Brief History:

What you are watching or going to watch or hope to someday watch is Gundam Wing.  Even if you are new to Gundam or Mecha anime in general, I’m betting that you have heard of Transformers, Marcross or Robotech.  Well, those three series got the hint from the original Gundam series and movies.  In 1979 the first Gundam was made and since then several other Gundam series have come out, Gundam Wing being just one.  For more information I suggest http://www.gundamproject.com/ ,
http://www.gundamwing.org/ or http://www.gundamofficial.com/timeline/index.html.

Now, in the world of Gundam there are several time lines, one being UC and the other AC.  When I first started watching I didn’t understand this and I was constantly asking myself, “where are the newtypes?”  Well, now I know better.  And you’re about to.

First understand that Gundam Wing has nothing to do with the UC time line.  Even the Gundam alloy has a different name.  If you know something about UC timeline, just throw it out for now.  Yes, there are character similarities if you know where to look and there are several web pages out there willing to point this out in great detail.  Here, we’re talking about Gundam Wing and AC.

When colonies were establish in space, AC (after colony) started.  While the Earth was plagued with war, civil strife and generally bad things, the colonies enjoyed peace and quiet.  The Federation (or United Earth Sphere Alliance is you are a dubber) was established and a forced peace was put into place on Earth.  The Federation, under the guise of protecting peace, seized control of the colonies.

A man named Heero Yuy (not to be confused with the lead character) lobbied for autonomy for the space colonies from the Federations control.  He advocated non-violence and peace (reminds me of Martin Luther King, Jr.).  In AC 175 he was assassinated, putting an end to any hope and throwing the colonies into despair and chaos.

From the time AC 175 to AC 195 a team of scientist (know as the five Gundam Scientists) are working on a method to solve this problem.  They are on different colonies and are creating five mobile suits made of Gundanium Alloy (which can only be made in space).  There are doujinshi which follow the time before the pilots become pilots; I’m not going to go into it.  But, if you are interested here is a site with the doujinshi translated: https://www.angelfire.com/ak4/miewthgw/index.html.  In AC 195 Operation M or Operation Meteor starts and five Gundams are sent to Earth to destroy the Federation and free the colonies.

This is where our story begins. . .
