artisans have to produce a 'masterpiece' to be reviewed by the guild or board responsible for that particular craft. The following are the Artisan skills: Brewing, Carpentry, Coopering, Lampmaking, Pottery, Masonry, Tailoring, Tanning, Weaving. New players are allowed no more than one skill from this category.

Brewing

A brewer creates fermented beverages such as beer and ale. Skill level will influence the quality of the drink created. It is notable that winemaking is a skill considered of the same craft on Akallabeth, albeit the domain of the more advanced holders of that skill. The Orcs excel at this skill and their master brewers distill beverages of great potency.

Carpentry

Carpentry is the ability to build or repair wood structures such as houses, scaffolds, ships etc. Increasing mastery in carpentry will allow the player to work on an increasingly diverse amount of structures. For example, a player with basic carpentry would be able to do simple repairs in their home, a master carpenter can design a mansion. Carpentry goes well with shipbuilding skills as they overlap at higher levels.

Coopering

The cooper is a person who makes or repairs casks, barrels or tubs. The cooper is a necessary part of commerce given that most commodities are shipped by such devices that the cooper would make. A master cooper will be able to build a chest or a strongbox for your precious belongings.

Lampmaking

The lampwright constructs lamps and other lighting devices that burn oil or other fuels. The lampwright provides the light necessary for large cities. Master lampwrights can create lamps which are true objects of art - they burn in diverse colours and heats giving off different beams of light, and are much prized by the wealthy.

Pottery

The ability to make and fashion ceramic wares, especially earthenware and stoneware. Pottery is often used for the storage of goods and is a vital part of society. Durable and convenient, it is a hallmark of civilization. Master potters' vases of intricate design are renowned objects of art.

Masonry

The ability to build or dress stone. Stonemasons are needed in large building projects such as royal roads, bridges and palaces. Mastery in stonemasonry indicates an ability to plan and execute large scale projects and requires excellent grasp of the building principles. The great towers, fortresses and roads of the Numenoreans are a tribute to their master stonemasons' excellence, and the mansions of the Dwarves - to theirs.

Tailoring

The ability to make, mend or alter clothes such as jackets, tunics and trousers. Tailoring is an often requested service for those who cannot make their own clothing or need repairs to damaged clothing. Master tailors create clothing extremely resistant to damage and wear.

Weaving

Weaving is the ability to interlace fibrous materials such as threads, yarns, and strips. Expert weavers can produce ropes, cloth for sails or other such items to be used on a daily basis. Master weavers of some races, notably Elves, have the ability to imbue the cloth with certain powers such as concealment or charm. Do not confuse with tailors - these powers are due to the cloth supplied by weavers.
