2004-12-20

Color of the day: Ivory
Incense of the day: Peony

With the waxing Moon in Aries today, it would be beneficial to work with calming, centered energy. Take a few moments to breathe deeply, and imagine you are standing beneath a waxing Moon. Feel the cool light of the Moon on your body as it begins to sink into your skin, filling your being. Give thanks for the presence of the Moon and its energy. Then ask that you might be blessed with wisdom and balance today. Allow the experience to unfold as it will, trusting that you will learn what you need to in time. Sun-Blessed Moon Water Spell
2002 Spell-A-Day
2002-08-08

Leo is ruled by the Sun, and so this New Moon protects, revitalizes, inspires, and renews all that it touches. To tap into the combined power of Sun and Moon, fill a glass bowl with distilled water. Place it in direct sunlight, extending the fore and middle fingers of your right hand, and make the sign of the equal-armed cross over the water. This is a symbol of the powers of the four directions. Wait one hour, then make the sign over the water again. Wait another hour, and repeat. The water will have received the Sun’s energy for a total of three hours. It is now thrice blessed! Use it to purify you, your house, or anything in your possession that may be contaminated with negative energy.

Magical Bath Ritual
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-05-28

A magical bath is perfect for the stress of today. To take one, you will need a candle, incense and an incense burner or tray, and some salt (preferably sea salt). Give your tub a quick rinse, and start filling it with warm water. When the tub is as full as you like it, touch the surface of the water and say:

Blessed be the water.

Then put a little salt in your hand, touch the salt with your other hand, saying:

Blessed be the earth.

Toss the salt in the bath water, stir it three times clockwise. Light the candle, hold it over the bath and say:

Blessed be the fire.

Lastly, light the incense, and say:

Blessed be the air.

Put the candle and incense in some safe place in the bathroom, get in the tub, and enjoy.

Halloween Spell
2001 Spell-A-Day
2001-10-31

For many witches throughout the world, Halloween is an ideal time to magically do away with weaknesses. The Celts of old, for instance, on Samhain slaughtered all livestock that were too weak to live through the coming winter. Using a quill pen and dragon’s blood ink, write upon a piece of parchment the weaknesses you wish to be rid of. As you concentrate on your intent, crumple up the paper in your “power hand” and toss it into a fire or set it ablaze by holding it above the flame of a black candle. Place it into a fireproof container such as a cast iron cauldron, and as the parchment burns away into ashes, so too shall your weaknesses be consumed by the flames of magic.

Autumn Balancing Spell
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-10-15

Autumn is a time of balance, when light and dark are equal. The sign of Libra also governs balance, along with matters of cooperation. Remember that every story has two sides. When you find yourself confronted with a controversial issue, or when you get into an argument with a friend, Libra energy can help. One thing you can do to tap into this energy at this time is make a talisman that will focus this power. Start by lighting two candles—one blue and one yellow. Hold a coin between them, spinning it in your fingers so light from each candle falls on it. Then say:

Planet of judgment,
Balance the scales;
Bring a compromise
That never fails.
Carry the coin when you need help seeing another’s viewpoint.

Using Bay for Protection Spell
2004 Spell-A-Day
2004-03-02

Color of the day: Red
Incense of the day: Gardenia

The bay laurel leaf, associated with the element of fire, has long been cherished by Witches as
a symbol for consecration, protection, and healing. Kitchen Witches use it whole to season stews, soups, and sauces with prosperity, love, and protection. Note that bay leaves should be removed from the dish before serving; if ingested whole, they cause indigestion. Bay may also be used
as an herbal element of protection in dream sachets and medicine bags. Hang a bay laurel wreath in your kitchen or near your back door. Write a protection charm on a large bay leaf, and tuck it beneath your mattress or into your wallet. Evoke the power of bay by saying:

May the fire of bay
protect me by love,
not by fear.

