QUEST SOLUTION:
STEAL KLUSO'S KNIFE AND KILL GUIARE A'VELSI IN BROAD DAYLIGHT


Where: From Atli the Quick in the Inn in Drangheim.

Promotion: This quest is not required to advance in the game, but is required for promotion to Assassin.

Summary: In order for you to be promoted to Assassin, you must first prove you are capable of the job. Atli asks you to do two things: Kill Guiare A'Velsi in broad daylight, and steal Kluso's heavily guarded knife.

How to do: Both A'Velsi and Kluso are in Drangheim, so you don't need to go very far.

To kill A'Velsi, walk toward the training area in Drangheim after you get the quest. Walk around in the large green area there until you see someone dressed like one of the bandits (like the Yobboes). That is Guaire A'Velsi. Just attack him and kill him. No one will care. That's the easy part of the quest.

The difficult part is to steal the knife. Kluso's house is on the upper level of Drangheim. Don't go in the front door. Instead, go over as if you were going to see Sigmund the Stressed, but don't cross the bridge. Go up the ladder instead, and come back to Kluso's house on the balcony. Go around the back. There will be a window there you can enter through. Go in.

Now look at the map to get an idea of the layout of the house. You are in a bedroom and will have to go to the stairway. Avoid the room at the upper left corner of the floorplan. It is two stories tall, with a balcony overlooking it from the second floor. In it is an incredibly high-level mage (Kluso?) whom you cannot beat, at least not at this stage of the game. The knife is not in there anyway.

All the upstairs guards are sleeping and will not wake up unless you shake them (pay no attention to all the noises). Go on out in the hallway, and follow it around the bend until you are almost to the open area, then stop.

Now is the time to cast any protective spells which you have: Bless works well; also Faith. I cast Pain Reflection as well (on everyone, which takes a bit of time), and also Fleet Foot. When you've finished there, head on down the stairs (you may have to fight one or two of the guards on the second floor; they randomly patrol up to the top of the stairs).

Fight the guards (there are four) until they die (you may get killed a couple of times yourself, depending on your level; just re-start from the autosave, or you can save after you cast the protective spells, which saves some time later).

Now look at the map again. You need to go to the room in the lower left corner of the floorplan. Inside you will see a fireplace. The knife is hanging over the fireplace, but don't pick it up just yet (an alarm will go off when it's picked up).

First close the door behind you. Now heal everyone up as far as you can. Then pick up the knife. The upstairs guards will all wake up when the alarm goes off, but if the door is closed, they won't come in the room.

Save your game in a different slot from where you normally would, then look again at the map. Find the front door of the house (it's in the center of the right-hand side of the floorplan). That is your destination. Now, open the door and run.

The guards will be coming up and trying to block your way out (and hacking at you), but you must dodge them and get to the door. When you get to the screen that says "Leave Kluso's house?" say "yes" and you are safe.

Just return to Atli at the Inn and he will promote you to Assassin (you must complete both parts of the quest before you will receive any experience points).
