ROPEWAY AREA

This is where you end up after taking the tram from North Corel. This is where you enter the Gold Saucer. There's a save point that costs 5 GP and occasionally you can find a guy in the back who will sell you 1 GP for 100 Gil. You can run in and out of the Gold Saucer entrance until he appears, but you can only buy a maximum of 100 GP per visit - he disapperas after you buy the GP and you must run in and out of the Gold Saucer until he appears again to buy more. He will be towards the middle of the screen, more towards the top, above and to the right of the save point. When he appears, you can barely see his head peaking out behind what appears to be a building with a red roof and three windows that are lit up.

NOTES

This is where you come to fight in The Battle Arena

Impress Dio (when getting keystone) - receive Choco Feather (accessory) and Protect Vest (accessory)

The guy by the BP exchanger will explain how the Battle Arena works, about BP, and about a
Special Battle for the strongest fighters.

Note that a Round in the Battle Arena consists of eight consecutive battles with a random handicap selected by you in a slot machine style, between each battle. The Round ends if your HP reaches zero, if the enemy uses an attack that removes you from the battle, if you are petrified (turned to stone), if you exit the Round early (you get this option between each battle) or if you win all eight battles.

To fight a Round in the Battle Arena you must first have some GP (see next tip). Be sure you have the right equipment and materia (see the general tips and materia tips below). Go to the counter by the steps and talk to the girl there. Pay your 10 GP, then select who you want the fighter to be, and you begin.

You can win GP early in the game by betting on the Chocobo races or playing some games in Wonder Square (especially the Mog game for a quick and easy 30 GP, but you can only get this once). Also early in the game you can watch for a guy in the Ropeway Area who will sell you GP for gil. He charges 100 gil for 1 GP and will only sell you 100 GP at a time so you may want to make him a last resort (you could end up spending this much or more betting on the Chocobo races so it may not make that much of a difference, though). GP is easy to come by in Disc Two and Disc Three as you can race your own Chocobos and get GP instead of the item when you win. Check out the Chocobo Racing Prizes to see how much GP you can earn for each item but don't pass up having at least one each of the rare items offered as prizes, especially Hero Drink, Magic Counter, Precious Watch, Chocobracelet, Cat's Bell, Sneak Attack (or Pre-Emptive), Enemy Away, and Sprint Shoes. You can decide for yourself whether you want the item or the GP for Elixir, Megalixir, and Counter (the pink counterattack materia).

If you win all eight battles in a Round, or if you decide to exit out of a Round early, you win BP (battle points). How much BP you win depends on a number of factors. I'm not exactly sure what these factors are or how they determine the amount of BP you win, but I think at least some of the factors include the severity of the handicaps, the number of battles you win (i.e. you get more points for winning more battles), and the amount of time you take (maybe you get less BP if you take too much time to win all eight battles). Unfortunately I have no way to verify this other than my own personal experience. For example, I had one Round where I got nothing but Lucky 7 and Cure handicaps and only won 300 BP. During another Round I got broken Materia, broken accessory, Poison and so on and got over 3,000 BP. Also, although I have not verified it yet, I think you get more BP when you make it to the Special Battle.

After each Round, you can receive prizes. When I am fighting in the Regular Battle Rounds, I mostly win "Tissue" so I don't know if this is the only prize you can win during the Regular Battle Rounds. However, the first time you win a Round, check with the girl at the bottom of the stairs to receive Sprint Shoes (accessory). Later, in disc three, when you can win several Rounds consecutively, you will be invited to participate in Rounds called Special Battles. After you win the first Special Battle you will receive Final Attack Materia as a prize. Other prizes I have won so far include Autograph, Combat Diary, and Gambler (these were the prizes in order for defeating a Round the second, third and fourth times). I continued fighting and after receiving duplicates of these items (especially the diaries, I don't think I received a duplicate of Autograph) I won a Ribbon accessory.