Dream Job Spell
2004 Spell-A-Day
2004-05-13

Color of the day: Turquoise
Incense of the day: Sandalwood

May 13 is the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. She can be petitioned for protection, for help with adversarial relationships, and for release from bondage. When you are in the wrong job, for instance, this is a bondage situation. You are afraid to leave because you are shackled by your need to make a
living. However, by remaining in the bad situation, you are drained of everything you need to sustain and nurture the rest of your life. Every day you stay in a negative work environment you lose a piece of
yourself. Trust me on this—I know whereof I speak. Thankfully, today is the day to ask Our Lady of Fatima to intervene for help to get yourself back to the path to your dream job. Dress a white candle with uncrossing oil. Ask Our Lady of Fatima to guide you toward the best possible work situation, which will then release you from your current situation. After all, you’d like a bit of an overlap as financial protection. Then, visualize your dream job. Daydream as though you already have the job. Break down the job search into small steps. Do you need to take classes to gain new skills? Where can you network and meet people in the profession that interests you? Is there a volunteer or part-time position in the organization that will help you make this transition? Ask the Lady for her guidance, listen to her response, and then take action to craft the life you’ve dreamed about.

Mother Earth Herb Garden Spell
2002 Spell-A-Day
2002-05-12

Taurus is a feminine, earthy sign; therefore, this Mother’s Day New Moon is the perfect time to honor our Mother Earth with a herb garden spell. Begin by collecting some or all of the following seeds: aloe, beans (all varieties), burdock, catnip, elder, feverfew, mallow, myrtle, rose, sorrel, spearmint, and thyme. These herbs are sacred to Venus, the planetary ruler of Taurus, and they have medicinal benefits too! Plant the seeds outdoors, or in clay pots, using organic potting soil. Dedicate your herb garden to Mother Earth. Sow some copper coins in the soil as an Earth offering, so your herbs will grow strong. Place a green candle by your herbs in her honor, light it, and express your gratitude for all she has given you.

Water Meditation
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-04-13

Today is the annual Buddhist water festival. Water that bathed the Buddha statues is saved and thrown on the faithful to cleanse them of evil spirits. Take a small box of baking soda and two cups of sea salt, and add them to warm bath water. Play meditation or temple bell music, and burn a new white candle. As you slip into the bath, let the warm water engulf you. Visualize your worries, your guilt and self-criticism, and all your frustrations fall away from you into the water. Feel how much lighter and freer you feel as the water gently laps around you. Stay in the bath as long as you feel comfortable.

Sacred Water Spell
2002 Spell-A-Day
2002-03-30

Folk legends associate goddesses and other ethereal beings with springs, rivers, and wells. In ancient Rome, coins and other offerings were left at wells and pools. It is still believed that the healing power of water is amplified at certain times of the year, particularly Beltane, and pilgrims travel to sacred waters sites all over the world. But it is not necessary to travel the world to connect with healing water. A spot in the woods or a small water hole in your own backyard can serve as a sacred place to call on water spirits. Offer a coin, some wine or bread, and say: “Like flowing water, may my life follow its course. Like healing water, may my soul find its purpose.”

Moon Water Spell
2004 Spell-A-Day
2004-12-23

Color of the day: Crimson
Incense of the day: Vanilla

After sunset tonight, when the Moon is up, take a bottle or other container you can close, and fill it full of water, preferably from a well or other natural source. You can use bottled spring water if there is no safe natural source of water nearby. Put the open container of water outside, and set it where the light of the Moon will shine on it. Ask the Goddess to bless the water with her light. Leave the container there as long as the Moon is up, then close the container carefully. Keep it to use in all rituals and spells that require water. You can do this every month at the Full Moon to have a supply of blessed water on hand.

Irish Charm for Protection
2004 Spell-A-Day
2004-03-16

Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Juniper

Winter has weakened its icy grip, yet March winds howl like the Irish Bean Sidhe, the wailing woman of the hills. Known commonly as the banshee, this Celtic death spirit is thought to haunt the fairy hills and knolls, keening her death cry into the wind. Her flowing hair and robes create a formidable image. Hearing her wail portends a death. Make an Irish charm of protection tonight. Gather a green candle, a plate, a four-leaf clover (or its image), and four drops of rosemary oil. Melt the candle wax to make a coin-sized puddle on the plate. As it hardens, press in the clover, add the oil, and shape a charm. As you mold, infuse it with protection energy, saying:

Love conquers fear.

