QUEST SOLUTION: | RESCUE IVSAR FORKTOOTH
Required: This quest is required to advance in the game.
Summary: Thorvaldssen knows he will need a good general to repel the coming invasion. He therefore tasks the party with releasing his former general, Ivsar Forktooth, from the prison where he's being held in Drangheim.
How to do: This quest sounds much harder than it is. Drangheim Prison is in Drangheim (but not in the city area). Go past the city, straight along the path and turn right towards the windmill when you see it. If you don't get too far to the left on the path, nothing will attack you on the way. Look at the map. The prison is the very large building in this direction. Go there and go in.
The guard will tell you that you can't get in without a Visitor's Pass. Go up to the guard in the center, answer the three questions he asks you: Are you a criminal? NO. Are you planning a prison break? NO. Do you have any weapons on you? NO. He'll give you a Visitor's Pass and the guard at the doorway will then let you in.
You are then free to wander about anywhere in the prison so long as you do not attack the guards. Go through the first set of doors (behind the guard who gave you the Visitor's Pass), and then down the hallway to the second set of doors. Go through. Follow the hallway around until you come to some stairs - go up them and head to your right. Go through the doors you see there. The guards inside might suddenly run to handle something in the hall behind them or they might not. Don't worry about it - just go on around the corner.* If the guards ran around it before you, you will see them fighting some Nagate (giant beetles). The Nagate (four of them) will win and then come after you. If the guards didn't fight them, they will still be there, but won't attack unless you pass the two guards standing at attention. Go ahead and kill the Nagate now anyway (just be careful not to hit the guards and they will ignore your weapons), since you have to come back this way and you won't want to waste time fighting them if they attack you then.
When the Nagate are dead, go through the door that has the two guards by it (they will ignore you). Talk to the man inside (the cook) and answer him truthfully. You'll find his brother has been imprisoned too and that he has built a secret passage to that prison level - and he'll unlock it for you (the second "secret door" is actually an illusory wall - just walk through it). Go along the passage to the room with the dwarf blacksmith (at the end of the passage you will have to touch the panel to get it to open), then open the only door in the room and walk along the passage and up the stairs.
At the top of the stairs, turn to your right. There are two cells to your right that have someone in them. They are the cook's brother and General Ivsar. If you're lucky, their cells will be open (the cells in this block are randomly open). If not, you'll have to unlock them - from inside the guard room.
Inside the guard room on the same wall as the entrance door, you will find a set of levers. Just move all of them to the "out" position and the cell doors should be open (if not, keep trying until they are open). I waited until there was only one guard in the room to do this and he was facing the other direction - but I'm not sure it mattered. Go back out and talk to both the prisoners (be sure and talk to the cook's brother first). Ivsar will follow you, but not "join" your party. If you escape the prison alive now, so will he.
First make sure there is no guard directly behind you in the immediate corridor. Then leave the cell. As you get back near the guard room, the alarm will go up. Just run, without hesitation, back down the way you came in to the blacksmith's room, and touch the anvil to reveal the secret passage. The guards will not follow you if you go this way (at least not if you hurry). Just go back out of the prison the exact way you came in - the guards in this area will not react (since they are unaware of the secret door and won't think a prisoner breaking out of Ivsar's cell would end up in their area). You will not be pursued (at least not if you hurry) until you reach the bottom level (the corridor you first entered behind the Visitor's Pass guard). When you get there, turn right (towards the entrance) and run for the door. Go through it and run back around the barred area past the guard that let you in. If you are quick, he will not even get a blow in, but react just as you pass him. Run for the door and you should get the "Leave Drangheim Prison?" dialogue box. Say yes, and you're free - they won't follow you outside.
Once outside, Ivsar will tell you he has no interest in following you around or joining you and that he will be in the Inn in Sturmford getting drunk if you want to find him. Whenever you get back to Sturmford, just go to the Inn and talk to him and he'll follow you to Bjorni's so you can complete the quest.**
Note 1: It is possible to reach Ivsar's cell by going another way besides the secret passage. However, if you go this way, you will not be able to escape via the secret passage since the door will not be unlocked by the cook, and you will have to fight your way out of the prison instead of practically walking out.
Note 2: It is also possible to enter the prison covertly through the well in the windmill village area. Going this way you will have to navigate through the lower prison area, which has been abandoned to the Nagates, but eventually you will come up in the room with the helpful cook. You can also leave by this same route if you wish.
* If you are able to open black chests when you do this quest, before you go around the corner to face the Nagate, go through the doors to your right. There is a black chest in an alcove of that room.
** Be sure to wait for Ivsar to catch up with you when you go to Bjorni's to complete the quest. If you talk to Bjorni before he gets there, you will receive the reward, but Ivsar will continue to follow you everywhere you go in Sturmford City (until you leave the area).
