Mark Stevens' game at RECON 2005

The Lost Patrol

Using a set of variant rules for The Sword and the Flame

Mark Stevens developed a scenario which showed off his very nicely painted French Foreign Legion force, and lots and lost of his dusty arabs!

A lone platoon of legionares is dreadfully lost. They take shelter in a deserted village. Slowly they realize thier trap, surrounded by hundreds of arabs. Thier only hope is the relief column, marching to their aid. Will the column arrive in time?

Trecherous men from the desert attired in traditional desert robes (which look like Wal-Mart shower robes) prepare to move against the dusty village containing the "Lost Patrol."

The Ambush - tribesmen open fire on the French Relief column. There was a constant trickle of casualties, but not enought to stop the soldiers of France!

Tirailleurs Senegalaise form line to receive the horsemen of the desert - OOPS! The tirailleurs should have been in closed order, not open order. That cost them dearly as they were almost wiped out.

March to the relief of your comrades in the village. Tirailleurs Senegalaise skirmish out in front of the column. And from the distant village comes the never-ceasing thunder of the machine gun.

The relief column, watched by players and visitors to the game, moves slowly along. Too slowly? Jay Stribling leans forward, and announces that the line of sight is blocked - no fire this turn!

The "outpost" - a ruin not far from the "the village" - also garrisoned by the men of the Legion's "Lost Patrol."

I played in this game at Recon 2005, what a blast! I was commanding the Arabs. My cavalry almost wiped out the Seneglese (beautifully painted) infantry in one charge. They fell back and were supported by Legionares who fired devastating vollys which routed my Arab horsemen.

At the village we killed all the Legionares in the outpost but failled to carry the village itself. The mad machine gunner trying to help his comrads fired into the mass mellee and got 11 hits out of 12 dice rolled! Four Legionares fell dead (key figure cards pulled) along with 7 Arabs. Yes, 11 hits!

With the remnants of three Arab foot units we charged the village only to be repulsed by the bayonets of EMPTY rifles. We should have fired one more turn. The Frogs won with only a Hotchkiss MG with 2 crew and 2 privates left. The French reinforcements were bearing down upon us so it was time to finish looting the dead and retire to the dunes.

The "Graying of the Hobby!" Larry Brom (in red hat) looks as if he has been out in the desert too long. Mark Stevens, the game-master (in blue shirt with back to camera) looks to Jay Stribling (in striped shirt) for rules interpretation, but Stribling - looking befuddled - is no help.

Sargent Schneider takes aim with the Hotchkiss machine gun. Swinging it from side to side, he flails the arabs.

Mark lies down for a little nap during the game! Actually he was checking the line of sight for the French.

Bravely the column marches on! Tirailleurs Senegalaise return fire against arab snipers in the hills.

The "outpost" under attack. Almost every one in the outpost was killed late in the game when Sgt. Schnieder, the valiant legion machine gunner, turned the barrel of his weapon in that direction and cut down the inhabitants of the ruin. Legionnaires and Arabs alike fell, wounded and dead.

A few tribesmen assemble after a failed assault on the town. They will return again and again. At the last turn of the game, the village was inhabited only by the machine gun crew, who had just fired their last belt, and two men of the platoon who were out of ammunition, but who threw back the last Arab assault with their bayonets.

The column was near, but had not yet arrived, yet the Arabs had seen enough death. They faded back into the desert, leaving the French victorious.

The aftermath - a village of the dead! A few men are on their feet but not many - what carnage. The vultures will feast!
