CD Now
By 1975, Eric Clapton was coming off the smash success of
461 OCEAN BOULEVARD. If his last album was a cathartic
release after coming out of a battle with drug addiction, then
THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD was the first record
where Clapton could catch his breath. Having become
enamored with reggae after riding Bob Marley's "I Shot The
Sheriff" to the top of the charts around the world, E.C. chose
to record in Kingston, Jamaica. Although recordings of
Clapton with Peter Tosh first surfaced over a decade later on
the CROSSROADS box set, Slowhand successfully dipped his
toe into the reggae pool by way of the loping beat of "Don't
Blame Me," along with an infectious take on "Swing Low
Sweet Chariot." (He even managed to add an impressive
Jamaican patois to his vocal style).
Elsewhere, Clapton returned to the roots of American music
via straight-forward gospel ("We've Been Told [Jesus Is
Coming Soon])"and blues (Elmore James' "The Sky Is
Crying" and Mary McCready's "Singin' The Blues.")
Clapton's bypassing of electric guitar for some vastly
underrated dobro playing turned his self-penned "Pretty Blue
Eyes" and "High" into gems often overlooked in his enormous
canon.

CD Now
Released in the same year as 1975's THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD
, E.C. WAS HERE is a live album short on
content but long in presentation. Backed by his usual
mid-70's studio cohorts (George Terry, Jamie Oldaker,
Yvonne Elliman, Marcy Levy, etc.), Clapton ignored his
then-current material off THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD
and 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD, instead choosing to explore
his immediate,
post-Cream era along with some extended, old favorites.
"Presence Of The Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home"
were retrieved from Blind Faith's sole album and both are
infused with a subtle, spiritual feeling of someone who's
emerged from a long period of sorrow.
The remainder of this live document of mysterious origin
features Clapton finding his way through material by Robert
Johnson ("Ramblin' On My Mind) and Charles Brown
("Driftin' Blues") using a laconic drawl and a quietly
effective style of playing that his 70's work became known
for. Of particular note is a rousing version of "Further On Up
The Road," which quickly became a Clapton live staple for
the remainder of the 70's.

Reviews -
CD Now DESIRE was the studio realization of the Rolling Thunder
revue's sound. The musicians involved in this mid-'70s Dylan
project were more than a backup band; they forged a
distinctive musical vision, loose and swirling, the perfect aural
equivalent of the traveling gypsy/carnival image they affected
onstage. Drummer Howie Wyeth, who possessed an uncannily
sympathetic ear for accompanying singer-songwriters, and
violinist Scarlet Rivera, built their careers on the foundation
of the Rolling Thunder band.
Many critics balked at Dylan's lyrical collaborations with
Jacques Levy on this album, but their reservations were just
glorified xenophobia. Levy's flowing, colloquial style suited
Dylan's music and delivery perfectly, and the two produced
several gems. "Isis" is an exotic tale of intrigue that turns out
to be a unique love story. "Hurricane" breathlessly tells the
true story of Ruben Carter, a boxer framed for murder and
acquitted years after DESIRE's release. It still stands as one of
Dylan's most exciting, emotional tunes.

Notes -
The CD Booklet details this for the song 'Abandoned Love':
Recorded in New York City 7/75 - Previously Unreleased.
'Abandoned Love'> began as a solo song Dylan performed in the early days of Rolling Thunder. Cut for DESIRE, it was eventually left off the album in favor of 'Joey'.
The informal beginning of the track, with Dylan still showing the song to the band, proves the statement once made by a friend and sometime session mate Eric Clapton.
"When you rehearse with Dylan," he said, "you listen very hard and watch his hands for the changes. It may be your only take."
It does NOT say that Eric Clapton is on this song. Room for debate on this one. -JCH.
Another intersting note:
There is a song also entitled 'Abandoned Love' on the George Harrison album - COMPLETE RARITIES Volume 1. I don't know if it's the same Dylan song, or if George is possibly on this session. Hmmm...- JCH
CD Now -
BIOGRAPH features 53 digitally remastered Bob Dylan
recordings spanning the years 1961-1981, 18 of which were
previously unissued.
This three-disc set was Columbia's first attempt to anthologize
Dylan in the box-set format. Unlike the later BOOTLEG SERIES,
though, BIOGRAPH does double duty as treasure trove of
previously unreleased material and greatest hits package. From
"Tangled Up in Blue" to 'I Want You,' most of Dylan's FM radio
staples are here, painting a clear historical picture of both his
development as an artist and his transformation from
rabble-rousing underdog to popular culture icon.
The real gems here are, naturally, the previously unreleased
songs. Some, like 'Isis' and the surrealistic epic "Visions of
Johanna are Dylan album cuts heard here in revelatory live
versions. Some are Dylan's version of songs he wrote that were
recorded by others ('Mighty Quinn,' a hit for Manfred Mann, and
'I'll Keep It With Mine,' recorded by Nico and others). The most
striking tunes on BIOGRAPH are the ones that had never been
released before in any form, like 'Mixed Up Confusion' and the
whimsical 'Jet Pilot.'
All Music Guide
A five-LP, three-CD retrospective of Dylan's first 20 years of recording, with an emphasis on presenting some of the mountain of unreleased songs that began leaking out unofficially in the late '60s. The only reason this massive, brilliantly executed album is not listed as an essential pick is its expense -- in fact, it's not a bad place to start in trying to appreciate the whole of Dylan's achievement.
