CD Now
The principals may have regarded the famous Beano cover
album merely as a representation of their live work, but this
album had as much to do with the British invasion of
America's musical dominance as the Beatles or the Stones.
Mayall willingly assumed the mantle of father of British blues
that he had taken from Alexis Korner. Clapton was a blues
purist who discovered other demons to drive his ambition,
even if he could only emulate originals such as Freddie King,
Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Jimi Hendrix. Some maintain that
Clapton has never played as well again, notwithstanding his
current godlike status. Mayall has pursued a less notable but
satisfying career, confident that this early achievement can
never be bettered - by anyone.

Reviews
Musician
"...Clapton blazes with a maturity beyond his years, and his
tone pierces and rumbles with a freedom he's rarely evoked
since....shows how even the greats can be elevated by the right
rhythm section..."
Musician 4/95, p.76
Down Beat
4.5 Stars - Very Good/Excellent - "...Clapton displays
enough control and buoyant enthusiasm in his playing to
justify the scrawling of `Clapton is God' on London
walls....Mayall, meantime, explores the upper range of his
pale voice with urgency and conviction..."
Down Beat 8/95, p.55
Living Blues
"...Devoted to hard blues, John Mayall's Blues Breakers were
the perfect launching pad for Clapton....The album sounds as
startling today as it did back in `66, due in large part to
MFSL's audiophile production..."
Living Blues 1-2/96, p.95
