THE IRISH EVALUATION ON OUR LEISURE SURVEY
The Irish survey (St. Augustines of Dungarvan) group of 52 spent collectively 886.75 hours on Leisure Activities Alone, an average of 17.05 hours per participant. We found out that watching T.V had overall the most participants (44) and far more time spent (405.75hrs) than any of the other activities. The most popular activities were the indoor activities such as watching television, using computers, reading and listening to music, which totalled 450.75, 109.5, 78.5, and 65.5 hours respectively. . This, overall, shows that teenagers would rather sit in front of the television than go do something physical.
The outdoor activities such as horse-riding, basketball, cycling, soccer and hurling totalled only 51.75 hours altogether. The minor activities (those with only have two or three participants) made up most of this part of the survey. These were painting, roller-blading, table tennis, baking, drawing, hockey, football, running, walking, using the Internet, model-making, hurling, soccer, fishing, meditation and lying in bed, and only totalled 43 hours for this group.
Activities with family/friends
Activities with Family and Friends consisted of a smaller range of activities and the students spent fewer hours on these activities than Activities Alone. The hours spent watching the television, for example, consisted of 450.75 hours Alone but only 318.5 hours with Family and Friends, a difference of over 132 hours! Outdoor activities were also the commonest area of this section of the survey although the passive activities (television, computer games etc.) held the larger portion of hours. This again shows that sitting down and watching TV is more popular than going out doing something physical.
Hunting had the highest average time (10¼ hours) because there were only two participants who spent a lot of time hunting. There were nine activities with only one participant.
Activities in clubs/organisations
This was the smallest section of the survey, only 17 activities were found and the total hours totalled to only 99.85 (compared to the 886.75 hours of the Activities Alone Sector). The most popular activity in this part of the survey was a GAA match, which attracted 10 participants over 31.75 hours. Out of seventeen activities, twelve were sporting activities
In percentages the highest was Horse riding (19.42%) followed by GAA Training (17.48%) GAA Matches (8.88%) and Soccer Matches (6.66%)
Comparisons with other countries
Ireland had more activities than other countries 26, compared with Hollands 17 and Frances 7 in the Alone section
Even though Watching Television was the most popular activity in all three countries the figures were very different. The Irish spent an average of 10.24hrs watching TV Alone, the Dutch 7.6hrs and the French 7.2hrs. 84% of the Irish students watched TV Alone compared with 60% of French and only 30% of the Dutch.
The French activities were similar to ours with some exceptions like Mushroom Picking and Cooking. The Dutch have some interesting activities such as Kong Fu, Volleyball, Baseball, Watersports and Inline skating.
The activities that are common to all three surveys, under the category alone are Watching Television, Listening to Music, Reading, Cycling and Playing Computer Games. The activities that are common to all three surveys under the category Family/friends are Watching Television, Socialising, Shopping, Cycling, Walking and Card games. The most popular activity in all three results for Family/Friends was Watching TV
We all had similar indoor activities and we all spent most of our time on indoor activities. Again Ireland spent longer watching T.V with 9.95hrs on average, the Dutch spent 8.3hrs and the French 6.1hrs
The total number of hours spent on Activities Alone in the Irish survey was 886.75 hours, which averaged out at 17.05hrs and was more than either the French (14.8hrs) or the Dutch (12.37)
The major differences between the European mainland and ourselves were our large range of activities and the greater time we spent on leisure. One explanation for the huge amount of hours spent on passive activities is the Irish weather, which is usually terrible and which prevents certain activities, such as wind surfing from being carried out, resulting in most activities being carried out indoors. We all had most of the same indoor activities and we all spent most of our time on indoor activities.