Growing Love Spell
2002 Spell-A-Day
2002-05-10

To make a love grow, start by mixing crushed rose petals with water. Heat this in a pot without boiling every day, stirring clockwise and imagining love coming to you. Once the water has mostly evaporated—usually about four days—a clay will form. Fashion this clay into heart shapes, and allow it to dry. Plant these rose hearts under rose bushes and say:

As this rose blooms,
So will love come to me.
As this rose grows,
So will love grow for me.

Carry a rose heart with you always, and remember to tend to your garden and your heart.

Valentine Love Spell
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-02-14

It all starts with two red candles and a small piece of chocolate. Light the candles and eat the chocolate just before reciting this verse:

Candles glow and love grow,
Fill my heart with sacred play.
Love be near and love be clear,
Open hearts so they can hear.
Expressions of love, joy, and trust,
Not confused by want and lust,
Magnify my love to see, The heart whose love is meant for me.
Love’s great beauty, Love’s great truth
Is in my heart and spirit too.
Open my heart to the one for me;
Open my eyes so I can see.
If another heart yet waits for me,
Reveal my soul mate, whe’er he may be.
Make me wise to love as you.
Reveal my soul mate, loving and true.
Fill my true love’s mind with thoughts of me.
Happy, caring, loving, and free.
Keep me happy, cheerful and true,
Patiently awaiting my lover new.
True love will come when time is right,
May it be this very night.
If time be right, and I be prepared,
Speed my love’s journey with no time spared.
So mote it be.

Home Protection and Removal of Negativity Spell
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-07-28

If you are feeling too much negativity in your life now, inscribe the backs of four small mirrors with the runes eolh (z) and is (i). This will charge your mirrors to deflect negativity. You can invoke the divine protection of your magic mirrors whenever you need it. To effect this spell, place one mirror at each compass or directional point in your home with its reflective side facing outward. In a spray bottle, prepare a mixture of distilled water and small amounts of patchouli and lavender oils (five or six drops each). Now, extend your hands over the mixture, forming a magcial protective triangle with your thumbs and forefingers. Visualize a divine beam infusing this mixture with purifying and protective energy. Begin misting the air around the mirror you have placed at the northern point of the compass in your house. Continue misting while moving in a deosil direction toward each compass point until you have completed your circle of purification and protection.

Protection Wreath Spell
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-06-10

To create a protection wreath perfect for this day, tie sprigs of dill, garlic, and pieces of ginger root on to a wreath. To give this decoration a fancier look, accessorize with dried flowers, good luck or protection tokens or amulets, and streaming ribbons. You can attach this to the outside of your home or to your front door, or you can use it as a decorative home accessory. Be sure to burn a white candle while you are constructing your wreath. Once it is finished, hang it up and chant:

Herbs of the earth,
Spirits above,
I request your powers
To protect this property.

Allow the candle to burn out on its own.

Car Protection Spell
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-02-26

To protect your car and its travelers, visually or physically cast a transparent shield around your car before you set out on any trip. Pro-ject the runic aspects of rad (r) for travel and eolh (z) for divine protection as you cast, saying:

Shield of the Goddess,
surround this car.
Keep us safe in our travels.

Place rue in the front seat of the car to aid in mental alertness, then say:

Herb of the Goddess
keep me physically alert and mentally clear.
Keep us safe always in our travels.

Always bear in mind the basic principle, “As above, so below.” That is to say, divine magic needs to be coupled with mundane common sense.

