QUEST SOLUTION: | PREVENT ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON JARL OF THJORGARD, AND RUIN AND SAVE A FAMILY
Promotion: This quest is not required to advance in the game but is required for promotion to Paladin.
Summary: In order for you to be promoted to Paladin, you must first prove you are worthy. There are two separate requirements: One is that you must prevent an assassination attempt on the Jarl of Thjorgard. The other is for you to ruin and save a family. Neither of these will be recognized by Grehgknak until both have been completed (although the Jarl of Thjorgard will reward you for saving his life - that reward is the "to fulfill" amount of XP and GP shown on the main quest page for this quest).
How to do: To prevent the assassination attempt, go to the Jarl of Thjorgard and inform him of what you know about it. He will formulate a plan and ask you to fight in the Arena the next day, where he is certain you will be able to stop the attempt (he will send a body double instead of appearing himself). Go to the arena as planned and fight. It doesn't matter at what level you choose to fight; you will not really get to fight anyway, and will not receive any Arena fight award. Go into the arena and wait. One of the side doors will open and a man will come out. He usually hangs around and doesn't come out until the door has opened twice, although you will be able to see him. Go up to him and talk. You'll find out that his name is Byri the Scarred and that he has been hired to assassinate the Jarl. Run him off after you have obtained the name of the person who hired him, Harris Willington.
If you go back to the Jarl with Willington's name, he will ask you to go find him. You can save a little of your time by finding Willington first - he's in the general store, behind the counter (there are two men behind the counter). The general store is the one with the covered porch across from the official weapons shop. He will tell you you'll never find him, but he won't run away or anything. Go back to the Jarl at this point and let him know where Willington is. He'll reward you.
The second part of the quest is a little less clear, because you aren't given a name or a place to start. But do you remember meeting a family in Sturmford where the father was missing? It's possible you also met a man skulking about the town who had a dialogue box of "How did you find me?" Go back to Sturmford and find this man again (he's near the temple). Get him to agree to turn himself in (he may or may not follow you). Go back to the house and talk to the older child, Itlor (who is definitely old enough to get a job). Agree to help him find a job.
Once you've done this, you'll need to find someone in the village who is willing to hire Itlor. By checking the shops, you'll find that the spell book seller is looking for some help. Arrange for him to go to work there.
When you've completed both parts of the quest, return to Grehgknak at the Monestary in Lindisfarne, and he will give you the remainder of the reward and promote you to Paladin.
