Eighteen

Zac stood calmly by the stone wall. Okay, so he was beyond nervous and his hands were sweating horribly. But he didn’t have to admit to it!

"Zac," Jakob started slowly, "If you don't calm down and relax, I'm going to seriously hurt you, buddy." He warned lightly.

Turning to give a shaky smile, Zac gave an unsteady laugh. "I can't help it." He mumbled through clenched teeth. "I'm so strung out, I think I'm gonna be sick." He managed to get out before leaning over reflexively.

"Oh God." Jakob said jumping up and putting his hand on his friends' back. He started laughing quietly, "You know, she is just a girl."

Zac kept bent, "No!" He muttered hoarsely. "She's not just a girl."

Jakob smiled and let his friend catch his breath and fight him.

"She's sweet and she's funny and she's nice," He hung his head in shame. "And I can't say enough nice things about her, and I have no clue as to how I'm going to make up yesterday to her."

"Ever think about like… I don't know, giving her an explanation?" Jakob asked dryly, as they were able to sit back down on the wall.

Zac looked up at him, "Besides the fact that it sounds like a load of crap," He commented sardonically, "No."

"I think you're stressing just way too much on this." Jakob decided nodding, "You're not even giving her the chance to be understanding."

"Jakob, I'm can't even give myself the chance to explain this to her without puking at the moment."

He laughed, "That would certainly make an impression."

"What, a moronic spaz?" Zac asked darkly.

Hearing the bell ring, they both stood. "Come on, Zac." Jakob chided as he clapped his hand on his back. "Nothing is ever as bad as it seems."

"You're right." He sighed, "Sometimes it can be infinitely worse." He grumbled.

Jakob gave him a look, "Be positive."

"You mean, lie to myself." Zac corrected.

"No, be an optimist."

Zac chuckled sarcastically, "Lying to myself." He repeated.

"Well, you can see it as that." Jakob replied smiling.

"Because it is like that." Zac responded caustically.

They walked in silence as they entered the building and upon turning the corner down their hall Jakob opened his mouth to talk.

"Mechelle." Zac squeaked in shock.

Her head tilted up, before lowering. "Hey, Zac." She murmured before walking off quickly.

Zac turned to his friend helplessly.

Jakob held his hand up, "You don't have to say anything," He murmured, "I could be deaf, blind, and dumb and still know she's not happy with you."

He groaned in frustration, "Damn Ike!" He cursed angrily, his eyes following her fast retreating form. "Damn her," He sighed in defeat. "And most of all… damn me." With that said, he walked off to his classroom.

Jakob stayed in his spot, standing still and sighed himself. "Yes," He whispered. "Damn you, Zac."

"I never wanted to get into this, but I will help you… somehow."
