Review:
CD Now
As the '80s drew to a close, Clapton's lifestyle included
fraternizing with models and wearing designer suits to go with
stylish haircuts. Amid all this jet-setting, Clapton released
JOURNEYMAN, an album that found his songwriting
involvement limited to cuts co-written with Foreigner's Mick
Jones ("Bad Love") and Robert Cray ("Old Love.")
Respected producer Russ Titelman twisted knobs as a number
of famous guests contributed to the creative process. Old
friend George Harrison contributed guitar, harmonies and a
song ("Run So Far") while Clapton's band from AUGUST
(Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East, Phil Collins) are also
present.
Although the slick production of most of Clapton's '80s work
is evident, his passion is far from lacking. "Running On
Faith" finds Slowhand looking deep inside himself as a gospel
choir chimes away in the background. On Ray Charles' "Hard
Times" Clapton reminds listeners that heartache is around
the corner. The sweet nothings whispered in "Lead Me On"
are made that much sweeter by the harmonies of Cecil and
Linda Womack. E.C. also manages to have a ball with a
shuffling "Hound Dog" and a rollicking take on Bo Diddley's
"Before You Accuse Me."
All-Music Guide
For most of the '80s, Eric Clapton seemed rather lost, uncertain of whether he should return to his blues roots or pander to AOR radio. By the mid-'80s, he appeared to have made the decision to revamp himself as a glossy mainstream rocker, working with synthesizers and drum machines. Instead of expanding his audience, it only reduced it. Then came the career retrospective Crossroads, which helped revitalize his career, not only commercially, but also creatively, as Journeyman -- the first album he recorded after the success of Crossroad -- proved. Although Journeyman still suffers from an overly slick production, Clapton sounds more convincing than he has since the early '70s. Not only is his guitar playing muscular and forceful, his singing is soulful and gritty. Furthermore, the songwriting is consistently strong, alternating between fine mainstream rock originals ("Pretending") and covers ("Before You Accuse Me," "Hound Dog"). Like any of Clapton's best albums, there is no grandstanding to be found on Journeyman -- it's simply a laidback and thoroughly engaging display of Clapton's virtuosity. On the whole, it's the best studio album he's released since Slowhand.

All-Music Guide - Biograph
Randy Crawford's initial notoriety came from her fiery vocal on "Street Life," a 1979 song that matched her with The Crusaders. It was included on the soundtrack for Burt Reynolds' film Sharky's Machine. Crawford was born in Macon and grew up in Cincinnati. She worked in clubs as a teen, accompanied by her father. Crawford was lead vocalist in a group that included bassist Bootsy Collins before touring as George Benson's opening act in 1972. Cannonball Adderley invited her to sing on his LP Big Man Crawford recorded "Don't Get Caught in Love's Triangle," a song produced by Johnny Bristol, during a short stay on the label. She soon moved to Warner Brothers, and after "Street Life," recorded and toured Europe with the Crusaders. Crawford was tabbed Most Outstanding Performer at the 1980 Tokyo Music Festival. She remained with Warner Brothers through the '80s and early '90s, but has been unable to score either a big R&B hit or major crossover smash, despite having one of the most readily identifiable voices and distinctive approaches of any contemporary female vocalist. She's been more successful overseas, particularly in England, where such singles as "Knocking on Heaven's Door," "Rainy Night in Georgia," and "Last Night at Danceland" have gotten universal acclaim.

All-Music Review
On True Colors, Cyndi Lauper began to edge her way into adult contemporary territory, but it was on her third album, A Night to Remember, that she concentrated all of her attention on becoming a self-consciously "mature" singer/songwriter. A Night to Remember doesn't work, but not because she's incapable of performing polished, well-crafted middle-of-the-road material -- "Time after Time" and "True Colors" prove that she could convincingly deliver ballads. Instead, the album is a failure because it assumes that labored arrangements and precisely detailed production are tantamount to musical sophistication. Far from sounding sophisticated, A Night to Remember is bland and tedious, with only the seductive "I Drove All Night" making a lasting impression.

All-Music Review Biograph
Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult-contemporary singers ofthe '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a #2 hit in his native U.K. (the song was a Top 20 hit in the U.S.). Between 1984 and 1990, Collins had a string of 13 straight U.S. Top Ten hits. Long before any of that happened, however, Collins was a child actor/singer who appeared as "the Artful Dodger" in the London production of Oliver! in 1964. (He also has a cameo in A Hard Day's Night, among other films.) He got his first break in music at the end of his teens, when he was chosen to be a replacement drummer in the British art-rock band Genesis in 1970. (Collins maintained a separate jazz career with the band Brand X, as well.) Genesis was fronted by singer Peter Gabriel. They had achieved a moderate level of success in the U.K. and the U.S., with elaborate concept albums, before Gabriel abruptly left in 1974. Genesis auditioned 400 singers without success, then decided to let Collins have a go. The result was a gradual simplifying of Genesis' sound and an increasing focus on Collins's expressive, throaty voice. And Then There Were Three ... went gold in 1978, and Duke was even more successful. Collins made his debut solo album Face Value in 1981, which turned out to be a bigger hit than any Genesis album. It concentrated on Collins' voice, often in stark, haunting contexts such as the piano-and-drum dirge "In the Air Tonight," which sounded like something from John Lennon's debut solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. During the '80s, Collins balanced his continuing solo work with Genesis with enormous success. In 1992, Genesis released We Can't Dance and began an extensive tour. Upon its completion, Collins released =Both Sides= in 1993, and the record became his first album not to produce a major hit singl or go multi-platinum. In 1995, he announced that he was leaving Genesis permanently. The following year, he released Dance into the Light. Although the album was a flop, its subsequent supporting tour was a success. The Hits collection followed in 1998.