TIPS

General
1) The more times you do battle, the better you will get
2) Save before entering outside of North Corel so you can reset if something goes wrong
3) Use Ultimate Weapons (you will not be concerned with any materia growth and these are your best weapons with 8 connected slots), use escort guard for male fighters or minerva band for female fighters, and use a ribbon as your accessory.
4) Keep Regen and Big Guard going - you never know when a broken materia handicap will come up.
5) It may be easier to win with less handicaps, but you may not gain as many battle points
6) The more and worse handicaps you get, the more battle points you may earn
7) There may also be a time constraint tied to battle points as well
8) In a final battle with Ghost Ship, finish it off as quickly as possible before it uses it's oar attack to remove you from the battle and end your Round
9) Remember to trade in ALL your BP before you leave as you lose whatever BP you have.
10) When you get broken materia handicaps all in a row, try to land the handicap on a materia type that is already broken. The same goes if you get a broken accessory. Another nice trick is to match the handicap to a defense that you have, such as equipped materia in your armor or your equipped accessory (land on mini, toad, or poison as much as you want to no effect if you have a ribbon equipped and it is not broken)
11) Try to equip as many useful and different materia as you can. For example if you only equip magic materia and you get a magic materia broken handicap, you are left with just your regular attack and your items. However if you equip some magic, some summons, some commands, some independent materia, and some support materia you will have something to fall back on (of course this doesn't help much if you get the handicap that breaks all of your equipped Materia).
12) The enemies you face will be the same ones you have encountered up to the point in the game you have reached. As a general rule their basic stats remain the same EXCEPT their HP is twice what it is in regular gameplay (at least in Disc Three, I am still trying to verify if this is true in Disc One and Disc Two). They still have the same level, MP, and weaknesses to exploit. You can also steal items and morph them as well. Also, especially in Disc 3, the game likes to send enemies at you that use a lot of status-based attacks like confuse, poison, sleep, mini, toad or frog, etc. Not so bad if you have ribbon accessory equipped and it is not broken. Once I got to the last battle, got a broken accessory handicap, and had to face Ho-chu. Needless to say he kept using his Big Pollen attack to put me to sleep and do damage so I never had a chance.

BACK TO BATTLE SQUARE LINKS
Suggested Materia (note that certain materia, enemy skills, armor, accessories, etc. will not be available at certain times in the game - for example you can't get Knights of the Round until Disc Two)
1) Enemy Skill (be sure you have key enemy skills 'white wind' and 'big guard' as well as 'aqualung,' 'trine,' and 'beta.')
2) Restore (leveled up to third star with Regen)
3) Knight of Round linked with MP Absorb or MP Turbo
4) Quadra Magic linked with Ultima, Comet or Bahamut Zero
5) 2X-Cut (leveled up to 4x-Cut) or Slash-All
6) Note: I tried 2X-Cut linked with HP absorb but it didn't work. I think HP and MP absorb only work when linked with Magic or Summons.
7) Early in the game (for example right after getting the buggy), you can win using Cloud with Force Stealer [with Fire (on Level 2 or 3), Restore (on Regen) and Long Range materias], Silver Armlet (with Enemy Skill, Shiva, and Elemental linked with Poison materias) and Peace Ring Accessory equipped.
8) A bit later in the game (After getting Cid and the Tiny Bronco) you can win with Yoshiyuki (with Enemy Skill and Long Range), Diamond Bangle [ with Restore (regen), ...] and ???? accessory equipped.
9) In Disc Two and Disc Three you can win using Cloud with Ultima Weapon (Long Range, HP Plus and MP Plus mastered, Slash-All, Knight of Round linked with MP Turbo, Quadra Magic linked with your choice of Comet, Ultima or Bahamut Zero) Escort Guard (Restore with Regen, Enemy Skill, and four connected slots with your pick of materia such as Elemental linked with mystify to protect you from a confusion spell if your accessory is broken; or maybe some useful command materia like Deathblow; or maybe a couple of Counterattack materias; you could also use Magic Counter paired with Knight of Round or Bahamut Zero or Ultima or ... well you get the picture; or how about Sneak Attack linked with some powerful magic or summon; you could toss Mega-All into the mix to back up your Slash-All in case you get a broken command materia handicap) and Ribbon accessory.
10) The Battle Arena is your chance to get really creative with materia combinations, especially late in the game.

