Chess Odyssey Student News 2002-2003

June 2003:  Quite a few Chess Odyssey students, along with plenty of other chess aficionados of all ages and walks of life, participated in Rise-N-Fly 2003, a chess festival in downtown Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square on 6/13, sponsored by Chess For Success and City Center Parking.

April-May 2003:  Five Chess Odyssey students participated in the National Championships this year, including Ben Streb (pictured below), Blake Phillips, Avilash Cramer, Patrick Gay, and Daniel Gay (who, as a fourth grader, competed at Junior High nationals in Florida, as well as Elementary nationals in Nashville).  All achieved highly respectable results, either playing a tougher field than they did last year while continuing to hold their own, or improving on their 2002 results, or both.  A total of 10 (we miscounted it as 8 originally) trophies were earned, some of them Blitz, Bughouse or team trophies.  Links to detailed results are on our Chess News page.  Congratulations, guys!

March 2003:  The following Chess Odyssey students scored high enough in their regional tournaments to qualify for the Oregon State (Chess for Success) Scholastic Championships at Portland State University, which were held March 14-15, 2003.  Trophy results are in red.  Congratulations to EVERYBODY...we watched each one of you play your heart out, and we hope you feel as pleased with your accomplishments as we are with you!
