Jackson Gamers' English Civil War Campaign
Second game
Parliament Strikes Back!
This game was fought on May 1, 2004 with our ECW rules set and our "club" 15 armies. The "club" forces are owned by Jay Stribling, Jim Pitts, Robert Whitfield, Mark Stevens, Mike Lowry, and David Burton. We plan two more of these games, each on using only the survivors of the previous game. Therefore, it ill-behoves a general to throw his army away, winning this game, but starting the next battle with only fragments of his troops.
Jay Stribling was the game-master, and is your humble narrator

The main portion of the battlefield from the Parliamentary side. In the foreground the center of our lines is held by the Scots. They and the left wing infantry and cavalry face the Royalists on the hill. (Comment by Ed Sansing)

The southern part of the line, the Royalist left wing faces our right (Comment by Ed Sansing). The town of Unction in the lower right was one of the vital points that the Roundheads had to keep the enemy from taking. The other Parliamentary vital points were the baggage train, and the road to the rear.

One of the first moves the Royalist's made was to move their firelocks forward of the hill. Larry re-positioned the Scottish cavalry between the infantry in preparation to charge the guns on the hill (Comment by Ed Sansing).

Units on the Parliamentary right flank slide to their left covering the center as the Scots forces move to the left center to threaten the guns on the hill. The Royalist center infantry and some of their right wing cavalry prepares to move forward.

The Royalist right wing cavalry has assaulted and broken the Parliamentary infantry in the center. 3 regiments in the foreground will attempt to exploit the hole. In the background the Royalist left wing cavalry has intercepted the Scottish cav and pushed it back.

The Royalist left wing infantry make contact. The woods in the center of the picture protected the flank of the Parliamentary troops and would not allow the Royalists to overwhelm them. The Parliamentary forces held their ground.

In the next turn the Parliamentary troops rally and counterattack. In the middle the Royalist cavalry did not obey orders (it failed its command response) and was caught in the flank. In the background you can see the northern flank units locked in heavy combat. In the foreground the Parliamentary right wing cavalry has filled the hole caused earlier.

Victory Conditions
Each Player had three Vital Points on his side of the field to hold, and three Objectives on the enemy's side of the field to take. The first army to take at least two of his objectives, while holding at least two of his own vital points, wins the game. Since many times one army's vital point is the other's objectives, you get hammer-and-tongs battles over hills or villages.
So - Who won the battle anyway?
The Roundheads won - BIG. They, reinforced by the Scots foot and horse brigades, took half of the large hill, captured the Royalist Baggage train, and took ALL the Royalist cannon. At the same time they lost only one gun (due to fire casualties) and still held all thier vital point.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties but the reinforcments of the Scots came close to making up all the first battle's losses for the Parliamentary forces. The third battle will have to be a Roundhead attack on a position defended by the King's forces.
