THE BEATLES (generally known as "The White Album"
because of its cover) was a sprawling two-record set,
highlighting the distinct personalities in the group. With the
four Beatles playing like session men on each other's songs,
the making of the album was fraught with tension. John
Lennon's songs included a bitter take on people who read too
much into the Beatles' lyrics ("Glass Onion"), reflections on
loneliness and alienation ("Yer Blues", "I'm So Tired") and
the massive sound collage "Revolution 9."
George Harrison's songs offered black humor ("Piggies") and
tender sadness ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps", with Eric
Clapton on guitar). Paul McCartney provided both light, lyric
songs ("Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Honey Pie"), and rockers
("Back In The U.S.S.R.", the explosive "Helter Skelter").
Ringo Starr made his solo songwriting debut with "Don't Pass
Me By" and sang the album closer, "Good Night."

In their later recordings, {the Beatles} largely eschewed the elaborate arrangements and instrumentation of 1967 in favor of returning to the simpler sound of the four-piece band. They did not, however, return to the ensemble style of 1964, rather serving as backup to one of four leaders, depending on who wrote the song. On this sprawling double album, already apparent individual styles gain ascendency; likewise, musical styles are not so much combined as separated out in pastiche form -- {the Beach Boys} pop of "Back in the USSR," the blues of "Yer Blues," the folk of "Rocky Raccoon," the hard rock of "Birthday," the schmaltzy pop of "Good Night." The musical facility is amazing but also seems near-parodic.

Reviews
CD Now
After less than 3 years in existence, and some 15 million
albums sold, GOODBYE was Cream's farewell release.
Baker, Bruce and Clapton indicated at the time that they
were burned out on the concept, the touring, the
improvisational "battles," and each other. The live cuts ("I'm
So Glad," "Politician" and "Sitting On Top Of The World")
are indicative of how the band's concert chemistry had
evolved from earlier live recordings (such as those on
WHEELS OF FIRE and LIVE CREAM, VOLUMES 1 & 2).
But what's most striking about GOODBYE is the charm and
craftsmanship of their last studio tracks, indicating that
Cream was far from played out creatively, and illustrating
how strong their songwriting skills really were. The Beatles'
influence is readily apparent on each studio track, the most
famous being Clapton's "Badge," featuring George Harrison.
Bruce's "Doin' The Scrapyard Thing," with its mixture of
funk and the English music hall, points to the directions he
would pursue on SONGS FOR A TAILOR and his other
underrated solo albums, while Baker's use of odd meters on
"What A Bringdown" anticipates "Do What You Like" on
BLIND FAITH.
American Music Guide
As the title implies, this is {Cream}'s farewell. By the time it was issued, the band had broken up. Three studio recordings that were left were coupled with extended live versions of "I'm So Glad," "Politician," and "I'm Sitting on Top of the World." The live tracks burn. {Clapton}, {Bruce,} and {Baker} each take credit for one of the studio tracks. {Clapton}'s cut, "Badge," was co-written by {George Harrison} and remains what was surely the prettiest melody to ever grace a {Cream} recording.

American Music Guide
The most interesting archival release of {the Rolling Stones} since =More Hot Rocks,= 20 years ago, and the first issue of truly unreleased material by {the Stones} from this period. And {the Stones} have some competition from {the Who,} {Taj Mahal,} and {John Lennon} on the same release.
Filmed and recorded on December 10-11, 1968 at a North London studio, =Rock & Roll Circus= has been, as much as {the Beach Boys'} =Smile,= "the one that got away" for most '60s music enthusiasts. The {Jethro Tull} sequence is the standard studio track, but the rest -- except for {the Stones'} "Salt of the Earth" -- is really live. {The Who's} portion has been out before, courtesy of various documentaries, but {Taj Mahal} playing some loud electric blues is new and great, the live {Lennon} rendition of "Yer Blues" is indispensable, and {the Stones'} set fills in lots of blanks in their history -- "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in one of two live renditions it ever got with {Brian Jones} in thelineup, "Sympathy for the Devil" in an intense run-through, "Parachute Woman" as a lost live vehicle for the band, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" as a show-stopping rocker even without its extended ending (no {Paul Buckmaster} choir), and "No Expectations" as their first piece of great live blues since "Little Red Rooster." It's a must-own, period.

This IS a fake, and is merely a BBC session recording of "I'm A Loser" with crowd noise dubbed onto it. The Beatles only recorded two versions
of "I'm A Loser" for the BBC. The first one on 17th November 1964 for
"Top Gear", and the second on 26th May 1965 for their last BBC radio show,
"The Beatles invite you to take a Ticket to Ride". Now it is easy to
identify the later one because of Johns change of lyric to
"beneath this wig I am wearing a tie", so that leaves only the 17th
November 1964 take. This 17th November 1964 take is found on the
official "Live at the BBC" double CD set disc 2 track 19 and on

The early Zappa albums were treasured by the few and totally
misunderstood by the majority. The brilliant satire of the Sgt.
Pepper cover should have garnered extra sales, but no.
Zappa's scathing wit homed in on modern middle-class
America and the west coast hippies. Nineteen vignettes of
avant garde, doo-wop, some regular pop music and a lot of
hilarious dialogue, which was so hip it has never dated. Zappa
made us confront the obvious, and the results were alarming.
These issues are best demonstrated on 'What's The Ugliest
Part Of Your Body', 'Bow Tie Daddy' and 'The Idiot Bastard
Son'.

Was it that Zappa's music was so far ahead of its time, or was
it just not what we thought a weirdo genius like him should be
doing? Either way, since his death, his stature as a serious
composer has grown. Lumpy Gravy missed most by a mile
because it was the first of Zappa's 'challenging' orchestral
pieces, and not what his audience had come to expect.
Performed by the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony
Orchestra & Chorus, it was a lengthy instrumental suite
broken up by equally 'challenging' dialogue. On the back
cover, Frank looks out and asks, 'is this phase 2 of We're Only
In It For The Money?'. No, we don't think so.
