THE FRENCH EVALUATION OF THE LEISURE SURVEY
A general survey of the results:The first two types of leisure activities are largely predominant. In fact, very few of our 13 year olds choose to join a club. It may be that they are quite happy with whatever activity is available when on their own, with their family or with a group of close friends. Either they'd rather be independent or the range of leisure organisations in the country is more restricted than in the town, or both, with the notable exception of soccer associations (one in every village) and local bands sponsered by the village councils
Also remarkable is the fact that they spend as much time alone as with their family and friends.
In either of the first two groups of activities, the time spent in front of the television accounts for a quarter of the total time so that it would require seperate investigation to determine things such as the programmes in which they have a real interest.
The students surveyed can hardly be called <stay at home> with cycling, walking and shopping being favourites, and even socializing which would largely take place away from home. Each of those activities has been mentioned by at least one half of them, even though at the time of the survey, neither walking nor cycling were really seasonal. The rreason may be found in the nature of the envionment which in this area is rather both safe and pleasant.
No doubt the country-side greatly influences the orientation of leisure with activites such as mushroom gathering, fishing and hunting, even if those activites are practcied by relatively small groups of less than one quarter of the total number of participants. They are nontheless typical or the rural way of life as is for a part the habit of helping their mums and dads, for example working on the farm.
Activities Alone: In terms of the most time spent on one activity, ranking far behind television and video games though, are two groups of activities : in decreasing order cycling + videogames, both practiced by about half the teenagers surveyed, then reading + music with reading concerning only a quarter of them. Therefore the teenagers who mentioned reading as a regular pastime devote quite a lot of time to it wheras music and cycling attract more people but the average time spent on each of them is inferior.
Although drawing accounts for a small proportion of the total time spend on the group <activities alone>, it is nonetheless a fairly popular activity.
Most popular
activities in number of particapants per activity:
1. Cycling
2. Watching TV
3. Playing video-games
4. Listening to or playing music
5. Drawing
6. Reading
7. Playing with/taking care of pets
Activities with family/friends: Ranking here again far behind television, the group of the second most popular activities is composed of shopping, walking (half the total number of participants) and socialising (mentioned by fewer students but with more time devoted to it on average).
Ranking lower is a second group of three activities of a homier type : mushroom gathering, pastery making and helping parents, each one practiced roughly by one quarter of the total number of students and with the time spent on each one approaching four hours a week.
Conclusions: Obviously this is rating leisure activities by the french students follows a trend dictated by this technological age, with television and video games ranking very high. For equally obvious reasons, it also reflects the preoccupations and tastes of this age group (youngster in their early teens) as testified by their special interest in music and the decline in popularity observed concerning activities traditionally associated with earlier childhood such as caring for pets, while at the same time other activities are attracting them away from home.
Also recurrent is the influence exerted by the environment (both the natural surroundings and the rural way of life) which accounts for the popularity of such activities as walking and cycling but also for the habits of helping their parents quite often or being self-sufficient and thereby reluctant to join an organisation.
