Blurred Lines

She cowered in the corner, all of her bravery she had once used to tell an angel he didn’t exist gone.  Her chest hurt, where the hand had come through and grabbed her, pulling her here.  Here wasn’t pleasant, a simple metal worked cage.  She could hear things scuttling across the floor, things moaning, things thrashing, things just moving.  She would have thrown up, if she hadn’t already done that when she had arrived.  Then she heard footsteps, coming closer.  She didn’t move, hoped who ever owned the feet would continue to walk, but as the footsteps got closer she realized that she was going to have a visitor.

And when she arrived she did not disappoint the captive.

“Don’t believe in angels?  Don’t believe in magic?  Well then my dear, you should wake up from this awful little dream.”

The captive didn’t reply, all of her bravado gone and now she wished to cling to the side of the cage and cling to what was left of her life.

“Oh come come on, surly you have so witty responses.  Where is your mouth?  You can tell an angel who stands ready to loop off your head that he doesn’t exist, that the world could not possibly have creatures like him; but when a simple woman comes to offer you power you cower in a corner.  Perhaps you aren’t the one.”

The woman, turned away, counting to herself as she slowly walked away.  /She’ll either get the point by the time I reach ten or she isn’t worth the effort./

The captive waited till about five before she cried out, “wait!  Don’t leave me here!  What did I do?  I don’t understand.”

The woman turned on her heel and smiled at the captive.  “You don’t have to understand, you just have to be useful.  Which, you already are.”

The door to the cage opened and the captive timidly stepped out.  “There is no reason to be afraid.  No one is going to hurt you while you are in these walls.”

“Are you evil?”

“My dear, this isn’t a fairy tale or a story book, the lines aren’t so clearly drawn.  I can say this much, I would never fear the black heart, because I have no heart myself.”  The woman smiled and beckon the captive to follow her with a black hand and an evil twisted grin.
