The philosopher Boogenhagen in Cosmo Canyon is truly aware of the nature of life.  That how, when a person dies, their soul returns to the lifestream, a mixture of all life on the planet.  The souls merge together, to be reformed into new life.  The Shin-Ra corporation have learnt how to mine this energy and turn it into Mako.  Mako is useless for the planet, and the more life force the Shin-Ra consume, the more the planet and everything on it dies.

In Cosmo Canyon, a resistance group was born.  AVALANCHE have a single mission, to stop the Shin-Ra from destroying the world.  

Avalanche consists of several members:

Barret Wallace

The tough-talking leader of the group.  A courageous and incredibly powerful man, there is nothing he cares more about than saving the planet, if only for his daughter, Marlene.

Tifa Lockheart

The intelligent and beautiful owner of Tifa's Bar, Tifa does her best to help Avalanche and save the planet.

Biggs

A quiet, hard individual.  He is an expert in electronics.  He is killed by the Shin-Ra on the Sector 7 pillar.

Jessie

A thoughtful and caring girl, Jessie's expertise are in electronics and computers, faking IDs and picking locks.  She is killed by the Shin-Ra on the Sector 7 pillar.

Wedge

Wedge suffers from an inferiority complex, believing that he has the least to offer Avalanche.  He too is killed by the Shin-Ra on the Sector 7 pillar.
