- Greenlandic Rock Band

A Rock Band in the Arctic? Is there such a thing? Do they have electicity (in the igloo...)? A lot of people think of Greenland as a sometimes dark, extremely cold and freezing wilderness. Eskimo people lives in igloo and and hunting polar bears.

This is not the entire truth, though. Greenland is also sunbathing, sweet green mountains coloured by flowers and visited by Arctic animals: Greenland is Iceberg and clean, deep blue waters.

The people of the North of Greenland make their living from fishing and hunting and working in offices with computers like in Europe and in the South of Greenland sheep farming is the main source of income.

The traditional Greenlandic music is the drum dance. But as the missionaries came to Greenland in the 17th century, the drum dance was forbidden, the angakkogs were baptized, and the tradition slowly died out. And the whale hunters from Europe brought instruments like accordion and violin and dance rhythms like polka to Greenland.

Today, European polka music is still played with a distinct Greenlandic flavour. Some decades after the whale hunters, radio and TV brought jazz and rock to Greenland!

Many people are now engaged in political development of the country as well as being engaged in modern Greenland society, supporting schools, kindergartens, hospitals, community offices and political activities, Greenlandic radio and television, sportsclubs, shops, museums, traffic and airports, restaurants, cafés, Greenlandic music etc.

People in Greenland watching Television programs from USA and North Europe like news, music programs many more. In local store you can buy European, Asian, American foots, wear, furniture and magazines like Guitar Player & Rolling Stone and other music related stuff like new CDs from the US and European charts....

TAAQ is the most famous Greenlandic rockgroup of the 90's and started in the early 90's formed around Thomas Lange. Their rock love ballads may be found in all teenage hearts and they play a grandoise rock music with lots of electric guitar too also to be heard on, and the voice of the lead singer Knud Mathiassen is known and loved by everyone. TAAQ is inspire by Deep-Purple and Rainbow and they texts and tunes have had a very im portant influence on 90´s Greenlandic youth and musicians.

About 1st & 2nd CD

On August 1th 1996 Melos Records released the first TAAQ Album called Erseqqarissoq ("obvious"). That broke the Greenlandic market and partially ensured that TAAQ was the best selling act in the Greenland in 1996.

Lead singer Knud Mathiassen sings with passion in Greenlandic language on nine songs. There's a nice fuzz-quitar sound throughout this well-recorded CD.

The 10 original songs on this CD are well known in Greenland. This in one of the great Greenlandic recordings presenting talents from the town Uummannaq.

The original album was recorded between March 1th and March 19th 1996 in Nuuk, Greenland by Steen Lynge at Melos Mobile Studio and released by Melos Records.

In 1997 TAAQ, put out their second album named "Isaavissuaq" ("The Gate") released by Sermit Records this spring.

"Erseqqarissoq" was a popular hit on radio stations across Greenland from the first CD. On their new CD Taaq has recorded that number in English, with guest female singer Kathrine from California.

This production was recorded at Sermit Records in Greenland, and mixed at Puk Recording Studios in Denmark.
