QUEST SOLUTION: | SURVIVE THE TRAINING HALL
Optional: This quest is not required to advance in the game.
Summary: The innkeeper in Sturmford instructed you to find this guy and ask him about where to find a dragon to slay. But the old man informs you that you won't be ready to face the dragon unless you can first survive the trials of the Training Hall, and says to come back when you've managed that.
How to do: This is not a true quest - you receive no monetary reward or experience points for reporting back once it's done. In fact, you do not need to do this quest at all. Simply talk to the old man again and he will assume you've been through the Training Hall. But he is right in that you will not survive an encounter with the dragon unless you can easily survive the Training Hall, so it's advisable to do it anyway. The experience and gold reward listed (as "varies" are for the encounters inside the Training Hall; you may receive them without being give the quest.
The Training Hall is in the countryside of Thjorgard. Follow the narrow path through the gorge and keep going straight ahead to get to the building. When you get there, you'll find the front door locked from the inside. Go around the building to the right and climb up some broken planks and rocks to the roof. Go on around the roof and climb up to the second floor roof. You should find a broken section of wall which you can break down to get in. Once you do, go on out onto the wagon-wheel structure. It will break and fall to the floor with your weight on it (you will take damage). Once this is done, you are committed to fighting your way out at least to the locked door.
There are several areas of the Hall. Obviously, your task is to kill all the creatures inside it (it is a "Training Hall" for monsters, chiefly undead such as ghouls and lizardmen). Don't miss using some of the equipment for your own party for cash prizes and treasure once the monsters are dead. To get out, you must go through the room with the large number of lizardmen training to the barred door, and hack and slash at the door to break apart the bar. Once this is done, you can enter and exit through this door (until the dungeon resets).
If you can't EASILY get through this dungeon, you are not yet ready to face the dragon, no matter what the old man says, though he will tell you what he knows about it.