Sacred Sexuality Blessing
2004 Spell-A-Day
2004-10-19

Color of the day: Maroon
Incense of the day: Sage

To Pagans, sexuality is a sacred part of life. To honor this part of life, honor your body and your partner’s by blessing each other with the magical oil of your choice, and by placing birth control and prophylactic items on the altar before their use. Pass these too through incense smoke to charge them with power. Ask the gods to honor you as you practice responsible sex. All sex that is performed “in perfect love and perfect trust” is sacred. For remember, as it says in the Charge of the Goddess: “All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.”

Fall Equinox Spell
2004 Spell-A-Day
2004-09-22

Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Coriander

Once again the Sun’s path crosses the celestial equator, and the day and the night are now again of equal length. On the Gregorian calendar this is the first day of autumn, but on the modern Celtic calendar it is midautumn. This holiday is more commonly known by its Welsh name Mabon. Mabon means “divine youth.” It is the name of a mythic hunter hero whose story is told at this time of year. At the beginning of time, Mabon was born to the mother goddess Modron. That we only know his mother and not his father attests to the matriarchal lineage of the early Celts. The equinox marks the time when Mabon was three nights old and stolen from his crib. For the next three months, the heroes Cai and Bedwyr will search for him and ask all manner of birds and beasts for help. But, according to legend, it is only the salmon who can give them direction. On Yule, the heroes retrieve the divine child by freeing him from a prison in Gloucester. Like Apollo, Mabon is a hunter with a bow and a musician with a harp. He is a Sun god. Mabon represents the Sun that is waning in strength during this quarter of the year and that will begin to return only after the solstice. The waning of the light is frightening and depressing, and it is necessary for our own sake to use magic at this time to help in the quest for Mabon. The strongest act of magic that one can do at this time is to participate in the celebrations of the yearly cycle. As one integrates the yearly cycle deep into one’s unconscious, serenity and confidence are gained. This is the peace that comes from knowing and accepting that the light will return when it is time.

Celebrate the Goddess Ritual
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-03-25

Some ancient calendars regarded this date as the Spring Equinox. By some accounts this is the day Attis, the lover of the Mother Goddess, was resurrected. On this day Christians honor the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Therefore, on this day of rebirth and feminine power, you should use the following ritual to energize yourself for spring and connect you with the Goddess. On your altar, place spring flowers and light a cream-colored candle. Before these place a small dish of soil, and say:

Caring Earth Mother, guardian of house and home;
I honor you as Maiden, Mother, and Crone,
As the Earth is plowed and life begins anew.
I ask for your blessing in all that I do.

Then, toast the Goddess with sweet white wine or grape juice.

Earth Day Ritual
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-04-22

The original Earth Day was celebrated on the Vernal Equinox in 1969. Now April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day by various groups and communities around the world. Begin the day with this ritual, and then go out and do something for the environment.

The Earth is your home,
It needs your care.
The environment begs:
Take care, take care.

Nurture me and clean my rivers,
Clean my land and sea.
I give you life and food to eat;
I give you shelter and spirit relief.

Be gentle with me,
Take care what you do,
Or I will die,
And so will you.

Dedicate yourself to be,
A healing force for what’s given to you.
Your course is set, my duty clear,
Recycle and reuse all the year.

I am the Earth,
Bearer of generations yet to be.
Bless my body by planting a tree,
I promise it will nourish thee.

I bless all creatures With water pure.
Cease your pollution,
so all may endure.

Bless my environment with your love and will,
I can be healthy still.

Each Day I give life to thee,
So dedicate this day to healing me.

So mote it be.

Blessed be pleasure, love, and laughter.

Venus Victrix Ritual
2003 Spell-A-Day
2003-08-12

Today is the day ancient Romans celebrated a festival to Venus called Venus Victrix, or “Venus Victorious.” Venus is the well-known goddess of love and beauty, and on this day love and beauty should reign. Today would be an excellent day for a tarot reading about relationships. Lay out three cards left to right on your left to represent yourself. Skip a space, and, continuing left to right, lay out three more to represent the other person in this relationship. Now lay three more above the two groups and in the center to form a bridge. This represents the interaction between both of you. After you have used this reading to analyze the strengths and weakness of your relationship, end with three more cards of advice.
