HISTORY:
In
1930, a group of young golfers left the Launceston Golf Club and formed a golf
course on the railway flats near Hoblers Bridge. This course was opened on
September 27th 1930 and was called Riverside Golf Club.
The area proved
unsatisfactory and the club was transferred to land behind Mowbray Race Course (Janefield
Estate) where the club opened its new course on May 21st 1932. The
ladies met and formed an Associates Club on 28th July 1932 while the
Club’s first Men’s Pennant win was recorded on 24th July 1932
against Longford. Transport was a major problem in those days, so after an offer
to lease 50 acres of land on the Riverside flats from Mr. S.B Freeland was
received, it was decided to move to that area, and the Riverside Golf Club’s new
course was first played on 21st April, 1934.
A number of Members decided not to move to
Riverside and stayed on to form the Mowbray Golf Club, and to improve the course
so that in April, 1935 it was reported that both Members and visitors were
enthusiastic in their praise of progress made in preparation of the course. Mr
G.D. Wise, subsequently a Life Member, was Course Curator, and reports appeared
about the enthusiasm and hard work of Members, a trait that has remained with
the Club to this day.
During the 1950’s there
was a strong move by Members towards 18 holes, but it was not until two
successful years of pea farming surplus land adjacent to Pinkie Farm Creek, that
there were sufficient funds in hand to encourage Members to take the plunge and
extend to 18 holes. The redeveloped course consisted of 16 new greens and as
many new fairways and designed by renowned course architect, Mr. H.V. Morcom.
The 18-hole Championship course was officially opened on 21st March
1964. Club President during this period was Mr. Eric J. Scott while Director in
charge of the course was Mr. Max J. Eiszele.
As had been anticipated,
an increase in Membership resulted while the flow of members to other 18 hole
courses ceased, so that it was not long before the existing Club House
facilities were inadequate. During 1974 plans were prepared for a new Club House
and after considering at length various sites and proposals building was
commenced in early February 1975. The new Club House was constructed on a
sub-contract basis with a site supervisor, day labour, working bees and Mr. Alan
M. Hollingsworth Director in charge of Construction with Mr. Stan D. Clark his
assistant.
This combination proved an
excellent team and the final cost of Club House, surrounds and furnishings was
$243,000, an immense saving on original estimates and quotations in excess of
$300,000. The Club House was officially opened by the Club President, Mr.
Lindsay R. Wastell, on 25th October, 1975, culminating the dreams and
hard work of Club Members for 43 years of having a Championship course and first
class facilities.
Renovations and well
planned improvements to both the Course and Club House have continued over the
years, including upgrading to a fully automatic watering system, which has
proven to be an outstanding success for the Club, the construction to a new
workshop and Professional premises in 1992 and resealing of the Car Park and
Club House redevelopment during 1997, have further complemented the Club’s
facilities making one of Tasmania’s leading Golf Clubs. The Club House has a
superb outlook over the course and can adequately seat 120-130 guests for a sit
down dinner. An ample dance floor is available plus there is a small stage for a
Band or alternate musical requirements. The Club also features full audio, CD,
video and Sky Channel communication services for the benefit of Members, guests
and visitors.
In 1998 the Committee of
Management approved the extension of the Club Bar area which also saw the
addition of a TAB / private function room while the Club is also an accredited
Taskeno outlet – the only Golf Club in Tasmania to offer such amenities for
Members & Guests. These decisions demonstrate the forward thinking of the Club
by developing and improving it’s resources to provide for Members the best
possible venue for social gatherings and associated activities together with
impressive golf course amenities.
In 1996 the Club embarked
on a 10 year plan for upgrading the Course with the initial project, the
redevelopment and refurbishment of a number of tees and surrounds, completed.
During 2002 new dams and water storage facilties have been constructed on the
Course to ensure future self sufficiency for the water resource requirements of
Members and visitors.
Members of Mowbray have
traditionally been very proud of their Club and are equally proud of their
golfing achievements in securing over 70 Northern and State Pennant Flags dating
back to 1965, which are displayed prominently within the Club House.