SPECIAL BATTLE

In Disc Three, the guy by the BP exchanger will mention a Special Battle for the strongest fighters. He argues over what they mean by strongest. Well what they mean is someone who can beat the regular battle Rounds - a lot. And not just a lot in general, it must be a lot consecutively. For example, when I got the special battle, I had won a round, lost a round, won a round, lost another round, won two in a row, then exited and saved. I came back later and had to win nine more Rounds in a row before I was finally invited to participate in the Special Battle. After you are invited to participate, when you come back to register for a Round, you can fight in regular battles or special battles. The first time you win a Special Battle Round you will receive the coveted Final Attack Materia. For winning a second time you will receive Autograph (Dio's autograph). Beating it a third and fourth time win you Combat Diary (a record of Dio's fiercest battles) and Gambler (Dio's diary continued, the Gold Saucer years) respectively. During successive wins you will receive duplicates of Gambler and Combat Diary and eventually you may win a Ribbon accessory.
A Round in the Special Battle is not Random. You fight a predictable series of eight battles. The only thing that is not predictable is the handicaps. Otherwise the battles go like this:
Battle One - Sea Worm
Battle Two - Ho-chu
Battle Three - Unknown 3
Battle Four - Serpent
Battle Five - Wolfmeister
Battle Six - Behemoth
Battle Seven - Maximum Kimaira
Battle Eight - Proud Clod

CHOCOBO SQUARE

Chocobo Betting and Racing
Chocobo Betting
Go to the Gold Saucer and then go to Chocobo Square. Talk to ??? to learn how to bet on chocobos. Their summary goes like this: You pick which chocobo(s) will finish first and second and then buy the appropriate tickets. If the ticket you purchased is a winner, you'll receive a ticket for an item that will be listed on the panel. You can exchange your tickets for items or GP ... To begin betting you must first pay the 200 gil registration fee. After that you can purchase your tickets (i.e your bet on which chocobo(s) will come in first and second. The cost per ticket depends on the rank you are betting on. The cost per C-rank ticket is 100 gil, B-rank is 200 gil, A-rank is 300 gil, and S-rank is 500 gil. However note that until you become a jockey in disc two you can only bet on C-rank. I have the most success betting on chocobos using the following method. First I pick the three chocobos that are most likely to win. There are a number of different factors that go into this, but I usually look to see which three chocobos have the best/highest combination of speed and stamina. Then I select the three tickets that correspond to the three chocobos. For example if numbers 3, 5 and 6 have the best stats, then select cards 3-5, 3-6, and 5-6. You can select one or two, but selecting three provides the best chance of winning. Even so, there is no guarantee you will win, but this will improve your chances. Remember I said there may be other factors involved too. Sometimes the jockeys on the chocobos are stupid and wear out the chocobo too early. Sometimes one of the chocobos gets caught up in the bunched up chocobos and just can't make its move. Sometimes a chocobo will get distracted. Sometimes ... well you get the picture. Point is this is not the easiest thing to do, and as far as I can tell there is no real way to predict who will win (I have made extensive notes). Try it yourself and you will see. I'm sure there are other betting techniques as well so use the one that works best for you. If you're reading this then you probably need some help so give my technique a try. The only time you really need to bet on the races is early in the game if you want to win GP so you can fight in the Battle Arena to win BP to trade for really good prizes (especially Omnislash).

Chocobo Racing
Explain how to register for the race (talk to esther in disc two after you have the highwind), which chocobos you can race (only ones in stable or can you race ones in corral too - I think only ones in stable as they have to be named and you don't name until you send from corral to the stable), etc. The trick to successful racing is not only in your racing technique but in your breeding technique as well. Of course you should be aware of the basics of racing: use Square-button to speed up and O-button to slow down; don't speed up so much that you wear your chocobo out too quickly; and hold R1/R2/L1/L2 to keep your stamina meter up. However, when you are breeding your chocobos for racing there is something to be aware of as well (aside from the basic info above). Before breeding chocobos, buy plenty of greens to max out their stats and race them at the Gold Saucer to get them to the highest level possible. This seems to result in a better chocobo upon breeding (i.e. more speed and stamina as well as control) which means you can win more races.
